Sylvester Stallone played John Rambo in the movies. Viet Nam vet Green Beret dealing with PTSD. However, when Stallones number came up he dodged the draft and ran to Switzerland to teach girls to play soccer. How Star Spangled.

Clearly people are upset that I am mocking stallone for being a chicken hawk war monger. He's all against a war but lets send your kids to Greenland, Canada and Panama. 🙄
Yeah, usually as they were opposed to the immoral war , not because they were cowards. And not forgetting the macho muscleman hero was busted by Australia Customs for smuggling growth hormones .
Why is she weird … because she stepped outside of the so called norm?
Or because she’s a strong woman knowing what the truth is & a democrat.
Women everywhere should follow her example & call out against abusive men!
They’re all a bunch of star spangled assholes more salty and washed up than the Dead Sea. I wouldn’t be surprise they all take part in a Diddy circle jerk during the inauguration.
I think the reason we have a volunteer army is because of the long term harm it did having a lot of people who didn't want to be there in it. Also the uselessness and purposelessness of that war.
True. Vietnam was a thoroughly unpopular war, especially for the people forced to fight it. Studies by the DOD showed that a draft military was counterproductive, thus was born the volunteer force, a better idea all around.
This is untrue in 1969, he received a deferment as a college student and was also diagnosed with partial facial paralysis, which exempted him from service.
In 1991, Stallone won a suit against a British magazine that accussed him of draft evasion. The publication had to apologize and pay damages.
There's another side here. Vietnam was an unjust war! The poor, politically unconnected were drafted and fought. Many came home drug dependent and mentally damaged. Our agent orange destroyed the land. We stacked up "enemy" bodies for the cameras. Then we helicoptered out as losers at the end.
Yeah, the 5 guys who went in Trump's place came home damaged, IF they came home at all !!! But hey, dodging veneral disease was his Vietnam, according to him.
Not the 1940s but almost: “On 29 June 1950, the United States defeated England 1–0 in a World Cup group match at Estádio Independência in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil.”
Sylvester Stallone did avoid the Vietnam War draft. During the period from 1965 to 1967, he taught girls’ physical education at an American school in Switzerland. This move was part of his strategy to avoid being drafted, as teaching abroad was a way to defer the draft.
I can't say I was a "fan" but I did watch a few movies here and there. Won't be doing that again. Gibson and John what's his name have been irrelevant for decades so their existence is their punishment.
Stallone isn't responsible for the horrors that US conscripts faced in Vietnam, the US government is, and by blaming people that resisted the draft in ways available to them instead of the politicians that issued the draft you're promoting divide-and-conquer military propaganda.
If you want to criticise him for glorifying war, I have no issue with that. My issue was that the initial comment seemed to view avoiding the war as a bad thing.
That's your opinion. I guess we don't agree. Rambo is described as a 1 man war. His big speech is about how HE didn't start it. I didn't say it wasn't a good movie.
First Blood didn’t glorify anything. It tried to bring attention to the shameful treatment of returning Vietnam Veterans.
Have you even seen the movie??? 🙄
Yes I have. Have you?
"...he is forced to flee into the mountains and wage an escalating one-man WAR against his pursuers." Quote from review of First Blood. The still is from Rambo II.
I’m pretty sure I missed your point.
I stand by mine that First Blood was more about how we as a society turned our backs on Vietnam vets and the PTSD that they dealt with. It wasn’t about “WAR”(despite your all caps).
I think if that's what you got out of, great, but ponder this. If the marketing slogan was: "Society treated our returning soldiers terrible!", who would have gone to see it?
Stallone, the big faux tough guy. Shameful. People really do reveal themselves. Wake up, America! The grotesquely wealthy are eating your lunch, not the hard-working immigrants.
And of course Stallone is MAGA. The draft dodgers club. I personally will not watch any of his movies ever again or anything else that he makes. He hasn't made anything good lately anyways.
It is exactly that. They're terrified of getting hurt. Trump is a coward. He can definitely do his inauguration outside. It's been done outside in the cold before. And rain and snow. He could've definitely enlisted at least and gone to the war. But he was terrified. So Trump got the "doctors note".
Lol God forbid if they have to go fight in a war somewhere in the world. Then of course Trump went running to daddy and got his doctors note for his foot problems. Really?? How the hell can anybody in the army even respect a president who has dodged a draft using for problems. Trump is a coward.
Ahh...hold on...correction:
They love the IDEA of military, just not Our own military, just the one that they don't serve in,and hope to replace the current one with
Yeah, I'm not going too hold my breath waiting for this trio to Make Hollywood Great again, because it certainly seems they're already doing just fine on their own.
If you had put this info " Stallone did not dodge the draft. He had physical issues and was exempted as 4-F. He actually tried to enlist." I would not have felt the need to ask your position at all . I might ask how you knew that info, but I would not have assumed you supported all draft dodgers.
He was in college in Switzerland 1965-1967. When did they drag kids out of college to serve in the army? He returned to the USA just before his 21st birthday https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvester_Stallone
Wait, did you seriously watch First Blood and your take away was that fighting in that war was a good thing? Like if there was ever a movie in favour of dodging the draft, it's First Blood.
Been watching Stallone for a long time know his story pretty well but never heard he went and taught soccer. He was in the movie about a soccer team escaping.
Maybe so but your post is a lie, misinformation. His face is partially paralyzed at birth. Thus he isn't a draft dodger. Him joining Trump makes him, in my eyes, a horrible person but not a draft dodger.
Sigh, people. Let's not be as bad at spreading disinformation as the MAGAs.
1) Stallone was eligible for the draft in 1969 while he was a student.
2) He was removed from the draft due to partial paralysis in his face.
"“Mr. Stallone never sought to evade his call-up,” said his lawyer, Michael Skrein. Skrein...
A lawyer for the magazine and the writer said her clients “unreservedly withdraw the suggestion to which my friend has referred and apologize to the plaintiff.”
1960's kids watching 80's macho man movies. I hope these newspapers remember how anti-Russian/Communist the 80's were. But then the GOP always did have selective memories.
No fan of Stallone or any of the other two, but are you sure this is accurate? I heard that he was disqualified from service due to medical condition, and there’s no evidence to suggest he intentionally dodged the draft.
Looks at things that I have read and been told in the past he moved over seas and failed to report. Its the second Rambo movie that is egregious. Whatever floats your boat.
It’s like a Freaky Friday moment. During the Vietnam Draft Bruce Springsteen pretended to be crazy and Donald Trump pretended to have bone spurs to dodge service. Today Springsteen has bone spurs and Trump is crazy.
I am probably the only person that never liked Stallone. Rocky was good but I never liked that man. Not cultural either. I grew up in MA with a lot of Italians. Been there actually. Don’t like him and now I know why. Vindication
A) it's called acting, and believe it or not what you see in movies isn't always happening and B) invading Vietnam to fight Vietcong and slaughter women and children because their chosen form of government and economic models did not align with our global capitalist imperialism, is not patriotism.
It never ceases to amaze me that people who get rich from their fans turn their backs on them and worship the billionaire cult who only work for themselves and are in fact parasites sucking the blood of the People.
Nothing brave or valiant about the war in Vietnam. Not to say I’m pro Stallone in his politics but draft dodging fighting in the war on Vietnam was the ethical decision, not the cowardly one.
I never saw the appeal of that clown. He's a shit actor and is barely comprehensible even when he's not drunk off his ass. The Rocky and Rambo franchises are some of the worst movies ever made.
Also, you gotta recall that as soon as Stallone took over the Rambo films, subtext went out the window and he just started shooting everything that moved.
Lee Marvin (known for playing “tough guys” in movies like The Dirty Dozen) served in the Marines during WWII and was injured in the Battle of Saipan. He was also a lifelong Democrat, JFK supporter, and early supporter of LGBTQ rights.
Not that I know of, but my dad probably has. He loves watching older action movies and has probably seen a few of Lee Marvin’s movies. I know he’s familiar with Lee’s military background, too. (I mean, a Marine recognizes a fellow Marine.)
in this one, marvin was a hobo (A#1), a very young keith carradine was a young hobo trying to learn the rails, and ernest borgnine was "The Shack" the brutal conductor. "The Shack would rather kill a man than give him a free ride!"
You gotta realize that Donald Trump is so unloved. That all you did was stop people from watching all your shows and movies. They want nothing to do with you.
Or, alternatively, dodge for comfort and act for glory. Amazing how some folks skip the war but still get to play the hero—without a single mosquito bite.
I read somewhere that Johnson's only reason for pursuing Vietnam was that they supposedly had oil reserves off the coast. The presence of oil has recently been validated, but I'm not sure whether LBJ had any hard evidence of this at the time. We certainly weren't there to "fight Communism."
Some people didn’t believe in the war. Some still don’t, including some who served in the war. Many didn’t want to be drafted, not sure if they felt honor in the lack of choice. Maybe you fought in Vietnam, fully supported the operation, and deserve an opinion on it; maybe not..
There are legit reasons to critique ole Marion, but he had multiple concerns regarding enlistment: Age and his physical condition. He was born in 1907. I’m 33 and couldn’t ever enlist due to my own physical limitations, and I wasn’t injured playing college football like him.
He also stared in a porno at that time titled “the Italian Stallion” which is where the moniker came from! Sure beats dyin in jungle with the suckers I guess! Total draft dodging phony just like his new daddy!
Oh totally! Truth be told though I think Melania knows exactly who she is despite being thrust into the world of international politics. She’s a pro who hooked a big fish but then had to sign a lot of paperwork to keep him! Now she’s just waiting for that glorious day when Mar-a Laggo becomes hers🤣
Not a real issue for me…+ think leaving the country was more brave than paying off a doctor to write up a fake diagnosis. (For most of the war all you needed to do to avoid the drat was enroll in college.)
This is Trump nominating those who emulate him best - like the denying rapist and various grifters, all of them are hypocrites and liars. This is the new America. Or is it the old America reborn?
“You’re a disgrace for resisting being forced by your government to murder innocent people and then die invading a poor country 8000 miles away so rich governors can get more land and money”
I hated the Viet Nam war and protested against it. I was lucky to escape it, and I have no beef with anyone else who did the same. My problem is with people who escaped the draft back then, but are now trying to look tough, with somebody else's kids.
Small correction: he registered for the draft, but wasn't called. Even if he was, his facial paralysis and slurred speech would have likely made him ineligible. Stallone may have sold his soul to Trump, but he's not a draft dodger.
You must be young.
I have no idea about Switzerland, I don't remember beyond when he was homeless in the 70's, but Stallone made Rambo to shine a light on vets and the lack of respect for them.
And back then most guys were trying to dodge a draft to a war they didn't believe in.
Again, not the point. Also, he shat on the original with the next four movies or five. Chicken hawks that are for wars and conflict but when their number was up took no part in it.
He's not "for wars and conflict" though, is he? He's an actor. And even the role he played as Rambo was a commentary on how badly soldiers were treated. Have you even watched it bro?
Privileged people were trying to dodge the draft. My father volunteered even though he qualified for deferral bc he was tired of watching all the friends who couldn’t afford college being sent to die.
Hey!
….. that’s so fucking weird, the only people who actually “play soccer” are Americans, the rest of the world plays rugby… that’s just some starling info.

Because war doesn't kill celebrities.

Most Stallone sequels miss the point of their original movies.

He dodged the draft and wants to start a dozen new wars, you see the hypocrisy?

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt this once. No more snide ass-ery.
Web searching reliable sources works wonders. 😀

Nana told me about her getting in Stallone’s face with a can of Lysol to extinguish his cigar during an ADR session.
After you hear 1st hand gossip about an ahole smoker ~ it changes everything.
Also, isn't the first Rambo about how war is bad and traumatic and the second about how it's bad and caused by short-sighted colonists?
They can only ACT patriotic, wrapping themselves in the flag on a stage set.

Dude definitely believes he's Rambo AND rocky irl
God youre a major dipshit

I never really liked him anyways and as a veteran, I like him less now.

Are you cross with Anthony Hopkins for not eating people?
Might be an unpopular opinion but good for him for dodging the draft. Not fighting an unjust war is good actually.
