As gamers, we're used to companies squeezing every last penny out of us:
* Microtransactions
* Season passes
* Loot boxes
* Live service games
But this most recent trend of "Play 3 Days Early if you have the super-duper expensive version" really rubs me the wrong way.

What I really hate about the "playing early" thing. Is when they do the early release on a Friday. So not everyone can play the weekend...
You arn't paying to play early. THATS THE RELEASE DATE! They are witholding the game from you past release date because you didnt give them enough money!
It's just like legally breaking street date. A shop near me used to sell Call of Duty to kids days before it was available to the public.
Better yet let's sub to game pass for €15, not own the game AND STILL buy the €30 upgrade so we can own DLC for a game we don't own
I am so very tired of this shit 😭
My most anticipated game too btw
Gamepass has a lot of upside but that DLC model is a joke. I don't have a better solution but it's a joke.
At least EA and UBI include the MegaTurboRiz Editions in their first-party passes.
Then spoilers get flooded online days before the official release date 😩
It's alienating their player base and I don't know that they've figured that out.
But the lovely early access day is of course Friday 😩
Like, HUH?!??!?
I get its sketchy to prey on hype to squeeze some extra $ but I’ve never found getting a game early an enticing offer
Easy example is Subnautica or Minecraft. Much better than the other systems of release
Remember the online passes they tried to do to recoup some money from trade-ins. That was a laugh 🤣
I am certain POE2 EAccess is like setting up a GoFundMe to finish the game. If you're a fan and want to support good business practices and consumer driven studios, by all means. Trust your gut. Believe me, I'm watching and very tempted to join POE2 this month.
But some games recently have been trying to cost 70$ on Day 1 AND 10$ every couple months forever after.
And that sucks
And it's rare to see a game keep the "exclusive pre release content" as exclusive forever. So paying extra just encourages the release of trash.
On release it was barely an alpha. Didn’t work at all. We all swore off that company and pre ordering after that.
Or maybe we're the minority complaining about it. 😬
My brother in Christ I shouldn't have to. 😭
Yes bro this economy is killing me wtf you mean???
Hyped myself up for this weekend FOR NAUGHT
I saw something that was like "Indiana Jones out this Friday" and didn't know it was just early access (another reason this shit sucks)
*can barely maintain lifestyle due to crushing child support payments and being taken to the cleaners, deservedly, in the divorce*
Yes it's a way for them to make more money off me, but I only do it for games I'm really excited about so think of it as support 😅 with rewards it's not like many of us pay much for Game Pass
I just wish it wasn't. If I could remove it as a thing we do, I would; but I don't judge anyone for partaking, nor do I really blame companies for doing it. :)
Anything else can is unacceptable
Streamers, certainly, but non-streamers fall prey to that mindset as well.. the earlier you find bugs or establish dominance, the more attention you get.
We see this in all sorts of fandoms, not just video gaming.
15 years later, £100+ Valorant gun skins or some other BS.
If we collectively just chilled & didn't buy buggy games, didn't buy overpriced GPUs, didn't fall for the things you listed, then companies would eventually learn.
But since we have no self-control, then we end up rewarding shitty practices by these companies.
I know a guy, only plays COD, HAS SPENT THOUSANDS ON COINS but his justification is that this is the only game he plays 😭
We have to own up to the fact that we waste $ on stupid shit & companies are glad to take that $.
I am taking a stand & not buying another game until I go through my Steam library first.
WHAT IS THAT FUCKING DECISION 😭😭😭
Like we're already too tired to play video games after a busy Monday 😭
This is about companies charging $20-50 *over* the cost of the game just to let you play the game before the official release date, banking on FOMO to pressure people into upgrading
Pre-order early access isn't a bad perk though.
The special weapon, play early, etc etc enticing to get people to upgrade feels even ickier.
A *lot* of the Overwatch community wants them back. They hate the Season Pass model by comparison, and for Overwatch specifically I have to agree with them.
$70 for the base game alone, $100 for a couple more leaders/scenarios and play 5 days early, $130 for a few more leaders/scenarios
Path of Exile 2 can get away with months early for pay is AOK in my opinion because it will be free when it is widely released.
The most you'll get are in-game cash or whatever but god knows if the game itself will be good 🤷
i'm curious how often a "Day One" patch has came out on the 2nd release date because then really sounds like Publishers tricking players in paying in to be Testers as opposed to publishers paying for testers
I feel like the early access stuff used to be a preorder bonus for a lot of games.
I stopped pre-ordering games long ago as I wait until release and reviews before deciding to buy. No matter how much I liked a prior game, or how cool it sounds.
Carry on supporting indie devs, guys😌
Ps: play Nine Sols
Banger.
And you’re right man, they’ve cooked us some special games in the last few years
Been having fun fighting the bosses again with the most recent update.
I’m not saying it’s only AAA publishers, but you see the things Kerron mentioned a whole lot more(or maybe, bigger scale should I say) in AAA games.
I do agree with you tho, sometimes even ea is borderline, a scam😭
I was more referencing things like launch issues/micro-transactions in my response when the post was more about the EA side of gaming.
Dont buy any.
🤣🤣
I dont buy all that crap. If they cant give me a full game without all that I dont want.
There are plenty of games out there that have none of that bullshit. Don't support devs and publishers that do those things.
Generally though, I have smaller problem with early access than the other things you mention because I can easily avoid early access, but I can't escape the others
Since you're still a few days removed from the inevitable day one patch because no one releases a game in a finished state anymore.
