I see some folks doubling down on "utterances in the open mean anyone can respond whether they are the intended audience or not," and I suppose if you really want to be that guy you can, and I also suspect you may wonder why you are blocked a lot on social media and told to go away out in the world.
Comments
1. Random person making a negative comment about a conversation I'm having with someone in public
2. Random person trying to join in the conversation in a very friendly and warm way
If you say something in public(digital or real), expect someone to say something back.
If you yell at them that football is stupid, expect to be told to fuck off.
Are you ignoring other people already in the conversation?
Are you trying to engage with the person and the post in a friendly way or just showing off?
Would your comment work better as a quote post?
Is your tone/wording challenging or supportive?
When do you think it's better to quote post? Serious question: this is something I struggle with.

„Oh, you’re having a discussion on a public street? WHAT IF I BARGE IN AND PUSH MY OPINION ON THE TOPIC ON YOU IN AGGRESSIVE AND INSULTING WAYS?!
Huh, why’s everyone suddenly treating me as if I’m a psychopath?? Unfair!“
I once had a 'friend' make a general statement on social media that applied to me (don't recall details). I objected, and he tried the defense that he was not talking about me.
If someone says "brunettes are inbred morons" they should expect flack regardless of who they were addressing.
