We’re all supposed to just walk around on Mars with the NY TIMES who says “The entire household died but the cops say it probably wasn’t homicide so let’s go back to his career and forget about what happened and never mind his wife or his dog, either.”
Two adults and their dog are found dead at the same time but no foul play is suspected? Then what happened - murder/suicide, carbon monoxide? How about finishing the story
I also heard it warranted further investigation...so maybe this is lag between facts and maybe not so factual statements. We'll know by this time tomorrow I'll bet. He was one of the greats. Not a Ken doll but a big presence on screen. More real than most in his art.
Thought the same thing. CO poisoning isn’t uncommon in the winter months—faulty heaters or a cracked heat exchanger in a furnace. It can feel like the flu. And I just learned last year that CO detectors only last 5-7 years, so this is a good reminder to check the date on the back of your unit.
Maybe. But I'd rather not read a bunch of strangers just assuming someone killed themselves and their dog when all they know about them is what they did for a living. It feels gross and intrusive.
I actually am not thinking CO. They were in different rooms and she had pills strewn about. I think she may have had a medical emergency, and Mr. Hackman suffered a heart attack while attempting to get help. If it was CO, the other indoor dog likely would have passed as well.
My best guess is they found a note or something indicating it was some kind of “we’re all going together” situation. That’s the only rational thing I can come up with.
Maybe they wanted to go together. He was 95 and didn’t want to leave her or the dog behind. She may have been sick with no one to care for her. They didn’t want their dog alone and uncared for. At 95, you are ready to go. Just trying to clean up your life.
I read a lot of true crime and mysteries so I'm going to throw out carbon monoxide as a plausible answer. But "foul play is not suspected" is often a bullshit cover for "we didn't see bullet holes or knives sticking out so we're stumped!"
They were probably found in their beds. And as all have said here, probably CO poisoning. But I agree, the police or the reporting should have given more info for clarity.
Oof. Poor Weird Al's parents died together in the middle of the night, suffocated by a gas leak. That seems like the most likely non-foul play reason. It would be kind of romantic if they both died naturally together while sleeping though. She was only 68 though so...?
Conjures up the whole “journalism is failing us” thing. They aren’t required to guess at the cause but should at least state that something unusual occurred and more will be forthcoming.
He was the best. The Poseidon Adventure…. A classic.
Any incomplete combustion can create CO. Just leaving the door open on a wood stove when it is full of hot coals can be fatal. Charcoal grills claim far too many lives.
That is the part that makes no sense to me either. Either it was foul play or perhaps CO2 poisoning…how else do 2 humans and a dog just die together like that??
Authorities say no foul play was involved so it sounds like it was either a murder-suicide case or something like carbon monoxide poisoning. Both possibilities are of course tragic.
Hackman was one my favorite actors. So sorry to see his life as well as his wife and dog's life end this way. Sad!
My uneducated guess is double suicide: at 95 Mr. Hackman was deteriorating beyond his comfort level and decided to end it all. Mrs. Hackman then decided she "didn't want to live without him"
Not to be rude about Gene, but I asked Sig Other if she'd ever do that for me. She goes, "Mmm... uhh yeah."😮
So you think HE shoved the (reported) pharmaceuticals down her throat then?
If you don't, then you must believe that for her it was, in fact, suicide. What other reason do you believe she could have had to commit suicide at the exact moment of Gene's passing?
There’s a difference between “not foul play” and “natural causes.” When an entire family is found dead with no signs of violence it usually ends up being something like a gas leak.
1 body, okay, that could be normal. 2 bodies is suspicious. But 3 bodies??? That should be immediately suspicious. Especially when one is a dog. Gas leak? Methane? M/S and they took the dog with them? Is there mention of a COD? Very strange and incredibly sad.
Exactly! I saw a report about another plane crash that ended with "the FAA is investigating" and my first reaction was "yeah right, not in this administration".
Just want to thank everyone suggesting carbon monoxide bc at least there is one reasonable explanation that, while tragic, at least isn’t horrific. Because my brain immediately dove into darker waters.
Thanks for saying this CJ, as my mind also immediately lurched into darkness.
It makes me sad that my response to events always assumes the worse. It’s good that there are people out there to remind me that ‘normality’ amongst the sadness may also exist (even in tragic circumstances, like this) ❤️
Unless you consider the darkness of fossil fuel companies and right-wing blowhards campaigning to keep people using gas heaters they know are unsafe, rather than shifting to electric.
How can a multi million dollar home in a gated community not have CO detectors? I am not talking about cheap-o's from a box store but installed into the infrastructure of the home.
If you have humanity if you care about us please now and not later help me and my child 10 euros is not much we need to buy food water medicine and everything. Please... I hope I can donate a little to save my family. Link in bio
A very similar scene began "Love in the Time of Cholera," by Gabriel Garcia Marquez:
'It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.'
Gold cyanide.
Before releasing it, Jeremiah de Saint-Amour lifted the loop of his dog's leash off the bed post to let the dog run away if it wanted to.
Dr. Urbino found the dog's body next to Jeremiah's.
Marquez knew how to puncture readers' hearts, then twist the knife.
I believe when asked why he didn't accept more leading man roles he replied that he had trained to be an actor, he did not train to be a leading man. He was always one of my favorites though I don't think I can say why.
Wow. Normally I see “died at 95” and just assume natural causes. I remember laughing at my mom because she asked how Queen Elizabeth died. “Well it wasn’t a motorcycle accident!” But with the death of his wife & dog, this is an interesting death for sure, and an even more tragic loss.

This is weird.
They knew something was wrong but were too far gone to escape it.
The wife had a headache, headed to the bath for aspirin; Hackman was trying to get outside; the pup retreated to a safe space.
Gas poisoning is the most plausible explanation for the dog
But, Gene was very gaunt. Perhaps it was some sort of suicide pact ...
If you hear hoofbeats, don't assume it's a zebra.
definitely a prime suspect. likely a Chihuahua. devious little bastards
I'm just imagining it would have become worse since then, so maybe he had a diagnosis that he didn't share publicly.
Or... accidental ..carbon monoxide, gas.
weird that its all of them.
He was the best. The Poseidon Adventure…. A classic.
May they rest in peace.
Hackman was one my favorite actors. So sorry to see his life as well as his wife and dog's life end this way. Sad!
Broken hearts over the death of their country?
I can easily imagine either as real possibilities.

We may never hear about the autopsy results.
Weird Al lost his parents to it.
It happens in undeveloped nations like the US.

I gotta stop posting before coffee
We should be so proud of our species.

Adults communicating like adolescents is sad.
So sad.
