Trans people, including student athletes and their parents have been screaming from the rooftops about this but a lot of people, including many liberals have ignored them.

The case for non discrimination in youth sports is that sports encourage physical fitness, teamwork, good sportsmanship, persistence and resilience, all which are good for youth health. Banning trans children from sports hurts physical and emotional health.
PLUS: Blaming children who just want to kick/throw/hit a ball/run fast/swim/etc with their friends because colleges don't want to be affordable for working families is misguided and evil.
And finally: Sports isn't fair and it entirely about people using their physical advantages to win. Sports governing bodies are capable of determining the line between "natural advantage" and "cheating" and have almost universally determined that trans athletes play fair and square.
You can even sound moderate when you talk about this! I don’t think big government needs to be getting involved in who gets to play what sports or determining what is fair. I trust sports governing bodies to make and enforce the policies that make sense for their sport.
Having played rugby in past decades with trans athletes, I absolutely cannot wrap my mind around people getting up in arms over this bullshit. Every single loudmouth keyboard warrior who spouts off on this should have to stand on an open pitch holding a ball while a trans rugger tackles them.
You do though. Black people did. Gay people did. Now it's your turn. You cant just wish the society you want into existence. We live in a terribly designed democracy, with a right wing judiciary. You need the public on your side to guarantee your rights.
The idea of public approval of social justice issues being a consistent upward line with the exception of prohibition ignores the entirety of civil rights history.
We had Black congresspeople in 1870 before we had Jim Crow. We had same sex marriage in 1971 before marriage bans.
They jettison their humanity for what? To keep their job in politics? We've collectively elected people who have no principle that they won't abandon at the first sign of difficulty. Hard to imagine we are the descendants of revolutionaries with this level of abject cowardice.
Yeah, and his veto on the sports bill got overridden too, which is maybe why he caved on the likely even more fractious “your child might be assigned to room with a trans person” bill.
Not defending it exactly, but ultimately the case he lays out in the letter is what I’m pointing to here.
Spencer Cox also "cried" publicly for LGBT people in 2016.
I'm assuming you're new to any Utah related politics. Cox's words are hollow. He has been revealing who he is to the outside world more and more every day. Utahns have known since the very beginning.
I agree. Thrown all the purity politics ornpther compromises on the table, it still should not be true that the Gov of Utah made a stronger case against anti-trans activism than anyone in the Democratic national echelon.
As another person said, the entire Democratic party voted last week to defend trans people from discrimination and this entire site consciously refused to acknowledge it while jerking off over a single out of context quote from a Republican.
Not saying I love the guy. He’s a conservative Republican!
I’m saying that if he can mount a logical, compassionate argument along these lines from his position as a straight, white, MORMOM male, it shouldn’t be that hard for any normal Democrat to do so rather than duck or triangulate.
you should at least be clear that messaging is *from 2022*, not 2024. attach dates & context to things so people understand this is not the current position of ANY elected Republican.
Entirely so. Also, see Cox's current stances (yes, sometimes on the graves in Arlington for a photo op with his Nazi hero). His messaging in 2022 was an insincere message totally out of keeping with everything he has done since that time.
even then he was shit, see also him talking about "radical leftist BLM antifa thugs" in the same breath as "J6 rioters" for people who should experience "law and order"
lol this having 1/20th as much engagement as the post lavishing praise on a Republican for being akshually more supportive of trans rights than the entire Democratic party
Except that the GOP Utah gov completely reversed this stance and has endorsed discrimination against trans kids, adults and allies. Check his history in 2023, 2024, and 2025 including his immediate signing of HB269 to see his actual takes. https://le.utah.gov/Session/2025/bills/enrolled/HB0269.pdf
Utah Dems have used the arguments fairly consistently. So far, they have not decided to follow the advice of national consultants and bail on support for trans people. So far.
100% of senate dems voted against the bill to ban trans kids from sports. There’s plenty of dems fighting the good fight. We don’t need to hand it to a fascist that once said something that wasn’t genocidal before changing his mind.
It looks like Erich took the information about Cox as current---probably an honest mistake--and posted the content as valid. Again, an honest enough mistake, and one that many Utahns took as sincere from Cox. In every subsequent year Cox has proven his own lack of a spine and sincerity.
Giving me too much credit. I knew it was old (not all the details on his reversals) but was more focused on establishing that it is both rhetorically and politically possible to message like this and affirmatively support these human rights, not promoting Cox per se. I could have been more direct.
But you can say newsom is shitty while still recognizing that Dems are 100% better across the board on trans rights. There’s definitely tons of examples in action, way better than the shitty Utah Republican that once said something sane
Think about why you object to recognising trans rights, and no other human rights.
That's the definition of bias. And before you say, sports don't matter, it's unfair. Correct, sports don't matter and if you had a basic understanding of transgender medical science you'd be embarrassed for yourself.
Not the main point, but...... . Prohibition was hardly a classic Progressive policy. Progressives tended to be urbanites and by and large, they hated Prohibition. TR hated Prohibition. The heart of prohibition was conservative small-town Protestants (Dems and Repubs) but not really progressives.
I’ve spent my career advocating for trans athletes. Conservatives have been effective in stoking a moral panic around trans people. Helps that they’re funded by oligarchs wanting to exploit this
woodrow wilson was a progressive, to put that in context. the early 20th century progressive movement would not be consider progressive today it would be considered pre-Nazi
Prohibition was a progressive cause because the thinking at the time was that drunkenness was a societal evil directly tied to things like spousal abuse and child abuse.
The main drivers for prohibition were the same people pushing for women suffrage and safer working conditions in factories.
Prohibition was not a progressive cause. Certainly not primarily. Wayne Wheeler and the Anti-Saloon League opposed it on Christian religious grounds, considering excessive alcohol consumption a gateway sin that led to further sinning. Where do these people come up with this ahistorical nonsense?
Doesn't Ken Burns have a popular documentary on the Prohibition and how it was pushed by evangelicals in the South against Blacks and Know Nothings in the North against the Catholics?
Using that post above as indicative of all, 'trans issues' is way off base; trans people are just part of group #9,433 that asshole GOPers demonize 24/7
It's strategic, just like demonizing gay marriage in the aughts, drag queens recently, immigrants always, black people always, Jews in 1930's, etc
The civil rights movement was also led by religious people. Prohibition was a progressive cause because alcohol is a cancer to society. It causes needless violence and suffering. That's why women supported it. It lead to drastic reductions in alcohol consumption that improved public health
this is tangental to your main point that liberals are seriously dropping the ball on trans rights, but like, prohibition was a bad cause that was ultimately driven by religious beliefs being imposed on the public at large to control vices, so of course it failed lol
I like the weird implied concession that trans people need to do the advocacy here. Isn’t he pretending to be on their side? Can’t he simply articulate the reasoning he used to get there?

Trans youth also want affordable college!

You must be pleased with the new president.
Let me guess, it's the economics and not the social policies you object to.

It was a way to improve

Even well educated adults that I know, incorrectly misinterprets pride celebrations across the country in recent years to mean population explosion.
