Have been in my office all day and haven’t had the chance to talk to too many people but, for me, the lines were:
Screening international students according to politics;
Ratting out international students who have “conduct violations;”
…
Implying that faculty who are “activists” (ie don’t share admin’s politics) are not scholars and should be dismissed;
Attacking untenured faculty;
Implying hiring and admissions weren’t already merit based and reducing admissions to standardized measures;
“Plagiarism” checks of all faculty; & more
It seems they demand the elimination of ideological litmus tests, and then, in the very next sentence, requires viewpoint consideration in new hires and admissions in the reform process. Which is basically a 'litmus test'.🤪
I wonder if universities that have already capitulated to the GOP administration agreed to mandatory cluster hires of conservatives for departments found to not have the correct "view"? And can you just imagine the so-called credentials of the mandatory professors? The likes of Marjorie or Matt
This is dangerous framing. The breaking point was fascist bullying. The pretext is a lie by fascists who are actively building concentration camps and a secret police for disappearing people
What student is ever going to take a class with or research under a professor who is only there because he’s a conservative? This ideological “DEI” is doomed to failure.
Trump is the one applying an “ideology litmus test” to a private university.
Whoever wrote these fascist demands (not Trump, since there’s no all caps hysteria, misspellings + gobbledegook) should be ashamed of themselves. And any Harvard alums working for this tyrant should quit.
That's shorthand for ending tenure and end Harvard as a top choice for star professors.
Many department budgets are occupied by professors and fixed costs. Want a new professor? Wait for an old one to retire or leave for a different school. Harvard would have to get rid of professors. Lots of them.
I remember when the number one goal of conservatives was blowing up the FCC's Fairness Doctrine, the main thing holding back brain-eaters like Limbaugh and Murdoch. Guess that's over?
They're rolling this initiative to all right wing media outlets too, right? RIGHT??
The disinterested pursuit of knowledge for its own sake is an inherently progressive enterprise. Conservatives are greedy troglodytes who care about nothing but money and power. Of course they don't pursue careers in academia.
Also the idea that 'conservative' views will be force-fed into academia would never ever end well for academia. "Science says this, but my Bible says that, my Bible wins! Make Polio Great Again!"
The new regime read the leninist playbook : install political commissar in every organistion.
With tariffs US has already switched to a state managed economy.
Communism never die. 🤡
Maybe there is no left or right, just intellectually curious or bigoted. Most of the inquisitive lean left, even experts know they know little. Most of the bigots instead suffer Dunning-Kruger syndrome, knowing enough to boast but seeing peer review as personal attacks. Dogma and schools don't mix.
This requirement is internally contradictory. How can they abolish anything that functions as an ideological litmus test, and then subsequently hire a bunch of people specifically to balance the ideology of their departments?
"viewpoint diversity" is just a bullshit screen for "conservative hacks." Why would a climate science program, for example, want to hire an anti-science climate denier to provide "diversity?" Some things are just *wrong*, it's not a matter of ideology.
All the conservative billionaires are tired of personally floating these ideological half-wits so they are trying to force the universities to pay for their mental drivel.
“harvard must abolish all criteria … that function as ideological litmus tests” and then they must hire people that pass stephen miller’s ideological litmus test.
"activist judges" = rulings I don't like
"wasteful spending" = spending on programs I don't like
"ideological litmus test" = accepting people whose ideas I don't like
Nazis did exactly this in 1930’s Germany. Replaced university staff with true believers. In the end, medical schools deemed the gassing of the disabled to be treatments. “Feeders undeserving of life” Many of these children could read and write. Gas chambers were part of the hospital complex.

The very vagueness of that phrase is chilling.
Something Cultural Revolution about it.
I'm not sure they would get the irony, though...

Frog marched anti-diversity is more like it.
Also, viewpoints belong in opinion columns & not treated as facts.
