RDR2 is still the most technically impressive game, right? I'm following all the rivers around and it's just astonishing how beautiful and detailed it is. And it's 8 years old at this point. Wild.

I've tried RDR2 a few times and I just can't get into it.
Does it get good at some point? I'm always like "The random shoot outs will stop and the free world part will start any moment now, right" and it just doesn't.
The fact that railroads and houses actually build in real time is fricken nuts to me. You can come back months later in the game time and it’ll be done or much further progressed than how you left it.
It came out in October 2018. You are almost two years off my friend. Time flies by fast enough, why rush it even more? :D
But yes, RDR2 is insane. Playing RDR1 rn and the narrative is on par so far, but it feels almost like a cheap knockoff, when it comes to physics and detail.
I was a massive fan of RDR (1). I played RDR2 on day one and religiously. Then my disc drive crapped out. By the time I could revisit RDR2, it was a struggle to relearn everything. It was totally worth it, though. Few games moved me like RDR2. Masterful work on every level.
Yeah. Could be interesting to not have such a linnear game in like missions. But GTA 6 will almost definetally still follow the formula of the older games.
Try hunting, if you like. There's a world full of exploration (for no good reason), and that is maybe the best part for me. So many encounters and things to do that only reward you with having spent the time to do them, no secrets, no upgrades, nothing other than having done it and it took time.
RDR2 is a good example of a game with a disgusting emphasis on visual presentation and detail, but it’s an essential part of the game. It wouldn’t be the same artistic achievement otherwise.
its one of the greatest achievements of all time, especially crazy considering how the gameplay is the same R*star weak ass bullshit.
Granted, storytelling and VA makes it all worth it ofc, but I really wish they had more for gameplay than the same old GTA "Go here, talk to this person, kill guys"
and im saying this as someone who considers it in my top 10.
The worldbuilding is insane. I just cant imagine how good a game they could make if they like actually innovated their core gameplay loop. They arent anywhere near as guilty of this as Bethesda tho
I’ve got to say as I’ve grown older I’ve really enjoyed a familiar and easy logic to a game like this. I could play variations of rdr2 (like same experience different setting) for a decade
That is fair, and no disrespect intended. However Im a true hardcore gamer (tm) and I feel like rockstar has innovated on so much except for gameplay. The gameplay is the same as gta3 and 4, and the wanted systems in games since are objectively worse than they were in those games.
I feel like any 15 year old gamer could design a wanted system better than the one they gave us in RDR2, in like 10 minutes of riffing. There isnt much excuse for that in a game that is literally 10/10 otherwise.
Of the List, only Elden Ring is different.
Just finished Ghost of Tsushima. Good game, well done, same stuff as all other AAA open world : Get quest, follow marker, do some killing, have a generic cutscene ( that you can't skip!) , rinse repeat.
It's one of the best wild west games out there. You see the fictional world build around you as you play. Your choices have consequences. You can do things for the hell of it like Rob a bank.
It's still so wonderfully done. I spent a lot of time in that game just riding around, exploring, hunting, going into the mountains to stock up on furs and supplies, etc
the thing that i wanted from rdr2 (slow, fiddly, deeply detailed and complex with lots of interlocking busywork systems) is actually pretty present in Vintage Story which i’ve been enjoying lately. and it doesn’t have a bunch of boring gunfights to trudge through to get to the fun busywork
this is so real! also i don’t have to watch arthur approach the end of the game… i don’t have a rideable elk yet, but the 1.20 release is great so far (colored clay?!)
Actual release of Red Dead Redemption 2 was 6 and a bit years ago, not 8. Still doesn't feel as long as that and my guess is the pandemic truncating time.
And it's incredibly well-optimized on PC nowadays too. I have a 4060oc (low profile) connected to a 4k tv in my bedroom and it stays near 60fps with dlss while still looking great. Running it in Max/Native settings on the 5090 I just got doesn't look THAT much better, imo, which is v impressive.
That game made me feel the stakes were so much higher. There were many different ways to solve the next mission check point, which let you be much more creative with gameplay. There is no real aim assist, and shooting a bow from a horse is much more challenging than six shooter.
Masterpiece of a game. The way it emotionally pulled me in. The way I felt when I finished the game. There are amazing games but this one has absolutely everything you could ever want to experience in a game.
It's only just barely starting to get to the point where you can spot muddier textures or more simplistic lighting or foliage details compared to modern games. batshit.
every time someone talks about this game using that acronym I need to restart the sentence because I get so confused about how it relates to the bleep bloop droid from star wars
Yeah the way the landscape is crafted, the light, the wildlife, the sound design… it all makes it so believable. Few games, if any, have managed to recreate this in an open world. Something always breaks the illusion.
Hey there! I just launched my product on Product Hunt, and I’d really appreciate your support with an upvote! 😊

I love how it can be a loud outrageous shoot em up or this very meditative solo journey in a person’s soul and oneness with nature. I hope GTA6 has that dichotomy within it.

I've seen plenty in person, have no desire to also see them in a game.

RDR2 was absolutely magnificent
But yes, RDR2 is insane. Playing RDR1 rn and the narrative is on par so far, but it feels almost like a cheap knockoff, when it comes to physics and detail.
Only other game that gets me to just wander and appreciate the beauty is No Man's Sky. 900 hours in and it still blows me away sometimes
Graphics? Sure.
Mechanically or codewise? not really
But ya, a great game.
Cyberpunk. Death Stranding. Witcher 3.
Seeing what's happening with DS2 is mind blowing.
it got glowing reviews across the board, and still does to this day

Also cant wait to check out the new update with my bud we are prob gonna play a whole new campaign.
I honestly dont want that type of gameplay in RDR2 though, just something more than the basic GTA loop
The worldbuilding is insane. I just cant imagine how good a game they could make if they like actually innovated their core gameplay loop. They arent anywhere near as guilty of this as Bethesda tho
RDR2 has a level (or 3) of polish that other games in the genre don't.
Just finished Ghost of Tsushima. Good game, well done, same stuff as all other AAA open world : Get quest, follow marker, do some killing, have a generic cutscene ( that you can't skip!) , rinse repeat.
Elden Ring ruined other open worlds for me.
This is why I’m not worried about GTA6 delays. RDR2 was perfection.
(I've never played it, it's not for me)
Indies are closing the gap in visuals, some are even catching up in scope, and long ago exceeded them in creativity.
Released Oct 26, 2018.
And I say this as someone who watches all your dumbass river videos lol. Just recognized your pfp, and who I was talking to. you rule dude. followed.
everything you said is true tho
I must line up RDR2 for some time in the future.

It can't be 8 years ago
