Best of luck to you! Game dev is quite the journey. Excited to see what you make :)

I use ONLYOFFICE for online doc editing and Libre Office for local doc editing :)

Always a good take. Release those games!

Ah, yeah Motorolas are some of my least fav phones for lots of reasons, this just added to the list šŸ˜… You could always find a refurbished pixel 6 or 7 and trade in that phone if you want Graphene, but thatā€™s more money and effort lol

Take a look at this! Itā€™s a seal to signify no generative ai used on your game. Made by indie devs against gen ai :) www.polygon-treehouse.com/no-gen-ai-seal

Iā€™m setting up vaultwarden for a business and itā€™s not too terrible as far as self hosted software goes. I agree with you though! Proton being Swiss is a good thing, but the CEO being MAGA enthusiast might mean bad things down the line for users. But maybe not! Hard to say
comment in response to post
Yeah Proton is disappointing to say the leastā€¦ Bitwarden is good! And if you donā€™t want to rely on their cloud services you can self-host a Vaultwarden server :)
comment in response to post
Yeah, Iā€™ve been watching Protonā€™s political views and Iā€™m not liking itā€¦

Glad you enjoyed it! Brackeys is fantastic, and yeah GDScript being syntactically identical to Python in most ways was one of my big draws to it too. Itā€™s a powerful engine!

This is a great resource, thank you!

If you're in Europe there's lots of options here: european-alternatives.eu I'm also working on a Canadian tech alternative site.

Well, NextCloud has some of that functionality. Thereā€™s also a more ā€œenterpriseā€ option called ERPNext that offers way more functionality that SharePoint has. SharePoint is essentially a web portal for a file server. You can even set up a mind mapping software to achieve something similar!

Go check out my substack! I try my best to break it down into consumable tutorials and information with tons of links to guides and resources I used! I am going to start writing more now that people seem semi interested :)

Most should, but if you really need passkeys you can get a password manager like Proton Pass or Bitwarden that does and then you have them on every device :)

You are an AI art account. Cry me a river ā˜ŗļø

LineageOS is really popular, and /e/OS looks really promising too! They both use microG which is like a ā€œGoogle emulatorā€ if you will.
comment in response to post
LibreOffice, OnlyOffice, if you get NextCloud there is NextCloud Office (cloud port of LibreOffice), Apache OpenOffice, and Calligra Suite. I personally use OnlyOffice and LibreOffice together since they make a good package. OnlyOffice has cleaner interface IMO, LibreOffice has more functionality.

Proton Mail is decent but limited, Zoho is pretty good, past that is a self-hosted mail server, which is a difficult task because of spam blocking standards. Possible though! Also I recommend Mozilla Thunderbird as your client :)
comment in response to post
Thanks for the heads up! Are you using their Fairphone OS or /e/OS? Also I heard the FP5 is more advancedā€¦ not sure if thatā€™s applies to the update issue, but good to know that the hardware is decent!
comment in response to post
Yeah, Iā€™m thinking of getting a phone with Ubuntu Touch, especially since itā€™ll be mostly compatible with Zorin. My only thing is the lack of community. Like itā€™s there, but not to the extent of Android, especially with G-free OSs like Graphene. Iā€™ll look into the other ones you mentioned! Thanks!

Also, I post on substack occasionally with detailed tutorials and/or explanations of open source software with lots of resources linked at the bottom of where I get my information. Might find some useful stuff in there, if you want to check it out! njcstudios.substack.com

You can choose another Linux distro as well, there are thousands! There are other Android OSs if you donā€™t have a pixel, like Lineage, /e/OS, Calyx, and Ubuntu Touch! Here is a great resource for finding FOSS alternatives for other proprietary software (Adobe, AutoDesk, etc): Linuxlinks.com

Yeah 5 years might be pushing it šŸ˜… but you never know!

I didnā€™t even know about ubports! Which is dumb since theyā€™ve been on it since 2017ā€¦ man Iā€™m outdated with this project. Thank you for this! Might change what phone I go with nowā€¦.
comment in response to post
Oh dope, thank you!
comment in response to post
Thatā€™s a sweet package! I really like Ubuntu and Iā€™ve always wanted to get Ubuntu Touch but the project seems to have gone somewhat stale recently.

Yeah, when it comes to social media itā€™s a lot more tricky. I know AT is domain based, so you can use your own domain and I think that gives you even more control. I need to do more research into it though. I have a domain I would like to useā€¦
comment in response to post
Honestly that is a really good phone. There may be some other OS that is compatible with it for a more sandboxed approach like Graphene soon enough!
comment in response to post
I have seen fair phone! I might look into them more seriously before I purchase my next phone. Although I really like the Pixelā€™s design and hardware and Grapheneā€¦ but fairphoneā€™s /e/OS looks really promisingā€¦
comment in response to post
Well, I think AT allows you to bring your data with you to other platforms then you can just deactivate your Bluesky account. At least thatā€™s how I have understood it. Itā€™s an ā€œopen-sourceā€ social media networking protocol in nature.

grapheneos.org zorin.com - my linux of choice :) nextcloud.com And for in-depth tutorials there are plenty of really good channels on YouTube to help and explain things really well! Best of luck to you!
comment in response to post
What phone model are you using?
comment in response to post
When I refer to data Iā€™m more talking files and banking info. Nextcloud is self-hosted and doesnā€™t relay information to the company, Graphene is Google-free, Linux requires no cloud/online account to use. On Bluesky, AT protocol lets you remain in control of your account and data as well.
comment in response to post
There are other options for Samsung! Graphene is a pixel specific project, but other projects exist like LineageOS, Ubuntu Touch (older project), and CalyxOS that support Samsung devices.
comment in response to post
Let me know what you think of Graphene when you make the switch! Android is still open source enough you can find other non-Google OSs built on it :)
comment in response to post
Yes! My company pays for Google, but nothing Microsoft so I switched my work laptop to Linux. Being in IT also makes that a much more reasonable switch lol. But I whole heartedly agree with you!!! šŸ˜Š
comment in response to post
I agree! I wish I had more knowledge of OS architecture on mobile to be any help. Game dev is my expertise lol

We help the poorest by taking down the billionaires. Corruption will never go away even if we turn back the clock to a time before modern times to fight the corruption at some of the biggest sources. But we can continue to fight it and work together toward a better world.
comment in response to post
Yeah, fucking insane. I love it!
comment in response to post
I remember this. Another reason why open source is best. We have people constantly looking at it and able to see flaws and make changes to fix those flaws without the wait on a company to find the flaw and make the change on their own leisure.
