game dev pro tip:
if you're struggling with motivation, try setting realistic goals
like "today i will open the project folder"
or maybe even "today i will look at one (1) line of code"

That pain is felt 😭
Visual artist, just get a single line or color right.
What ever you do, just make a tiny bit of progress if that all you got the energy for. No need to make big progress every day.
I'll provide any updates if I find my files.
start REALLY small, make REALLY REALLY tiny projects, gradually move up in scale
A realistic goal for picking a project back up is to find the last thing you were working on, which could be a breakpoint in your code or a test case you wrote but still doesn't pass.
Break down the task until it can’t be broken down further.
But often I get over that first hurdle, and this really start to flow.
Thanks for the encouragement! I needed that!
sometimes work got done, other times i boot up Minecraft 🗿
Then, "as long as I'm here...." starts to kick in.
Trick yourself, when necessary, IMHO.
Then, a month later, wash one dish you’ve “let soak” and

open terminal
“code .”
make a coffee
turn on youtube video
play game
(i use gamemaker)
and excitement. Even if you won’t, you will feel accomplishment and that always helps.
I quickly came to that realization, and it made me appreciate other people's work so much more.
I used to overburden myself with a bunch of expextations on my game and i started doing this and its helped me tremendiously
Instead of "finish all this by sunday" i do like "work on part of a map today" and the scaled back work load has kept the burnout away.
Love this.
Thanks Mors
When I feel I lack the motivation to cook, I start by making a cup of tea, then ask myself if I want to continue. The answer is almost always yes.
The hardest part is getting started.
You said *REALISTIC* goals. I'm going to need you to tone it down a little there, friend.
"I will draw ten sectors today"; "I will place ten brushes today".
realistically I will try to fix the 'work' hard drive soon
And what happens if you take the entire day to open the proect folder?
In Uni I read the assigned readings during Skyrim loading screens.
I always just told myself to just read one paragraph. Usually I ended up reading more than that.
Tommorow, another.
Then, I will, at some point, realize I am actually writing King of Dinosaurs x King from Tekken fanfiction, and then look at actual code.
And then your brain goes "Holy shit, I'm kicking this list's ass!"
I'll open the folder tomorrow.
Just sayin'.
(playtests the same level for an hour and calls it a day)
"opening Unity, and loading the project so I don't have to wait for the load time once I'm actually ready to work"
ends up being the only thing done for the day 😅
The FOSS https://activitywatch.net/ software helps you keep track of time spent on each window
Blue is the total time I spent on Game dev "Work", red being playing games and watching youtube.
Give it shot!
Haha. na. This is a brilliant way to self-motivate
