I have a friend with 2 teenage daughters staying with me this weekend. They asked what I got on the SATs and I told them 1390. They replied "Back then, that's really good, right?" and I'm not sure how to respond.

How do you even remember? I took all the tests and can’t recall specifics on any other than my disappointing 3/5 on my French AP test which meant I couldn’t test out of foreign language req in college. Turned out for the best tho, since I took Italiano and more Deutch!
We'll offer them a dollar for every point they get above your score as incentive, and as a lesson in humility. Or ten dollars per point, depending on how wealthy you are, versus how smart they are.
I got 1300 and I was not happy with that score. They have changed so much since I took them though. Scoring, composition, subjects etc were all revamped over the years.
You needing a revenge SAT score is so on brand for you it hurts. 😂
I can relate this this fully- in med school we had a small group that would race to finish tests before each other and we were always at the top of the scores. My fellow mud-fud had a healthier approach- P=MD and there’s a lot more training to go, so she chilled 😂
My first try was a 1420. I convinced my parents it was mediocre and I had to take it again. The reason I didn’t keep retaking was because they caught on and told me I had to pay for extra ones myself 🤣
My mom made me take my SAT and ACT. My SAT score was horrible and my ACT score was passable. Some kids in my class took it twice. (I wasn’t doing that torture) Did you tell them it was impolite to ask a lady her SAT or age?
I can understand why they might cry over the loss of tiktok. People build community there (and though I'm trying to stay off meta - it's hard to imagine completely dumping FB b/c I DO have friends there I don't know in real life and those relationships are meaningful...) They'd recover though ;)
Back then :)
you MUST be over 35. They also will marvel at the fact you're not dead yet and be in utter horror when they find out you still have sex AT YOUR AGE.
Amazingly, there have been many people that really thought history was black and white based on old movies and photos!
They did not know that color film came after black and white!
They just assumed that the world was void of color!
Not that technology advanced!
Can't remember now what I scored, but it's been a long time since 1981. I think it was like 1420 something, but anything over 1200 was considered good. I do recall my ACT score - 31.
High schoolers asked me that a couple years ago and I just said “yeah I never took that, but I got a 24 on the ACT” and they looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. I live in Michigan and the switch to the SAT was the year after I graduated.
Mitten state ftw! i was class of 2014 and my brother 2020, i did ACT for in state school but he got forced to take the SAT for Northwood up in midland, i couldn’t believe it when he told me
They still have the ACT. College advisors are skilled at helping you choose which one to focus on now. 36 is the top score possible. My son got a 35 - equivalent to 1530-1560 SAT. Things are VERY different now. He’s a great student but it used to be that only the very elite got those scores.
Another Michigander here! I knew I wanted to go to Michigan State and the only exam required was the ACT. That was in 1980 and I have no clue what my score might have been. I did go to MSU, though!
My sister would remember all this …she was in “gifted class”…me? Not so much😂. I did graduate high school at age 16 & skipped a year. I had a job at the hospital too. Was I stupid? The hospital did pay for my college classes so…..
The SAT format and scoring algorithms have changed numerous times since 1926. You can't know anything meaningful about someone else's score unless you know when they took it. You could tell them what it was for your year if you know. There are charts on the interwebs that level scores by year.
“Back then…” 😂 This reminds me of the time my then teenage daughter was complaining about a book she had to read for school. I told her I really enjoyed it when I read it at her age. “But that was during the last century, mom.” Brat!!! 🤣
I went to a Cal State school and tuition when I started was $550 per semester. When I finished the tuition for my last semester was $1100. Still a bargain compared to what kids and families pay today. Over $8K today.
I can’t remember my SAT scores, so that tells you something about my memory. I was a National Merit Scholar, tho. And I was accepted by my first choice school. Probably couldn’t get into it, now, given the same education I had at the time.
I've thought a lot about the gatekeeping situation. The image that comes to mind isn’t a closed door but more flow—more people moving through. But there are consequences to everyone having "all" the knowledge, access, or entitlement. Some systems will resist, some will break, and new ones will form.
Open to suggestions on programs to connect with - I'm a diversely-trained biomed + biochem researcher aiming for MD-PhD programs. Hoping that NIH doesn't gut biomed sci training programs. Will move state or country....
Back then you were told on Monday to show up on Saturday, don't be late, you are taking a test. No prep, no camps, just what you've stored in your brain (no do-overs).
Truthfully
That the scoring has changed many times.
Ask if they are worried about getting into a school?
I never took SATs or ACTs. I had no plans on going to college.
I ended up going anyway.
Teens are very stressed out about getting into college.
Going to a state school is not good enough?!
this. i took them in ‘08 and the range had just changed. i think i got a 1490 and that was like a tiny bit below average. i went to jr college and then finished at a university and am now working on a fully virtual master’s. results kinda depend on your plan so figure that out first.
I have multiple graduate degrees.
I was not given much guidance growing up.
My mother told me I could always get married and did not need to go to college.
She denies saying that now.
I was the first one to graduate and the first with a graduate degree. Years later, both of my brothers have master's
I graduated highschool in 2005, so we were the last class that had the old SAT. Even then my friends in the class behind me gave me these pitying looks whenever we talked about our scores. "No I swear! A combined 1330 was GOOD last year!"
"they make such a big deal out of those tests but it changed nothing. The same kids and I still had the same teachers next year. College didn't even look at the individual scores, they only cared about class grades." I didn't even take them and I still got into state university 😂

Now it’s a wealth index.

Responding with violence is never the answer. Just keep telling yourself that so you stay out of jail.

Good on you.
That’s aight
That does mean it’s harder to get into *some* schools.
Of course, I’m a community college dropout who scored a 1490 on my SAT, LOL.
"back then" = 90s
stiil scored high

I hit 1410 when the max was 1600
Still disappointed that I got 750 on the math section
Feel much less intelligent these days!!
Recently a young person reminded I was “born before the internet “
Well fuck, thanks brat
So there 🤘🏻
Not really, but it would have been epic tho
