Second the Lambertville comment. Hoagie Haven is a good place for food, the libraries are great, and there’s lots of little shops and stuff around Palmer Square. Check out the institution woods for a nice hike too. Def my fav spot.
IDK if Princeton has any, but the Ashcan School was a pretty neat American art movement. The style is somewhat Impressionist but subject matter is mostly street scenes and working people. Many had worked as editorial journalists prior to painting. I think you would find them interesting.
I was there once and did all the things mentioned - record store, bookstore, ice cream....But also went to Yankee Doodle Tap Room which is oldest bar in Princeton and watched a professor and student rekindling their relationship at the start of a new term. Bar is ok, can't promise shenanigans tho.
I’ll keep going! Small World, Rojo’s or Sakrid for coffee…Ooika for matcha…that weird mystery book store that is never open down by Whole Earth Center…head to Lawrence Twp. and be knocked out by The Gingered Peach…
Stop off at Labyrinth Books (they close at 6) and talk to the manager/owners about your books. They may be willing to host an event for the kid's book.
Also, check with the Princeton Public Library as well. They host a lot of events and I know they have your book. It's about 2 blocks from Labyrinth and the edge pf Princeton University.
Is your talk open to the public, or is it just for students and faculty?
You can do plenty of things including finding parking near the record store, walking to the record store, leaving the record store, getting coffee or sushi near the record store, and visiting the cool cemetery near the record store. Also they have DVDs.
Ice Cream at Bent Spoon
The cemetery is super historic and you can get coffee across the street
There are lots of fun little shoppes in Palmer Square
Uh…all the other stuff I know is church stuff
Second anyone who suggests Small World Coffee, my friend has run the Witherspoon St location for almost 20 years. They take great care of their employees!
I don’t remember it catering to students back when I was there… but sure, it must be lovely! I did get to see Bob Dylan at the gym though. Laberynth Books I’d add to my list.

itsa short hop
The Triangle Club's original musical is great every year but that's like one weekend in November.
There's a movie theater from the 1920s. I like going to old theaters that random important people have absolutely sat in to watch dumb stuff.
Not sure if Princeton's art museum is done being renovated yet but that would be another option.
