In today’s adventures in AI and teaching, I found myself BAFFLED by a student’s bibliography because all of the links in the bibliography went to the articles they referenced in their paper and were real articles, but the citations were completely made up

But it cannot, alas.
It literally just MAKES SHIT UP
I could have sworn there was a page where you put in the name, title, author, etc and it just spits it out for you?
But it is not actually easier because it gives you nonsense!
(Which they were told but they did not listen 😭)
"DAMMIT, I THOUGHT YOU KNEW THAT STUFF, I COPIED OFF YOU AND FAILED!"

You don't even need these AI companies for this type of stuff.
AI companies are just trying to muscle in and steal customers from other Tech companies that actually have properly working software...
Collapsing properly working good Tech businesses.
Forbid students something and they’re gonna find a way to use it.
But warn them, and then let the FAFO for themselves?
That’s what education IS imo. Those are the lessons that stick.
Papers turned out better than I expected.
Fantastic line.

Also it’s open source
And even that seem hard for some of them to really take in.
I told them it makes up citations and told them I’d be googling three random citations from each paper to make sure they were real AND YET
They were completely imaginary.
And yet!
But also, citations aren't that hard. Come on students.
don't judge me, i've been up all night studying

HAVE COPY PASTE CITATIONS FOR JOURNAL ARTICLES.
Plus https://citationmachine.net exists? And will do the exact same formatting from a link like this.
It uses boring old standard algorithms that have worked since the early 00’s 🤷♀️
Where's the time traveler who's supposed to fix all this?!?!
I think openAI has a much more robust marketing budget than whatever citation generator your referencing
Which is sad that it probably comes down to that since the original poster said they even introduced those tools to their students
Reminds me of a lower stakes version of glaucoma patients I’d see suffer further vision loss because “my cousin who is a chiro/whatever said to not use drugs”
