Been devouring this the last few weeks and I cannot believe how essential it feels for understanding our current moment

It’s a tale as old as time.
I think my biggest frustration is headlines and “journalism” that claims to be controversial by delivering “truth bombs” but is actually totally lazy and really punching down. Your episodes on pundits…what a fucking sweet gig they have.
Maybe, just maybe, we've all been conditioned...✌🏻
6. also the patriarchy likes to remind you how ‘lucky’ you are to SAHM when you really want to go back.
7. When you do go back you are vilified as selfish.
1. Isolating.
2. No career dev or stimulation
3. With young babies having a routine is tough and can feel disheartening if you are task driven
4. Sleep deprivation
5. Sleep deprivation
This narrative was almost entirely created by media and political institutions controlled by men.
And it's not even true.
Dagnabbit WHERE IS MY EDIT BUTTON!
What's sad is that (eventually) the majority of women were also pushing that narrative. Women didn't want to be associated with "feminists."
P.S. that's my personal experience.
"they were right to do it back then, in the past, where their victories are things i've grown up with and accepted as normal. but they're wrong to do it now! they've gone too far!"
It was always those damn activists' fault.

It has haunted me since.
Time for another read.
Add the cultural context of white fright from no longer being the majority in the US and the decline in Christian membership, and a lot of triggers are revealed.
Yeah. We’ve always know.

It was maddening!
Today’s “I’m not a feminist but”. Is “I know it’s not all men but”
I’m done with it personally. I’m sick of the tone police rolling up to quash us when we ask them to stop killing us.
Thinking that’s why older women can be grumpy 😂. We’re just out of fucks
Men created these restrictions for a sole purpose: to guarantee sexual access to women.
The child rearing, housekeeping, emotional labor are secondary.
title needs some workshopping
Bc we live it. Each time there is a debate or change, incels come out of the woodwork to panic about the fact if women have true equality, they’ll have to be better humans bc they can’t enslave us.
Thx for the rec❤️
Are there other good books about this?
That the oppressed class is…
Women’s studies? Did it prepare you for today, and/or was there anything it was completely off with?
*and in particular women of color
you know, that one time we tried to care about civil rights, before we gave up. :/
a handful of women appointed to the top of our incredibly corrupt justice system just isn't that impressive.
now it feels like the thing people point to when they want to claim homophobia is over. 😂
Why: response against SCOTUS decisions favoring minority, women and working class.
And founded not by lonely conservative students, but by GOP.
Members represent <5% of licensed US attorneys yet hold 2/3 majority
How?
I’m pretty sure the world would stop working when we stop working. I’d watch this movie.
I read it in university in the 90s.
It deserves a re-read.
We have a copy at the bookstore, i think.
I may have to add it on Libby cause it sure feels that way online at least if not in life
My favourite Nutso-Wolf moment was her rhapsodizing about the peaceful, 70s vibe of Belfast because no 5G. 🤦 https://www.politico.eu/article/warm-welcome-back-dark-days-1970s/
Her 2016 book isn't crazy pants.
What did you mean?
It was potentially crushing. No credit card without a man, low expectations etc. forget about female billionaires. Keep moving ahead. Steady. That will come. You are so much more far along than you think you are historically.
And they should be asking why women had to drop out once married/kids!
I quite enjoyed her book The Fever Dream as well, which looks at the cultural narratives we constructed about terrorism post 9/11
Backlash and Stiffed should be HS reading for all students but, hoo, that's never going to happen. :(

Relatedly, learning that 1970s horror film was all sublimated anxiety about women entering the workforce was fascinating.
& scholarship via Title 9. Young women r beating men by any metric. Grad rates in higher ed, adulting etc. Cue up incels. Imagine what women could have achieved thru history on a level playing field based on the last 50 years!
Will reread for sure.
I’m interested in the roots of misogyny & how men convinced women we deserved it. (Beyond Adam & Eve.) Anything about that?

The former shows up when I search "terror dream" on Storygraph, the latter shows up on Amazon and also has a StoryGraph entry of different length, I'm confused.
And it was. Even moreso than I expected.
Here's to understanding better.
Thanks.
Stiffed: The Betrayal of the American Man (1999) also speaks to today.
When I wrote Reality Bites Back in 2010, my goal was to continue/update Faludi's media analysis for a new genre 19yrs later.
And by the way - the backlash also spawned the “third wave feminism” backlash to feminism
That was an actual thing a man said to me not two weeks ago.
