okay but when Tolkien insisted LOTR wasn't allegory he meant that in a very specific sense of things in his stories having a one-to-one connection with things in the real world or his beliefs, and wasn't suggesting there was no symbolism or references in his works at all.
Although tbf he allowed the audience to reach its own conclusions- it was only the staging he wanted to retain control over.
I know when I was underwater in that subculture, it was well accepted that it was a Christian allegory
And they argued about taking this tack in their writing?
Like very very different writing philosophies.
