Once the "influencers" hit threads it became an engagement dystopia. I'm seeing a lot of the twitter trash invading Bluesky. Bluesky doesn't have the moderation to stop it. I think modern social media is way past its half life.
There a lot of smart people posting on this, can someone please tell us how? Cause I honestly can’t think of how Bluesky can really grow the infrastructure without 💰💰💰💰💰💰
We have to make sure it breaks even, but ONLY breaks even - sufficient for growth, robust content moderation and recoding to adopt features that users want. I would prefer no advertising, and would be happy to pay a user fee to avoid that.
The problem is that once the active user base is large enough, some billionaire will say to himself, "Gee, that's a whole lot of plebs on Bluesky being all excited about their freedom of expression not being manipulated and monetized... Maybe I should buy and ruin it just for shits and giggles.
*sorting through his mental catalog of truly world-class diarrhea anecdotes* I have been training for this my whole life, don't worry sir I won't disappoint you
I’m all for ads if it keeps BlueSky blue Checkmark free and they are highlighted correctly. I just want a verification system set up, like yellow for journalist, blue for celebrities, red for Sith.
Some upstanding news outlet will surely find a way to incite rage in people who've never heard of Bluesky, and pressure the owners to change policies and "restructure" so that we'll want to leave before monetization even comes to fruition.
It isn't - it's all being run on Venture Capital I think. Once they get enough critical mass they might start asking for donations, like wikipedia - which fair enough has about 400 million in cash reserves just now so it is a viable possibility.
It's a public good company, not a for-profit. A subscription model would be perfectly fine, Especially one that doesn't constrain the experience of free users.
If we want to keep the lights on, on our own, we have to foot the bill.
gosh I hope they come up with some kind of crowdfunding campaign every now and then so that we don't have to suffer repulsive oligarchs littering the platform with oceans of ads and dystopian algorithms, I would contribute so eagerly to keep bluesky free of them
On the contrary: the way to make sure this place isn't bought and ruined by some shitty billionaire is to make sure it never ends up for sale in the first place, which means that it has to be financially self-sustaining.

It's possible, zillionaires don't have to devour everything!
*checks notes*
turn it into NBC.
What does Leon cost ?
Though it's a worthy thing to donate towards, don't get me wrong.
OMG those people are crazy. Sonya is pretty great.
wish you would’ve got away with it hal
We need to be more specific about what 'never makes any money' means in practice.
Code improvements and hosting need to be sustainably funded or it won't exist.
The key is it needs to be an ecosystem, not a product or brand.
I just realized there are no ads 😮
