Read this to my husband, an avowed Heathcliff supporter, and got a 10 minute monologue about how wrong it is. I'm now exhausted. Wishing you better skies, Tim Onion. Go in peace.
Garfield is the popcorn fart of animated cats. Light airy and lacking substance. Heathcliff has the swagger of a 1930 jazz musician. Put some respect on his name!
I posit that Heathcliff is to Garfield as Hydrox were to Oreos, iykyk.
Though Jim Davis’ comic strip was called “Jon” for the first year, so I doubt he was deliberately imitating Heathcliff.🤔
Garfield started to stagnate by his third year. Heathcliff has undergone such radical transformations that Classic Heathcliff, Animated Heathcliff, and Postmodern Heathcliff should almost be discussed as completely different characters.
you realize that hydrox was first and that oreo is the imitator? heathcliff was first too. garfield is a copy cat. also heathcliff is a cat of the people.
OMG! I thought you meant Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights and thought I was forgetting some Gothic character named 'Garfield'. In my defense, I don't have kids, don't see movies and don't follow pop culture.
Except Heathcliff predates Garfield by several years. Heathcliff came out in 1973 and Garfield in 76 as Jon then when syndicated in 77 came out as Garfield.

Heathcliff: The frozen section take-home Olive Garden lasagna of comic cats.

I'm still trying to work out the meaning of THAT version...
And yes, even our cartoons in the late 19hondos were sexualized

Healthcliff: seemed to show signs of libido. Ran around like a gangster tomcat.

I mean at this point, Garfield is also "Temu Garfield" but still...
Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats are from the hood
