What do you think about what @lxeagle17.bsky.social is saying re: this is the better approach? Let Republicans take complete ownership of everything and let them just fail on their own?
That approach will make me monomaniacal about getting these folks out of office. It's smart not to grind the gears over every petty thing, but this is no petty thing. This is the whole ballgame.
He's afraid that after two weeks of government shutdown the votes will materialize to take his filibuster away and find the government themselves and nobody now insisting he do this will thank him for it. Especially when the SAVE act becomes law.
Schumer sucks but his position really really sucks here. And I tend to think we need to do it whatever the consequences. I just know most of the Do Something crowd will respond by attacking him or just collapsing into a hole to die in when the filibuster goes boom because of it.
@schumer.senate.gov Dems need to draw a very clear line and stick to it. The number one priority has to be stopping the lawlessness and chaos that this administration throws out every day. Nothing should happen until that ends.
We're in a time where the old rules don't apply anymore. The only thing we should be concerned with is doing something - anything. And if it doesn't work, we try something else, and something else, and so on. What we *can't* afford to do is stand in place worrying about what others will do.
I agree Dems need some better messaging here. But I’m not sure Schumer is in the right House of Congress to apply this leverage. The Senate should be able to pass a funding bill without Dems. So here’s hoping Jeffries can keep his Gottheimers in line - I’m not confident, but I’m optimistic.
@schumer.senate.gov this is pathetic. You are weak and we are getting steamrolled here. Come on dude. If you aren’t up for the fight then hand it over to someone else.
Please no. My husband and I were just sitting at dinner saying “what new slogan do you think Schumer is going to come up with in lieu of doing anything meaningful to combat the worst constitutional crisis in our lifetime?” And now this!
The WH is attempting to DARVO a government shutdown. Seems like Schumer and Jeffries are trying to control that narrative. The WH wants the public to believe the shutdown is something the Democrats are doing but "It’s literally Republicans who are doing it..."
@schumer.senate.gov @warren.senate.gov The answer is “no” until it all stops. No nuance. Nothing to consider. Nothing to figure out. What is wrong? The entire system is at stake.
On the other hand, if the government shuts down, the criminals will just continue their crime spree while the government is shut down for an extended period, forcing most federal employees to quit.
He appeared to be conditioning this on ‘bipartisan’ moves from Republicans to meet Democrats part way. But the idea that this would happen is completely delusional. The sooner Schumer figures that out, the sooner he’ll stop looking like a clown who brought a paper clip to a gun fight.
I feel half-nuts writing this, but Schumer appears to have whatever Biden had—maybe some combination of senility, denial, and mental agitas introduced by long COVID (?).
It's increasingly debilitating and disastrous; he's all but destroying the party. It's reaching flashing red light status.
If, as the article suggests, "Republicans are coming to Democrats begging for help in bring their own extremists to heel.", then Ds should let the madness play out until the situation becomes so bad, that it gives them strong bargaining power.
There aren't sufficient Rs willing to take a stand yet.
I read your piece. Excellent as usual. Top Dems are in denial of the situation they are in. I’m not blaming them, they spent years raising money, trying their best to help people on the margins. This world is foreign to them and they don’t know what to do. We need leaders who do, immediately.
These old fucks are getting paid too they dont care. We need a purge of 45+ members of congress. Short of Bernie (and last I knew Katie Porter? Not sure how old she is) they can all go
I have voted for Democrats since 2000 with a few rare exceptions. I've written to my reps to tell them that I will vote against them, even though I might like them, if they don't 100% hold the line. I've already seen enough from Jeffries and Schumer - they aren't up to this and need to go.
The best case scenario is Schumer is setting up the lawless Trump regime for Democrats making budget/rule of law demands they can’t accept. This would justify Schumer saying “I tried” and then refusing to cut a deal.
All the more reason to keep a short leash on your Dem reps/senator (called mine) and make sure they understand where they need to make a stand (pretty sure mine isn't the Schumer caucus anyhow).
Yes, both Schumer and Jeffries have now said they're going to vote for the Trump budget whatever it contains. 🤷♀️ They're going to ask for some change, not get it, and then vote yes.
@schumer.senate.gov oh HELL NO!! Don’t you DARE! This is your ONLY and LAST chance to save the country from tyranny. Democracy is falling. This spending bill is the only tool you have left, do NOT SQUANDER IT! Shut down the fucking government!!
Even more than the DOGE stuff they need to make the red line for their support a binding statement from Trump that he does not have the legal authority to impound appropriated money. What is the point of negotiating a budget with someone who claims the power to ignore it? Easier public sell too.
Not sure how enforceable a binding statement from Trump would be on any topic, anytime, anywhere but in concept the idea sounds great. Trump's gonna do what Trump's gonna do and let the arguments against his actions end up in courts for at least the next generation.
The only acceptable position: Trump & Musk have shown a willingness to flagarantly break the law. Unlike Republicans in Congress, we will not be complicit. Republicans control both chambers of Congress. They should look to themselves to find the votes.
This is a minority view, but i don't blame Schumer. He listens to his caucus. A big chunk of Senate Dems don't have the stomach for a fight. They think they'll be blamed for a shutdown, so they're looking for a way out.
The Debt Limit fight always skews towards a PR battle, which Party Repub or Dem is blamed. Without the Debt Limit being raised by Congress, many parts of the Govt shut down. Nine out of 10 times, Repubs are blamed. But maybe not this time, as Trumps PR machine could pin it on the Dems. #DebtLimit
They think they’re still in the 80s. This is not business as usual. Dems need to wake the fuck up and stop telling us that we need to be the ones to fight. It starts with them.
The question is, what should a normal citizen do, given the fecklessness that seems to be showing from Schumer and the rest? Calling their offices? Insisting?
I definitely don't want them to shut down the govt. I want them to make ending the crime spree a condition for any budget deal for their votes. I'm not saying they shld keep it ambiguous. I'm saying there's an argument for it. Not one I agree w but there's an argument.
Seconding this point. Until you can clearly state what sort of binding agreement would actually be binding and effective, demanding it is just another form of weakness
OK, Congressional Dems see the trap Republicans are setting to blame Dems for a government shutdown, when Republicans can't agree on a plan.
But Dems haven't figured out how to message this well and it just sounds like they aren't going to play hardball to get Republicans to defend the rule of law.

It is not the Democrats responsibility to vote for a budget they don't agree with.

This is no time to bend over for the Republicans or the orange felon.

Because norms and decorum.
They have one bullet in the gun—which they’ll carefully lock back in its case and place upon the top shelf in the closet.
NO DEAL.
"Republicans in disarray", must be.
Republicans have enough votes to pass any budget they want.
R leaders don't ask for D help anytime else, we shouldn't give it now free.
End the lawlessness, we'll help shiv your own members.

He is evidently not up to fighting for the democrats, or his constituents. Surely he’s not planning on running again?
Is Purge consider CRIME now!
Isn’t well liked by whom?
I thought this seemed a lot simpler a few days ago and I was under the impression you wanted the Dems to shut it down.
So if I understand, they need to remain ambiguous, till a critical moment. Telling when that moment is will be the trick.
It's complicated stuff.
But Dems haven't figured out how to message this well and it just sounds like they aren't going to play hardball to get Republicans to defend the rule of law.
