We’ve had a number of near misses (a number of runway incursions, the near miss of a FedEx cargo jet with a Southwest 737) and a shortage of Air Traffic controllers for a while.

An expert explained that planes fly at a higher altitude than helocopters. Planes usually don't look left to right when getting ready to land. Helicopters tend to follow the ground and not look up.
What is interesting is that airplanes have equipment that notifies the pilot if something comes near.

When ATC asks the helicopter pilot can he see the plane, maybe he thinks his attention is being drawn to the one taking off.

"regional jet" is a size class, generally between 30 and 80 passengers. They can have pretty substantial range, but can take off and land on relatively short runways for smaller airports.
