Reading takes time, effort and energy on my part, all of which can be optimized by someone telling me a riveting story.

Probably. But reading a book in public is a great way to get some space and a relatively decent "do not disturb" sign (from my experience at least)
So it's worth picking up that book anyway (and you might inspire a non reader to read)
I bought a trilogy I read as a kid, to read this winter. Snopes by William Faulkner,
Each of the Snopes patriarchs reminds me of some of the people I knew Growing up in Lafayette County Missouri.
Information, is that usually found in a manual or a technical book, whereas reading a book for pleasure to immerse oneself in a place for an hour a month or even a year is so much more fun.
If reading a book is embarrassing then actually knowing the information is worse still.
People should refuse to learn anything and be suspicious toward those who know things.
Violent and even murderous to "experts".
And annihilate any group of "scholars".
I often felt that in college. I’d leaf through the text and say to myself, Wow, I don’t know any of this “, then panic. Fortunately I never dropped the class, just suffered for the first week or two.
There are certain books/authors that I feel I should have read already. That it looks like virtue signaling that I’m reading them at my age. But there are so so many books these days…
It occurs to me the goal of AI is:
a)Produce millions of new 'books'.
b)Summarize them in a paragraph so no one has to read them.
c)Get people to pay for 'writing' the books, and then, pay to have them 'read' and summarized by the same machine.

who am I to write words to people who can just read reality?
* If that's not bad enough, I once knew a guy who read books "written" by women.
