"...a 36-point questionnaire was sent directly to Australians who conduct joint research with US partners in fields as diverse as foreign aid, medicine, vaccines and defence." It includes a question about Confucius Institutes. www.afr.com/politics/fed...

Doesn’t matter what The Age says; the fact is it’s taken money to publish hate speech

Read this summary of actions by the Trump administration just this week and tell me what is going on is not civilisation-threatening. It’s pure evil. open.substack.com/pub/heatherc...

A good piece worth reading about how the online world shapes politics that is also applicable to #auspol

The longer we remain captive to the fruitless AUKUS deal, the longer we spend not doing other things that will actually help secure Australia. Remember, we only get the submarines if the US President agrees that they don't need them. Here's how that's going ⤵️

Seems Labor has retained #Fremantle after moving to 342 ahead on more absents. #wavotes

Wonder what he'll learn. Mouth open, ears shut do not work well there.

India plans to add 114 new multirole fighters to airforce in five years. Maybe. And more or less double the number of fighter squadrons to 60. Delhi needs to get a hurry on if any of this is going to happen. economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence...

Ppl under 35 have organised their school work, study, social lives and often careers around remote-working tools for a very long time. Dutton’s policy landing with young ppl like a proposal to abolish email in favour of a return to the fax machine. Embarrassing, out of touch, stressful to consider…

No. It would be self defeating. Have to respond in other ways.

America’s most sycophantic fan, its most loyal and automatic friend in every conflict, is not any longer really an ally. If Canada isn’t, how could Australia be? @waterfordjack #auspol

All of these attacks were used by politicians on both sides and basically every media outlet to justify attacks on pro-Palestinian campaigners, pass repressive new laws and criminalise the anti-genocide movement. Now it’s revealed they were all orchestrated by one criminal syndicate

Some people in SA would say 'Victoria'.

Been a working day at universities for years--found about it the hard way when I joined Monash as a tutor in 1965.

With all this "when will the PM call the election talk" that happens literally for half the government's term, EVERY TERM... ...I really do think federal politics needs to follow the states and just have a fixed election date every four (not three) years! It's just such a waste of air. #AusPol

Making Europe's Defence Industry Great Again. And undermining US firms. newsukraine.rbc.ua/news/us-part...

THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at Stanford University have developed a dual-antibody treatment that remains effective against ALL SARS-CoV-2 variants by targeting a less-mutable part of the virus. This breakthrough could lead to longer-lasting therapies that OUTPACE viral evolution. 🧪🧵⬇️

To give Russia a momentary advantage in the war on Ukraine, Trump has destroyed the basis of the Five Eyes deal (he already wanted Canada out). Any agreement or international org where US plays a central role is now a zombie (NATO, G7, AUKUS, ANZUS etc). www.thelondoneconomi...

Still over 29 degrees in Adelaide. Lucky it's not hotter there. Sometimes used to have to sleep on the lawn when we lived there.

I’m quoted on the front page of the Observer today. They are looking back at the effects of the pandemic five years on. I say that it is primarily a story of inequalities. The poorest, disabled, young people have suffered the fallout, but this is easy to overlook www.theguardian.com/world/2025/m...

Thank you!! Not such a good producer today as I pushed a wrong button towards the end. Anyway - moving on. We’ll be back next Sunday - where I’ll probably push wrong buttons again - but the guests & the discussions will be great! 🙌🙌 #SundayShot #auspol

Canada has existential choices to make in the Trump era. It had become complacent about its many virtues, and has had a sharp awakening, writes Michael Ignatieff. www.prospectmagazine...

Yes.

The public really needs to understand this. Every university system in the world rests on public funding, there has never been an alternative model at any time in history. We have universities for literally the same reason that we have roads and armies.

“The political psychology of Australia has always been that America will come to our aid. The real question now is: why would we want the Americans?” @andrewjfowler.bsky.social #SundayShot #auspol

Here we go...Australia needs nuclear weapons, says opinion writer in major newspaper. This is likely to get traction, rightly or wrongly. Worth remembering that nukes can't defend against grey zone threats or political warfare, as the US has found out multiple times. www.afr.com/markets/debt...

New morning, no cyclone, didn't even touch the mainland. The dog was right - meet Leo, the new head of BOM forecasting

Being a historian, people ask me if I think the US is living through Germany 1933. I answer no, analogies are always imperfect but to me it feels more like Russia 1999: a blatant theft of state assets and liberals in a fugue state, refusing to believe the arc of progress is bending against them.

Zelensky's take-down of Brian Glenn over the suit question is underrated. "Maybe I'll get one after the war. Better than yours. Maybe cheaper." Low-key told the man he overpaid for a cheap suit. Don't argue with comedians. They'll destroy you.
