I genuinely believe everyone should attempt to read Moby Dick at least once. Yes it's long. But I'm telling you it is such a fascinating source of period whaling practices mixed with a genuinely interesting narrative about the brutality of working on a 19th century whaling ship

Trying to find a pair of benches to sleep on... and then meeting QueQue...
I still think it's funny.
And a salutary tale about biodiversity destruction and loss
It cut the book down to pretty much the pacing of the 1956 movie.
Recently got a copy of the full book and it's almost a different book lol
(having read moby dick though, I do have to agree it’s fascinating, if you’re not looking just for the narrative and want to learn about the importance of knots and other things)
A classic
The film is great
But the book is far grittier and captivating
Also where Starbucks got the name for their company
I should probably hit it again before I die.
Here's Ahab spinning around in his "pivot-hole"
This is really cool too.
I read that and don't know if it's true but it's based around some language law, who's name escapes me. Lenz? Something like that?
Leviathan by Mastodon
40 years go by . . .
My son re-recommended the book when he was about 20 years old and I was in my fifties.
And I absolutely loved it!
…that said it is Whale “Facts”: The Book as well.
I think it will take me longer to read the book than the voyage itself.
Remember (I tell myself), it’s the trip, not the destination.
Maybe I'll give it another go now that I understand why I hated it better and 20+ years have passed.
Its just a slow reading. I hereby deem it valid.

First time read it while working on cargo/exploration vessel in Arctic :)
I went in thinking the book would be a great adventure.
I was wrong. Ahab was wrong. Sometimes (still rarely) the destination isn’t worth the pain.
The best opening lines of any book I've ever read 🥰
And you'll NEVER guess what happens to the captain at the end.... 😉
How often do you get to spend a weekend and read an entire novel? With friends?
