Word of the day is ‘huff-snuff’ (16th century): a hectoring bully or braggart.

I wrote this for @bjsociology.bsky.social on organising in universities & the work we all need to do to defend & remake the university. It's a reflection on being heavily involved in UCU with practical tips on what everyone can do, esp. now with redundancies. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Strike action tomorrow at Brunel University 📢 With over 400 job on the line we must stop the cuts. Our members refuse to pay the price for the financial failings of senior management 👇

A HUNDRED AND FORTY MILLION??? A? HUNDRED? AND? FORTY? MILLION???? what?

So, we promised people posts about how we've ended up in the mess we're currently in. Before we can do that, though, we should clear something up. You may recall this leaflet form a week ago, summarising the situation. The employer has written to us, taking exception to three of the claims we made.

Financial mismanagement. STV reported on our strike yesterday. At the 9 minute mark, the Interim Principal owns up to financial mismanagement at the University of Dundee. Where is the accountability? player.stv.tv/episode/4pak...

Lobbying led UK universities to adopt US-style security during Gaza protests, emails reveal - www.theguardian.com/education/20... "UK students faced excessive disciplinary measures as a result of heavy-handed strategy, reports claim"

Read this: it really captures the reality of mass redundancies in the university sector, which will only snowball from here. voice.cymru/two-weeks-in...

The @welshgovernment.bsky.social have announced £19 million to support the higher education sector. @welshlabour.bsky.social have listened & stepped up to support higher education 👏 Now it's time for the UK govt to follow Wales' lead 👇

Truly a "feminist hero" and a "feminist champion" as The Times and the Sunday Times described Donald Trump.

This is fine 🔥🔥🔥

And then we were 89... Any time you want to do something, Labour, any time. 10,300 job losses in 2024; how many more in 2025? qmucu.org/qmul-transfo...

Why are staff at the University of Dundee going on strike? A fantastic article from Professor Angela Daly @nidhalaigh.bsky.social in today’s Courier @thecourier.co.uk Save jobs. #SaveDundeeUni www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/opinion/5...

Cardiff’s bosses will be proud to see we’re topping at least one league table since their brutal & unnecessary cuts. We are #1 in the Tab’s table of UK universities most likely to go on strike this year. Cardiff University: World leading in mistreating their staff. thetab.com/2025/02/11/t...

A short clip from an excellent interview with Cardiff UCU rep Athanasios Hassoulas covering the massive support staff have got from students, as well as the likelihood of industrial action in defence of our jobs and our livelihoods. ✊👏 youtu.be/o7i37B7OwQQ?...

Reform are panicking about people pointing out that they want to replace the NHS. So please don't share this clip of Nigel Farage saying he'd rather healthcare was done through insurance companies.

It's been a busy could of weeks in higher education, and first up is my long read for @timeshighered.bsky.social into universities that are establishing subsidiary firms to avoid paying TPS contributions #academicbluesky 📰🗞️ www.timeshighereducation.com/depth/are-we...

What can students do to support their lecturers? They can write to the VC & ask “why are you saying job cuts are necessary when you aren’t cutting your £290,000 pay?” “Why are you, Uni exec board, taking a combined pay packet of £2.3m when you’re putting more than 400 staff out of work?” @ucu.org.uk

Very hard to imagine any social science that would not be flagged by NSF's new censorship regime

So now we have it. Rachel Reeves's claim that a third runway at Heathrow Airport would boost economic growth comes from a report commissioned by .... Heathrow Airport. Instead of acting in the national interest, she's channelling corporate lobbyists. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

'The draft budget, on which the National Assembly was due to vote on 3 February, involves a €630 million reduction in higher education and research funding, with a €100 million cut to the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and €8 million pulled from financial support for students'. 1/3

'The university said this week that 342 staff had left since the voluntary exit scheme was introduced in September 2023. It remains open for professional services staff whose work hasn’t been reviewed yet. Savings are also being made by not filling vacant posts.'

'Across 103 universities to have posted financial accounts so far this year with relevant figures, £210 million was spent on compensation for loss of office last year. This was a 67 per cent increase on...2022-23. The severance payments...affected about 10,300 employees'. 1/4

[reposted] The storm has broken at Cardiff University. Solidarity to everyone who is going to be affected by leaving the university, or by remaining as part of a substantially weakened workforce. Please join a union.

Been writing press releases & doing media interviews for my branch of UCU today. A very grim, dark, emotional day at Cardiff University. 400 jobs to go. Whole departments (including modern languages, nursing, music, religion, ancient history) to be axed. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Excited to announce the 3rd run of our PhD conference for doctoral students researching in areas of criminology and criminal justice! We welcome submissions from PhDs at any stage of their degree, from the UK and abroad.

📈Lots of charts doing rounds re market jitters in the UK. Here's one I find quite helpful 👇 It's the cost of insuring UK debt against default. Two things to note: 1. People ARE more concerned. The CDS spread HAS jumped up recently. 2. It's nothing like what happened in 2022.

A: what on earth did Dundee management do? They've gone into catastrophe superfast? (they weren't 1 of the 3 close to bankruptcy) B: a RELIEF to see the press acknowledge the destruction of PGR teaching. Rife across the sector &wideranging consequences, but not as eye-catching as redundancies #UKHE

Hilarious but also depressing/scary. So clear the nonsense these people are being fed by the newspaper they read.

Strike ballot at Newcastle University 🚨 £35m of cuts have left our members suffering. Staff should not pay the price for management’s financial mismanagement.

It's almost impossible to believe he exists. It's as if we took everything that was bad about grifters, racists and fascists, scraped it up off the floor, wrapped it all up in an old scraggy fag end, and then taught it to make noises with its face.

To sue for defamation, Liz Truss has to show "serious harm" (section 1 of the Defamation Act). The more you retweet this the easier it will be for her to show serious harm leaving her nowhere to hide when she doesn't. You know what to do!
