It’s a fascinating article. I love the description how the United States (pre-colonization) had so much wildlife roaming around without borders before they were, frankly, exterminated by humans.
I think it's safe to say it's not dressing up in drag to lipsync to Donna Summer on the weekend. It wouldn't be able to walk in 10 inch Stelletos or apply makeup.
There will always be that subset of people who feel better about themselves after they've killed a wild creature they have no plans to eat or feed to their families
The people testified to the Nevada Wildlife Commision to ban coyote killing contests. The members were shown cruel/vile videos of these aholes during the contests. 70% of Nevadans want them banned. So, what did the Commission decide? To hold more meetings to give defenders more time to justify them
I read once that the use of exclamation points indicates poor communication skills.
I only have an Associates degree in data processing and information administration, 3.8 GPA, plus 20 yrs of experience so what do I know. 🤣
Our neighborhood mascot - a female coyote named Tripod, who lost her back right foot somehow, but has managed nonetheless. Here she is catching some morning sun.
Deplorables in United Conservative Party of Alberta put hunting outfitter in charge of the henhouse.
If any British Columbia grizzly bears or cougars wander into #Alberta & get shot, we will sue greedy Danielle Smith’s ass & greedy motherf*cker Todd Loewen
Say, maybe you can tell me: I live in central Iowa, and we have some small red foxes here. Last year, we had one that was just trotting around the middle of my tiny town, even tried to jog right up to me sitting on the steps before I yelped at it. Was it likely sick? 🤔
I wondered as she just came literally running right up to me. I had 2 small cats so I didn't want them meeting up with her if she was ill. She certainly wasn't nervous of me. I gave that little yelp when she was about 1.5 feet in front of me that startled her and she ran off.
If they stick to natural areas then they should be free to live their natural existence. If they move into our unnatural human controlled areas then they need to be unnaturally human controlled.
Livestock guardian dogs can keep a perimeter around the flock without the need for shooting or traps.
I have friends in Alberta Canada who own sheep. They have two or three LGDs and they’ve never lost a sheep.
One time a dog had blood on him, so proof that he kept a predator away.
As a rehabber (UT) I was blessed to work with "Jack" for over a yr. a youngster confiscated by our state's wildlife division (DWR). Utah forbids rehabbing coyotes, but he was brought to us for "safe keeping". Not allowed to release him, he is now at the Navajo Nation zoo in AZ. a great experience!❤️
You hunt to feed your family that's it. And you never hunt predators only prey items. That's how I was taught that's how I'll continue to live. And for God's sake don't hunt in national parks.
That is untrue and I have a hard time believing you know much about trapping. It is outdated, cruel, unnecessary, and it should be banned. I know exactly what it looks like when dogs, cats, and other non-targeted species get trapped and it's grotesque.
We have them all over my area. People work hard to protect their livestock and pets. Invariably there are still some tragedies. I can hear them at night in the distance. Nature. In my back yard during the day.
We're a city of about 65k people.. but a few blocks over is open fields.
We have a couple herd of deer who come eat from our bird feeders.... I'm pretty sure we've had a mountain lion in the neighborhood, too but I don't have any pictures or video..
Us too. I live in a small, rural farming community and we hear them in the hills all the time. Sometimes somebody will lose a cat to them, so that's why I keep all of mine indoors.
I take spiders out of my house and set them up in a nice spot away from traffic. I can’t even imagine looking into the eyes of a creature as beautiful as this and killing it.
Urban coyote have been here for the last few years. A few esp large ones in the area too. We just don’t leave our dog out by herself- tho she has a bark of a 150 lb dog in her 45 lb body & she alerts when she hears the coyotes call. They really are beautiful animals.
I’ve read about small dogs being out in their yards alone especially celebrities with these huge mansions and I guess they think a coyote wouldn’t be brazen enough to try during the day. If you know there are coyote best advice is stay w/ur pet or child.
I have had sheep / lambs, raised about 2000 in 30 years. Have always kept a couple 2-3 Maremma livestock guard dogs. Coyote don’t dare to get inside my fencing. I have never had to shoot one.. not a single one.
The Maremma Sheepdog, also known as the Maremmano-Abruzzese Sheepdog, a large, white, Italian livestock guardian dog with a history dating back 2,000 years from the Abruzzi and Maremma regions of Italy, two breeds, the Pastore Abruzzese and Pastore Maremmano, crossbred while seasonally moving flocks
Ask anyone who has had a pet killed by one or the mom in Renton who's 5 year old child was attack. Your bleeding heart is bleeding for the wrong species.
So you knew there were coyotes around why'd you leave your pets out ??? Why leave a five year old unattended outside ???
You might want to learn to take some responsibility because scapegoating wildlife like this isn't going solve your problem.
Reminds me of the time a family of foxes set up den right in the middle of campus during the Spring Semester. It was so much fun to watch the babies playing.
Thanks! I was trying to keep a respectable distance, then had to yell at another park visitor who started chasing after the poor thing. What is with people???!!! 🙄
A ranger at Yellowstone told us he had to intervene when a man tried putting his small child on top of a buffalo for a picture. WTF?!?!? People treat our National Parks like they’re in Disneyland. We need to reinstate outdoor education in our schools. 🤦♀️
My dad was a rancher and a range life biologist. Believe me, I have read this and many other books about coyotes. If a sheep or goat rancher doesn’t have a couple of burros, or Great Pyrenees, Akbash, they are going to lose stock.

I know this thread is a bit contentious but I have learned some fascinating facts from it, I had no idea that donkeys/burros were used to protect livestock. Donkeys live 33 years?! How awesome. Picked up that book too. Gracias a todos.
Living with a wolf hybrid the past 9 years has given me a deep appreciation for these animals and an abhorrence for anybody who would derive pleasure or sport from killing them.
I agree that is the ideal situation, but sometimes animals get loose without us knowing and not everyone can afford to care for larger animals. I still try not to get mad at wild animals. Humans who drive badly are a bigger threat.
There's one in my neighborhood. I call him Pockets. He generally keeps to himself and doesn't cause trouble, but I keep my cats indoors all the same. More so since there are also owls 🫤
I'm guessing that thought never crosses your mind at the grocery store, drive-thru, or a restaurant. And if you're vegan or vegetarian, wild animals are displaced by farms
I have video of a lone coyote leading me, in my truck, away from the pack who are trying to get to my chickens inside a barn on a very cold morning. If I see them on my property I handle them. They’re a nuisance.
Not real bright.
Shooting them disturbs the pack dynamic and causes them all to breed and not just the alpha male and female. All those new mouths to feed need more chickens to eat 😎
Or you could build a better fence, save yourself a lot of time and money and not kill the coyotes.
Yes, I suppose I could build a 6’ fence that tapered out with razor wire like a prison that would keep them out. If only it was movable so my hens didn’t tromp around in their own manure after a couple days. What do you suggest I do about my cats?
If your cats are eating your chickens then why are you blaming the coyotes ?
If you don't want wildlife on your property you need to build a better fence. Oh and I'd recommend smooth wire, electric fence. Works like a charm, although the spacing will need to be close for the cats 😇
Respectfully, I agree they’re beautiful animals and I like to hear them, I know they do more in rodent prevention than harm to farmers. fencing for poultry isn’t a realistic deterrent to coyotes. Not for ranged poultry & I won’t cage an animal. I rarely have an issue.
The fence might not keep the birds in, but I lived on a ranch for over a decade and the right electric fence will keep coyotes out. The issue is the size of the area you'd like to fence. It's not just coyotes either, fox, raccoons, anything in the weasel family will also take chickens.
Get a Great Pyrenees or a Turkish Akbash and stop complaining. You don’t have the smarts to keep livestock if you’re not going to get a livestock guardian. 🤪
Here in the south they are demonized. I once pulled over and chased one back into the woods that was in a nearby neighborhood because I didnt want one of the neighbors to try to harm it
No, but they are dog killers. I HATE them. My elderly English Shepherd was slaughtered and eaten by a pack of them. Only blood & bits of hair was left. It will be 2 years in April. My female is too afraid to go outside after dark. I have to stand on the porch and watch when she goes pee.
The universe is always teaching us lessons.
You've learned to not leave your ELDERLY pets outside unsupervised.
You should be thanking coyotes for dropping that knowledge on you.
Wolves are fascinating creatures and hugely important to the landscape.
I’ve got two that I fingerpainted in my profile photo.
It’s called ‘ Back Of The Pack’
We have a lot in LA. They are after all native to this area. But people keep freaking out about coyotes in suburbs. Idiots! (Meaning suburbanites; coyotes are smart)
Whenever question why I see wolf hunting as a disgusting barbaric practice I always reply with "Two reasons: One, they were here first. Two, dogs are better than people."
Beautiful mammals. Intelligent and adaptable, much like ourselves. It’s a shame our sprawling population and reliance on ranged herd animals puts them at risk. I’ve seen how dangerous they are in packs but they have as much right to the land as us.
People in NH don't shoot them for sport, they are classified as fur bearing varmints. Wait until a few eat your cat or dog and your opinion may change.
…one of mine was eaten by a ‘yote as a kid but I don’t blame the coyote: I blame my mother for not letting the cats sleep inside when she knew we had a coyote problem.
Hey I didn't say that I shoot anything, simply stated the facts. A local shepherd keeps a couple of Maremmanos (Italian sheepdogs) to protect their flock from coyotes.
Wear bells or anything that makes noises when hiking in forested and wilderness areas. Animals will be warned and you will likely never see https://them.you surprise animals they will eat you if your not careful. Remember, you're in their environment, they are not in yours.
Having the privilege of watching wildlife do their thing IS the trophy. We are but caretakers of this planet and its inhabitants. It belongs to no one.
yea we’ve got a ton of coyotes in this dried up river bed behind my neighborhood. they pretty regularly are seen walking down the streets too. they’re little, and have thin coats. i honestly thought this was a wolf at first lol. they’re so beautiful either way
We don't need to hunt for anything anymore. Hunting is not important for the majority of people and hunting for sports should be banned. Unless we are hunting billionaire CEOs who hoard money and kill people for greed.
So true. Not a trophy, not for sport. We dont own them . They deserve to live. No one needs their fur except them. I sign every petition I get to protect them all. We need to pass the SAFE act.
They released coyotes in the PA mountains to control the deer population many years ago. Fine except they don’t stay in the mountains. Here in southern PA we now have a hybrid they call a coywolf. Not fine! Why does man have to screw with nature? This didn’t happen organically.

Coyotes keep the invasive feral cats in check, saving our songbirds.
Well they might be, I can't speak enough wolf to ask them politely.

As all living creatures
Some fish for sport.
Some just like to kill fish.

If humans don't want them in a given area then humans can build an adequate fence.
Clearly slaughtering the wildlife isn't working out.
I have friends in Alberta Canada who own sheep. They have two or three LGDs and they’ve never lost a sheep.
One time a dog had blood on him, so proof that he kept a predator away.
But that's no excuse to go shooting at anything that moves. The solution is to reintroduce wolves.
Killing coyotes doesn't lead to less coyotes.
They keep the balance. We destroy the balance with greed.

My wife's best friend watched a pack of them nearly lure a GSD to his death (he got away.. owner still doesn't keep him fenced) they are so smart..
We have a couple herd of deer who come eat from our bird feeders.... I'm pretty sure we've had a mountain lion in the neighborhood, too but I don't have any pictures or video..
No Rats in Alberta, CA.. so.. no rats here..
We have urban deer also

Domestic dogs kill about every two weeks.
Not need hoom fren.

I had a similar experience with sea turtles off Maui. Wild animals do not want you to pet them, people! 😲
These animals devastate farms.
If hunting disturbs you, don’t watch.

Some anecdote about your father is a nice story, but the data you asked for…
Are you suggesting dogs and donkeys to protect livestock?
It’s cruel…barbaric …utterly stupid.
My statement holds true for coyotes, too.
In Wisconsin they have coyote killing contests.
Shooting them disturbs the pack dynamic and causes them all to breed and not just the alpha male and female. All those new mouths to feed need more chickens to eat 😎

I don't like when they leave half eaten avocado or poop in our yard, but they were here first so I can deal.
We just learned to keep our pets inside after a coyote got one of our cats.
