His student visa was suddenly revoked but he wasn’t notified—“they don’t want ICE to lose the advantage of surprise” (!!!)—and four days later he was arrested at the hospital where he works.

It's telling that they like to target people who are easiest to catch. At their jobs, reporting for immigration hearings, picking up their kids at school.
Those aren't the places you'd pick up a typical gang member.
Those are the places you pick up people who are just going about life.
His "crime" was overstaying his student visa, which had been revoked without notice. Shouldn't the "overstaying his visa" charge be predicated on his knowing the visa was revoked? (Shouting into the void, I know)
But then left the country. He came _back_ to Palo Alto ostensibly for a grad program at Stanford but never enrolled in classes. He was an illegal immigrant.
Reading the article, my bet is that ICE is just doing a straight trawl for anyone on a long-term visa who's had any arrest record, and he had one arrest for being at a protest and a misdemeanor conviction for graffiti. Penny-ante shit that's pure deadweight loss to deport him over, but here we are.
He was protesting a Black Lives type of incident in Minnesota.
he spray painted a bridge overhead and some delivery trucks.
It was NOT a felony and it was a few years ago. So now he is being deported.
ICE doesn’t just want migrants to leave. ICE wants to grab them, humiliate them and frogmarch them out of the country themselves, preferably in the most performatively abusive manner possible.
The immigration story here is critical, but I can't overstate how much pulling immigrant healthcare workers out of the US is going to destroy rural hospitals that can't recruit Americans to remote areas. Republicans continue to show they desperately want their constituents dead
That won't matter, either. There was a dude recently who was held hostage by ICE even though he was a citizen with a birth certificate. All he did was drive into Florida from Georgia for work.
if i was a visa holder and saw that it was revoked, i wouldn’t go to work or home. if it wasn’t revoke, i want proof with me. anything is possible in fascist regime, but give yourself the best chance. if any one in your family speaks with an accent, get a passport and carry it with you.
Yeah, I mean it's worth it to give yourself the best chance, I'm just saying that these ICE fucks don't gaf if you're a citizen, legal, or not, and it's not the fault of anyone who gets grabbed; they still don't deserve this. The point is really just that we need to stop the fascism.
for sure, but until fascism is banished to the dustbin of history yet again, one of the way we fight is to find ways the most vulnerable can protect themselves while the work to vanquish this insanity is being done. pretending we don’t live in a fascist state is a risk.
This is shameful. I will endlessly be full of rage over bullshit like this. I hope this man, who I’d be happy to have as a neighbor, gets justice in this corrupt system.
Yes. My spouse’s student—a model student who’s just a few weeks shy of earning her undergraduate degree—received a threatening letter and returned to China a couple of weeks ago. At least she can complete her degree remotely. But it’s disruptive, it’s cruel, and it’s tragic.
God, I hope we get past this regime. What a joy it will be to exchange "What did the Orange One do today" to daily updates on trials for not only him but the complicit officials and agents, and the "order followers."
There’s not a lot there in the article, other than the statement from the MNA stating that they don’t support nurses becoming involved in ICE enforcement—so what happened? From my reading, it sounds like someone sent him down to the basement knowing that he was about to be detained. Which, grrr 😡.
Yeah, I’m really curious about this. The MNA statement almost sounds like it was directed at nurses. Like as a reminder that they shouldn’t collaborate with ICE. 😟
I keep thinking about how all the rural hospitals rely on immigrant workers… and they just gave him up. How are hospitals going to work without immigrants?
Growing up, he had been inspired by the American ideal of freedom of speech — and in 2021 he joined a demonstration protesting police violence. That’s why they’re targeting him now.

Seriously though, this is appalling
@smith.senate.gov and @amyklobuchar.com it would be nice to see you following in Van Hollen's footsteps too, though I have my doubts
Them, now: ha we've revoked your visa so now you're here illegally, but it's a big secret.
Then: I know nothing about & have nothing to do w/ Project 2025
Now: Ha, suckers! Project 2025 is almost halfway complete & it's our playbook!

"They should come here legally!" they say.
It's as if they're revoking visas just to fill a quota.
Gleeful pieces of shit.
(Actually, Republicans want us all dead, but at least the ones who voted for them actually deserve the consequences of their actions…)
Shameful.
Nowadays being a spineless fuck is all we have between us and full blown anarchy.
