I’m going to regret asking this, but why is the “somewhat” in quotes, rather than the “friendly”? I feel like I’m having a stroke (or overcooking my toast).
The Prime Minister is stepping down as leader of the party and won’t be running in the next federal election. How’s he using this issue to “stay in power?”
Also, we don't have static election dates lol. As soon as Parliament is back in session, the government could lose a confidence vote, and that would trigger a federal election. The Liberals are required to call one this year, though, before October 20th.
It's so that when power transfers in the property way (for the Canadian system, different from the US), he can say Trudeau failed. He'll claim a victory and his chud supporters won't know any different.
He has to keep bleating about fentanyl because that's the excuse for the emergency power he's using. It's an illegal use, but when has illegality ever troubled the orange buffoon?
Police unions are among Trump's strongest supporters, and he's probably just taking their perception that fentanyl is practically radioactive and running with it.
That's not the Canadian election. It's the leadership convention for the Liberal Party. But Trump's betraying his ignorance of the parliamentary system anyway. We don't have fixed election dates and the election hasn't been called. Precisely ZERO people know at present when it'll be.
Yeah it's the same with the UK party leaders being PMs* rather than directly elected and having the choice of when to run an election. Either way whenever the election is called, Trudeau won't be calling the shots.
*although we have had two PMs who were not party leaders because we love 'convention'
Uh, Trudeau has resigned and therefore under Canadian law he cannot remain in office past the election of a new Parliament. The Traitor in Chief spews out this thin air horse shit and believes he is omniscient.
We do not need to read his Truth Social shit! Either the tariffs go or they stay: we need a decision in binary not a lecture! Of all the people in the world the Americans had to elect this fucking idiot as their president! #cdnpoli #USpoli
The man has no idea what is happening in Canada. Can’t even have an analyst give him a debrief on this that are 1 single google search away before he opens his mouth. Embarrassing.
Jesus Christ man Canadas parliament suck in one nature that you don’t have say a “ok elections in like 2-6 months after the PM/President/Governor general says goverment collapsed or can’t be formed”. Shocked they don’t have the election date fixed in law
Government hasn't been collapsed....it's been Prorogued, just means it doesn't meet again until after a new leader is picked. After that they could call an election or govern as usual until october. Government takes several long breaks a year that aren't much different.
Is October the end of the normal term, I do not remember if Canada has fixed terms and my brain says no because the UK et all are not fixed terms like say Japan
I say President in that for parliaments without a Governor General where there is a single figure who’s job it is to like gavel in parliament (so UK descended systems that are full republics )
I'm pretty sure he called Trudeau (he apparently wanted to ease off on tariffa and is giving auto a 30 day exemption) and not the other way around. He had Vance and Lutnock on the call too.
"Unable to tell [him] when the Canadian election is taking place"? There's no way he didn't used to understand how Canadian (and British) elections work. This has such a feel of Trump struggling with someone he once understood.
whether he understands or not is actually irrelevant!
i bet most americans think other countries' elections are run just like ours, and i'm certain his supporters don't care in any case: the point of that is to rile up some anti-trudeau sentiment in his base so they pat HIS ass about it some more
Most Americans don't, and obviously it doesn't matter to his supporters. But 25 years ago, Trump probably did know. (It's the kind of thing you need to know if you're buying influence.) This feels like an example of mental decline.
I was wondering this as well. Like, I couldn't tell you when the next Irish election is. We just had one, and I expect another within the next 5 years, but couldn't give you a date. That's how parliamentary systems work. How they've always worked.
I think you're on to something there. This administration seems to have maybe three or four things it accuses other leaders of doing and they keep reusing them even when it doesn't make sense.
Lol yeah. Trump never seems to accuse Putin or Xi Jinping of trying to stay in power forever.
Though I suppose the US collectively places a level of importance on elections happening at regular intervals that isn't common elsewhere. Other US commentators seem to get stuck on it too.
You don't need to know how to a system works to know it's different from the US and doesn't have fixed election dates. And if your business model depends on buying influence, you need to be aware of this. Not the intricacies, just enough for when Allen Weisselberg says you need to sign this invoice
Trump in the 80s was no genius, but he wasn't stupid. When you make your living buying influence, you need at least a general understanding of what's going on.
I'd guess that a fairly high percentage of even the *smart* American real-estate developers would have no idea about parliamentary elections, and all the evidence suggests Trump has always been truly stupid
He's mostly paid (or promised to) other people to do the understanding for him before, and his increasing demands have selected for less and less capable yes-men.
Glad it was Justin Trudeau "of Canada". It could have been a Four Seasons Total Landscaping triumph had it been Justin Trudeau "of England" or some other place. But seriously, could he have written a tweet that was any more dick-ish?
Canadá really should start negotiations with blue states to become part of Canada. Start with the west coast states. The U.S. economy relies on blue state money.
"He's trying to use this issue to stay in power" is impressive since he's resigned as PM, Parliament is prorogued, and he therefore must cede the writ of election to the next party leader.
So unless tariffs are also a time machine I think Trump is just lying again 🤔🤔
Jfc, he's so fking stupid! Can someone explain to the dumbass how each party picks a leader then an election date is declared. Then they debate. We go vote. Fk!!!!
Trump doesn't understand that Commonwealth Nations have a Governor-General, who can, in some circumstances, dismiss the government and new elections held. As can King Charles III.
Trump would already be out on his arse and new elections called in a Commonwealth country.
Stats from US customs and border patrol showing a steep decline in fentanyl crossing the northern border is not good enough? What this guy gets away with is absurd.
So much of their response is based on accumulated Trudeau hostility that's been building for years on the right wing sphere (see: convoy), they're not going to have anything when Liberal leadership changes. Can you imagine trying to pull this with Carney, the personification of Blandly Effective?
If MAGA punks want to have their wives/significant others feen over a controlling dictator, then they should move to Russia. Real men aren't falling for Trump's emasculating bs.
Comments
It's done.
Next, Canadians want a strong response to Trump and won't accept much less. Our leaders know this.
We're done.
And Mango Messiah hasn't the first fucking clue how parliamentary systems work.
In a normal Administration there would be people getting him that kind of info. Also that our elections aren’t the same date every 4 years.
Note it's a phone call cause he'd get beaten down meeting in person with Pardo or Trudeau.
"Migrant caravans" aren't one of those categories so Trump faked up the "fentanyl smuggling" emergency as an excuse.
*although we have had two PMs who were not party leaders because we love 'convention'
surprise surprise.
he doesn't know how elections work in his own country.
It's hilarious and terrifying how stupid Trump's followers are.
Is he trying to fix Poilievre's cratering in the polls or something?

Make tariffs that are roughly proportional to the amount of fentanyl that goes from the US to Canada
(why do I know everything about how your country works but your President doesn't bother to look up parliamentary democracy on wikipedia)
i bet most americans think other countries' elections are run just like ours, and i'm certain his supporters don't care in any case: the point of that is to rile up some anti-trudeau sentiment in his base so they pat HIS ass about it some more

he has to keep it up or he'll look stupid.
oh never mind
Trump would already be out on his arse and new elections called in a Commonwealth country.
Americans. Education? Nah
