Many annoying things about this post from @mattyglesias.bsky.social, but to confine myself to one: "climate change will not wipe out humanity" is not a sufficient take on climate damages. Nothing of particular substance follows from that. It doesn't settle any argument.

Let us fuck off for now, we'll use the money for good later, honest.

But if international trade is climate-impacted, then all hell will break loose.
Is it going to be a winner for candidate Buttigieg to promise to bail out all the closed coal mines?
we should aim for 2.5-3.0K warming and work hard to make people less vulnerable to climate change
we should aim for a carbon price
He thinks he is clever, but he is a waste of time and energy.
🙃 🤬
(that's the covid strategy ain't it? asking for a friend)

truly amazing insight from a great thinker
"Of course it’s not a sufficient take on climate damages nor do I say in the piece that it’s a sufficient take on climate damages.
What I do say is that *it isn’t true* and that therefore it’s bad when the president of the United States says it."
which makes total sense.
Not bringing his energy here.
What he really needs to do is to actually engage with the scale of the consequences of climate change! You could ask him what temperature target he would choose!
Massive loss of life, loss of livelihoods, forced migrations and displacements, crop failures, famines, and whatnot are easier to bear when they're Someone Else's Immediate Problem.
Christman was dead-on when he said that this leads to masses knocking on the door of prosperous nations, with locking them out constituting genocide, and millions inside declaring "In that case, I choose genocide."
I've spent most of the intervening years working on the problem. And now I'm 52 and my father is safely dead and, well, you know the rest...
1. Geopolitical destabilization leading to world war
2. Pandemic due to permafrost pathogen release
3. CO2 levels >1000ppm, where it affects human cognition
4. Ocean acidification kills all plankton, reducing atmospheric oxygen below level humans need
Look at us checking facts together and being all civil and curious and nice though!
I thought about that when writing the opening paragraphs to this recently:

(Seriously though, good article 🙂)
Yeah, he could use this line on pretty much anything and not be wrong. It's lazy.
Matt is off bsky, labeled a troll.
Gone, message rcvd.
Let'd get back to our knitting, girls
It is the great reveal of antipathy towards the real suffering of others.
I'd argue that if we let people die from climate apocalypse humanity does not survive.
*Stupid != unable to think. Stupid == unwilling to think.
If you’re asking voters in Ohio to give up hamburgers to save strangers in the Maldives, they are going to reject your idea
Translation: countless will die and those that survive will suffer in a chaotic post apocalyptic world.
Climate chaos is more accurate
