#1 My youth...my hair...my skinny jeans, oh and democracy, political intelligence, civility. Sorry. I think I exceeded my limit, but can I also get my motorbike back. It's a really, really bad idea, I know, but I did love to ride.
Of course, but I meant the HQ and the location of the key assemblies. It really should meet in a safe neutral country. The US no longer meets those requirements.
I graduated high school in 1986. I had no idea how many of my classmates would grow up to be Russian bots and/or Nazis. What happened to our generation? How were so many radicalized for the evil?
Reagan definitely. His administration decided that the people who became infected with AIDS deserved it, and so they allowed the virus to spread. It was democide.
They were just fundamentally trash. Reagan began my push to the left. Full on fucking anarchist now. Anyone who saw his bullshit, and the bullshit of the subsequent GOP and the useless neoliberals on the Dem side and has not gone left is just immoral fucking trash.
89 and the same! In our classrooms on the rolling tvs, we saw films of starving and emaciated Jews in the camps. We had survivors come to our classrooms. We learned in depth about the atrocities committed. I'll never comprehend those of our generation who have gleefully leapt into the pits of hate.
1984 here. Limbaugh, Fox News, etc. Plus I think a lot of our gen didn't serve because apart from Desert Storm, there really weren't any military actions going on when we were of service age.
I graduated high school in 1966. I had no idea how many of my classmates would grow up to be MAGA/Russian bots and/or Nazis.
My sister graduated in 1963. Today, I have connections w/some of her classmates who are nice, normal, sane, people. Whatever happened it was between 1963 and 1966.
They are still bad, just 1/4 of whomever parental figure still hating for nonreason and still brainwashing their poor view of hatred on their children. They are called maga now, but i prefere to call them nazis.
Very funny so many people wanting the comfort and security of Cold War paranoia regarding Russians. The people who defeated Nazism, notwithstanding contributions from the rest, who were at the time Soviets supporting expanding communism globally. Now they're not Soviets at all, you still worried?
International Village.
A city sponsored event bringing together all the different ethnic cultures of Western PA. Music, food, dance. A great intro to our neighbors. Will never forget it.
Remember when that one punk kid in high school used to call every adult who enforced a rule a fascist? And because he was our friend, we’d lovingly rib him, and say “he’s not a fascist.” What a time to be alive.
All the people who fought in WW2 are now dead and gone and can’t remind us of how bad the Nazis were. We should have listened when they were still around
My teenage years. Well that was a long time ago. The 80’s. Definitely NOT New Coke or Coke 2. Not the Cadillac Cimarron or the Yugo. Not parachute pants. Not the Cold War. How bout this…can we bring back MTV?
This isn't a generational problem.
It is a problem of everyone in society.
Fingerpointing is a waste of time. Blame is a waste of time and energy to a problem that can't be fixed with blame. Solutions are the aim now.
??? Did we? I have memories of being constantly harassed by men, grown ass men, when I was a minor. Just because abortion was legal doesn’t mean we were safe.
Thats because rights over your own body are not something you had to march in the streets for. If women and girls’ autonomy over their bodies was something they had to win through court battles then safety was a fundamental concern. Roe v Wade did not end violence against women and girls.
You know what she was talking about. I don't disagree with you, but attacking the OP is over the top, and she didn't say anything about feeling safe; she was talking about rights. Chill.
Congressional oversight. I remember when Senators Goldwater and Baker et al went to the WH and told Nixon that he’d get convicted in a senate trial. Checks and balances at work. Good for democracy.
That the elected members of the Senate and House cared about Democracy and would always do everything in their power to protect it and that we truly had a system of checks and balances.
one of the great lessons of history is that people learn nothing from the great lessons of history.
The basic tenets of fascism and an extreme right wing dictator are there for all to see and hardly anyone recognises it.
State-sanctioned terrorism, political murders, annexation, opposition to UN initiatives, support of regimes, destabilization of other countries. America hasn't quite got all the way there yet. There was hope after the Cold War for a new Russia.
US has done all those same things and worse- which one hasnt the US committed?. Let's not even talk about its genocides and slavery. You just hate Russians, just admit it.
Well, the Americans fought over the question of slavery, at least in part. But Russians continue to support the Putin regime. Do you think Russians have a bad reputation? What about all those good Germans? It's not about the individual but the collective. I don't hate it, but I can't respect it.
He thinks it means something that Zelensky’s grandfather fought in the Red Army. Both of my grandfathers-in-laws fought in the Red Army during WW2. My departed wife was a Soviet Pioneer as a child. These weren’t exactly optional things. The dude is… dim.
while i do in a sense agree with you its like the netenatue leadership of israil you can blame whats going on there on those individuals but that cuts the population who seemingly overwhelmingly support military action even though they dest netenatue and his cohorts free from
responsibility or accountability even if folk agree to turn a blind eye to their countries actions so they make out like bandits hold 'some' accountability if not in active opposition to it in real time
Probably, but their elections are even more discredited than those in the US. Their media is much more biased, too, but people with a free choice tend to gravitate to media that endorses their beliefs anyway.
American elections aren't discredited. It isnt like election denial, rather than admit "like it or not this is where a large portion of US are right now" doesn't look good on the 1/6 plumber cracks but is ok for others.
Russians have been into hard line strongmen leaders even after the collapse of the Soviet Union. A lot of the old world is. They’re stupidly patriotic, like much of the old world and they don’t even know why
I'd love to bring back that sense I had when I was a kid & for most of my life, that something good was waiting just around the corner - hope for the future. When I was upset about something, my mom would always tell me that "this too shall pass." I don't have either of these things anymore.
Great answer! These beliefs need to come back too: truth is objective; facts are important; women have reproductive rights; education & science are good; vaccines are good; the Earth is round; US is a melting pot; its good to be polite; US has separation of church & state; tRump is an effing joke.
That we are a free Democracy free speech,freedom2 peacefully demonstrate without fear because we exercise those freedoms without fear of being sent2a foreign country. That our citizenship isn't thrown out because we disagree w/a Conman that bought his way back in2the WH so he could stay out of jail
Hear, hear.... maybe we also agree, again, that being ignorant is nothing to be proud of; being racist doesn't come with 'special rights' for those so afflicted; and what's 'really down there' among people using a restroom stall is none of our damn business.
This is only a problem for the most imbecilic members of society because the Nazis are, in fact, demonstrably Nazis. There are straightforward ways to prove this beyond any reasonable doubts.
Agree, but also what should come back is teaching EVERY teenager the Constitution in HS, and requiring passing a Constitution test for graduation. Recite the preamble, know all the Bill of Rights and be able to discuss them individually--why they mattered. Then the rest.
Bush 43 said it best,” By sacrificing human life to serve their radical visions […] they follow in the path of fascism, and Nazism, and totalitarianism. And they will follow that path all the way, to where it ends: in history's unmarked grave of discarded lies.”
I think the further a generation is from an event, the less it has an impact on their consciousness. For boomers, the Nazi uniform and swastika are symbols of something horrifying. To GenZ and Millennials, they are something that triggers boomers and that's funny to them.
My point is obvious, it has less of an effect on Millennials as a generation. Not individuals, I know a lot of Millennials don't like Nazis. There are a lot of Nazis that are Millennials.
Nah, the Nazi Millennials are more of a minority. They exist, but not in the droves you're claiming. Most Millennials fall into the former category; we may be removed from World War 2, but we still heard those wartime stories from the grandparents and great-grandparents when we went to visit.
I say this as a Millennial; even the edgiest of us is pretty anti-Nazi. Can't speak on Gen Z, but most of them seem pretty anti-Nazi... now Gen Alpha, on the other hand...
My point is that the further away from an event has less of an impact on generations. How much did boomers know or feel affected by WW1? It happened before we were alive. Spanish American war? My point is what I said it was. I didn't say Millennials are, or love, Nazis. Reading comprehension.
Even among people who lived through WW2, who hated Nazi symbols and recognized Hitler as horribly evil…some of them were ok with fascism if it was “anti-communist.” McCarthy started the Red Scare before the blood was dry from fighting fascism in Europe.
Boomers weren’t around for Nazi stuff but they were around for the Cold War and the threat of atomic brinksmanship. They had air raid drills during grade school where children hid under desks waiting either for the FLASH or the “All clear” over the PA. It must be great to find others’ traumas funny.
Baby boomers grew up in the aftermath of WWII. From books to movies, to TV shows (from major theme to minor characters), WWII and the lessons of the Holocaust were very prominent, and for some of us, a major influence on our thinking about democracy and the dangers of cultism.
And most everyone's father fought in the war. Boomers are a generation that grew up with fathers who had PTSD. Both of my parents served. My brother's first memories are of my father waking up, screaming in the middle of the night.
My uncles served but I never heard them talk about it or act out. They talked about Vietnam though but through the lenses of WW2 vets, not from the pov of Vietvets. They still believed the government made moral choices, not merely economic. Do you think their kids pulled the curtain back on that?
Yes. It's what tore American families apart. My brother didn't register for the draft, and 2 FBI agents came to our house. My father and brother didn't speak for a couple of years. A fist fight broke out at my cousin"s wedding over the war. And the kids were right in the end.
Originally it was the obscenely wealthy pushing to kill off the political elite. Then the masses they coerced turned on them and the whole thing just became a violent mess that didn't stabilize for a long time.
It was great for Democracy in the rest of Europe, though.
And some racists also use diversity and inclusion to mask their racism. Look how sole threw it away so quickly after trump govt put pressure on them. Let the diversity and inclusion lovers pay reparations 1st then we will know they are serious.
Alibi? What are they an alibi for? Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are not bad things to regular people. They ARE bad to people who think that white men and women are inherently qualified for every position and that being denied preference is somehow discrimination towards them.
As a black man, can you tell us what DEI has done for you? It's either nothing, little or what you were already owed. Most DEI lovers are just weird about accepting or diacuss8ng the racist society they live in. Facts are facts.
Lmao, how are you gonna ask me my perspective as a black man, then speak for me anyway? It's because of DEI policies that minorities get what we're owed. Otherwise, employers hire white men who are less qualified, and schools admit white students who are less qualified (or have easier names).
Lmao..what? It's because of dei that minorities get what we are owed? Exactly proves my point that dei is used to delay reparations and true equality, and no, it sold you short, do better, maybe you been brainwashed or feel down, dei is JUST NOT ENOUGH. How u so educated but actually uninformed?
So can you explain why many states and businesses that have DEI are still racist and mistreat minorities but stealthily? Boston is one good example of that. I think DEI is a good start. But it's obviously not enough and used to stall and replace real equality.
First, you have to actually prove that "many states and businesses that have DEI are still racist and stealthily mistreat minorities." Second, you have to prove that this alleged mistreatment is caused by DEI initiatives and not in spite of it.
1. You prove my allegations wrong!! Everyone knows it except you(have you ever asked black people about Boston?), so ironic for a black man in America.
2. DEI is a distraction and construct from making America truly equal and non racist. Why did DEI offices hire so many white women?
Oh, the world still hates nazis. Exhibit A: Tesla's stock price. That's why they keep saying they're not nazis. Our job is to keep spreading the word and reminding everyone that Elon, Miller, and others are, in fact, nazis.

Yes...
You're too ignorant to be fixed...
Next you'll be rounding up Russian Americans and throwing them in camps...
To say we hate Russians would be like us saying that we hate Americans, just because your wannabe Dictator is an Arsehole.
I imagine Putin’s cult has a similar following
