Holy cow, thanks for the replies! I was just trying to figure out which game I should play next. I guess I should put more time into Goldeneye 007. I am in a N64 mood since I have been playing Majora’s Mask
GoldenEye is the correct answer if we still lived in the 90s, as it was easily my most played game then. But its performance issues are so big that it's borderline unplayable in 2024. If they released a recompiled version that didn't run at 8FPS all the time, I'd buy it!
Oh damn, thought you included 007 as the no-go games.
Yeah, it's easily the best.
Honestly spent 500+ hours playing this with my 3 best mates at school lunchtimes, I lived 3 mins walk from school, so we'd get a good 45 mins gameplay.
What Road Rash 64 achieved was great combat while bike racing… in many of the other RR games it was near impossible to hit other players or stay engaged for more than one strike.
I have fond memories of playing with my brother, bil, and best friend for like a week straight and everyone having a blast. It was pure chaos. My sister was so mad that we spent so much time playing it.
I brought Harvest Moon 64 over to a friend's house when I was a kid for a sleepover. He made fun of the game while watching me play it. We went to bed and then I woke up at 4:00 in the morning to discover he had been playing all night. 🤣
Pokemon stadium 1 and 2. Both gave us the opportunity to see our favorite pokemon in 3D, the mini games were addicting, and that announcer was iconic! It's a shame that the version on switch has no way to use your own pokemon
One of the most critical moments in any 90’s kid’s life was discovering that the game wasn’t a straight line. If you hit the right targets on Corneria, many new paths emerged. Though it first appeared so, your journey wasn’t predetermined.
Some of my favorites from my childhood collection:
Star Wars: Episode I Racer, Rogue Squadron and Shadows of the Empire
Jet Force Gemini
Goldeneye
Harvest Moon 64
Body Harvest
Clayfighter 63 1/3
Vigilante 8
I loved Body Harvest, even though it could be clunky at times. Jet Force Gemini is also a solid contender. But it's gotta be Conker's Bad Fur Day for me, no question.
I LOVED the rat level where you played as the king rat gangster who rallied a rat army and pooped explosive turd mines. So many memories from that game for me.
I liked playing Hey You, Pikachu! as a kid. Probably not the best N64 game out there, but it was so different from anything else I remember at the time.
I'm happy to see some love for Starfox and Perfect Dark here, but you know which N64 game gets way too little love, imo?
Extreme-G 2. Perfect blend of wild F-Zero like speed, Mario Kart type mayhem in how you can assault fellow racers, a battle mode where you pilot tanks.... it's a dope game.
Plus a really sick DnB focused soundtrack, with solid sound design. You can reach speeds with good enough piloting of your hyper bikes that you break the sound barrier, and it sounds and feels SO good when you do. It mutes the music and environmental sounds until you get back below the threshold. 🔥👌
Really liked vehicle-based games as a kid...
Star Wars (Racer, Rogue squadron, Battle for Naboo)
Diddy Kong Racing
Vigilate 8 1 and 2
Ridge Racer 64
Bomberman 64
Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2
Iggy's Reckin' Balls
Starfox 64
Blast Corps
Glover
So I don’t necessarily think it’s the GOAT, but a sleeper game from my childhood was Sarge’s Heroes 2. Something about playing as plastic army men and the level design that it brings just tickles my brain.
I had this as a little kid. I couldn’t figure out anything in the game for the life of me, and it wasn’t for lack of trying. Pissed me off so much back then haha
Yes, yes, and yes! Same team that would later make the Sly Cooper games with the same game engine! I cam back here just to see if anyone had suggested Rocket because it totally slipped my mind even though I've actively been replaying it, great game, great music, great physics, bad camera
Same, I got into the PSX/PS2 as an adult, to go back and experience some of the things I had missed, and it's well worth it, don't get me wrong, modern Indie games are the GOAT, but some of that stuff is great to revisit
Any other first party or Rare game and you’re pretty safe. I think the question should be what non first or second party game . Is the best for the system

Fun fact, Nintendo didn’t want the multiplayer function but the devs shipped it anyway (!)
Yeah, it's easily the best.
Honestly spent 500+ hours playing this with my 3 best mates at school lunchtimes, I lived 3 mins walk from school, so we'd get a good 45 mins gameplay.
Body Harvest was also awesome.
e.g. Banjo Tooie/Kazooie, DK 64, 007 Goldeneye, Conker's Bad Fur Day.
(Me and my brother had a blast playing that game during the summer)
Wonderful
I played a SICK amount of that game

Jet Force Gemini
Goldeneye
Harvest Moon 64
Body Harvest
Clayfighter 63 1/3

Legit got vertigo climbing up to that lighthouse on the pirate island.
I still have my cartridge but my N64 got stolen nearly 20 years ago.
I shouldn't have forgotten it

Rare was making bangers.
"But I need gold gems!"
Can’t pick just one.
No Mercy, Revenge, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Rogue Squadron…..
Played a bit of HERO too.
So...yes! All of the above!
