The problem with this article is that the media hasn't been very empathetic here. This isn't a case of "white man kills family" and the photo is him jet skiing. The media has actually been trying pretty hard to shame everyone who is being empathetic to him.
The empathy is coming from social media.
The empathy is coming from social media.

Media’s empathetic coverage of Luigi Mangione reveals an obsession with humanizing white male suspects

Now, if this is some sort of spark that causes a national uprising to fix a broken oligarchicical system then maybe it was worth it. So far I haven't seen any evidence of that.
But weighed against the thousands of objectively bad things corporate leaders do, whether directly or indirectly? Not as simple.
Sure, there are private schools, but we also have public education so no one is left out. Healthcare should have at least that.
His fleeing to Russia did more damage to that image than anything else.
In spite of everything, he IS human.
How do you humanise a human being?
Mind you I do just scroll on by most of the posts about it.
Although the post about people demanding the death penalty for him while shooters of many people in schools get relatively short sentences did hit home.
Like "pweese hate him 🥺"
We were just happy somebody finally fought back. I'm relieved targeting corporate mass murderers is happening.
We are to be shamed for feeling empathy
Conventionally attractive, white cis male, no known marginalizations, built on the foundation of a victim at the top of a universally despised industry.
This feels like what decades of Hollywood antihero cinema have primed us for.
But certain killers (white and handsome) get more attention and sympathy than others, which is messed up AF.
But to be fair in Act 2 is just a pallet swap and Act 3 is a version of him with three heads.
No ... but when *millions* of suffering fellow citizens are being severely harmed & often to their deaths and the perpetrators are clearly given *qualified immunity* as members of the *wealthy Elite* then violence is unavoidable.
Seems to be happening on all sorts of scales these days
Luigi

Please.
This is weak.
The evidence is clear: a publicly funded healthcare system leads to longer life expectancy and better overall health. Here a blueprint
The Guardian’s faux impartial stance is part of the problem.
LM hasn’t been found guilty of anything, in fact he’s innocent.
But it does look like they’re trying to make him look like a Batman villain in the press which could influence a jury member’s impartiality. If the victim were black?…..
Also, whatever, The Guardian, we're so far beyond caring what you MSM people think.

Pundits are consistently surprised by this.
Part of me can't help think that he's just some spoiled kid who grew up with every benefit thinking the system was designed for him to exploit.
And then he snapped just like a school shooter
Part me of gets it
If he was black, it would not be like this
I have not seen a single piece of journalistic media sympathetic to Luigi
Otherwise it's been lots of "surprise" and, like you said, shame pointed at anyone feeling any positivity in it.
"mass murderer treatment"
where he's rarely named
and his photo rarely used
to discourage copycats?
Media is desperate to not have a martyr for folks going after the pointy end of capitalism.
But acquitted subway strangler and white RW media darling Daniel Penny is right there, folks. All I'm saying...
Hey Guardian: What a crock of shit. This is why legacy media is dying, unjust corporatism.
Legacy media, owned by billionaires, is working overtime to try and tell us this is bad. I'm hoping most folks aren't buying it, but the US did just vote a billionaire into office with his ultra-billionaire buddy being allowed to lobby Congress for no good reason.
Oh. I see it now that I typed it out. Let's just keep paying up and shutting up.
“What do you mean they love Robin Hood, they should be loving us more!”
People empathize w the fact rich kid kills CEO who kills innocent people.
They do not see color,
They merely like what he did.
What happened to you @theguardian.com ?
Fascists cut your balls too?
Goetz even manson and beyond
Its a well trodden path
I think their efforts have been much less successful because the assassin in this case is also a white male.
Like, fascism's whole deal is closing what counts as the 'inner-circle' more and more, so saying Italians are 'white' is part of it
It's a variable group so they can kick you out/let in as need be
This all Makes sense
That's actually hilarious.
Or maybe people empathise because the health care system in the US is a dystopian nightmare. If people weren't angry at it too, they wouldn't.
Any attempt to make it about the color of his skin--when that is so far removed from what he did and why he did it--is just a weak attempt to divide and distract.
motivations to pathologize them. To empathize w/someone, you must first be able to imagine yourself in their position.
If Mangione were Black, he may not even have survived arrest. We should start there

I absolutely f--king acknowledge coverage of non-white accused vs white is f--ked up. Yes he'd be a hell of a lot likelier dead if Black. But this case and this media ain't it.
the phenomenon itself is indisputable
I’m telling you, if you haven’t read it you are missing a CLASSIC example here
Identify politics are being stolen by Elites to bludgeon us into unproductive conversations that obscure class dynamics at times that they are clearly the most appropriate lens to use

Whiteness™️ isn’t about looks.
It’s a system our current media reinforces and protects.
I'm so disappointed in the guardian.
if he had been dealt with quietly, in the background with little or no public 'parading' people would have dropped off of it
but making a martyr of him, parading him around like he's hannibal lector has only made him a folk hero
When Luigi is facing terrorism charges and life in prison.
The media spins the narrative every which way for propaganda purposes.
That problem would sort itself...
We do after all live in a rotten, greedy, unjust system of Ceos, landlords and billionaires making life worse for the lower classes.
I’m gonna stick with supporting health care workers and M4A.
