i used to work for a small business that absolutely relied on certain hardware that came from china. however, we didn't use usps for it. it all came in through ups for us. i'm assuming most businesses will be using ups as well, as long as they don't make the same move.
Aaah. Quite possibly. I havenβt heard though, and I wonder about the tariffs they might now face do prices could go up and not be as competitive anyway. But I donβt know how it all works!
Why Hong Kong! So many people had to flee out of there when China took over! ALL the protesters that weren't put in jail got out. This is cruel. I don't care about Temu. I don't shop Chinese products because I have family in China who have suffered under Xi. But HONG KONG has done nothing wrong.
This is going to kill entire industries if it goes on for any length of time. Iβm a bit K-Beauty fan and one of the biggest U.S. online retailers has its main warehouse in Hong Kong. Itβs so goddamn ridiculous
It will be when we get to it tomorrow. It will be posted either tomorrow afternoon or it will be posted on Thursday.
It takes us a bit to get those things on the website
It was tricky to find, but I was able to navigate to the link from the main https://USPS.com webpage. Go to About > Newsroom > Service Alerts > International and then it's below the big box at the top of the page.
I make jewelry as a side gig and 90% of my supplies come from China, or the place I buy them from gets them from China. Most of it I buy direct from vendors in China and they send it as small parcel via USPS. So this essentially puts me out of business as I run out of things.
I am in Canada..love Temu cute stuff for gardening..but now I wonder if this will affect shipments to Canada too as I notice all my parcels go to US first
Trump backed down per the updated WP article above
"The U.S. Postal Service on Wednesday abruptly reversed its decision to block inbound package shipments from China and Hong Kong just hours after implementing the suspension."
But it might not impact Shein and Temu, or Amazon that much as, according to his posts on X, they use a direct injection style of shipment (think shipping containers and what FedEx and DHL,
Could be 70% of items (probably small consumer goods?)
made in China end up on Amazon, 30% donβt. Likely a bad description for the graph as these things usually have. I teach stats and have discussions with students trying to decipher graphs like this one.
He's chicken when something is unpopular with his base.
Shipping from China is cheap due to the Universal Postal Union (UPU) which categorizes countries based on their development level. "Developing" countries like China receive lower rates. USPS massively subsidizes shipping for Chinese exporters.
They do, but if they donβt accept shipments from China, it doesnβt matter if itβs parcels in a container, or airfreight. They can store the parcels & only release if recipient pays tariffs or whatever.
They hold back trucks that might contain parcels from China. However, they peddled back for now.
The TikTokers were luckily euthanized a couple weeks ago because the fast fashion cohort are going to be tortured to death by the loss of Shein and Trump RIP πͺ¦
That's nice at least. Also it doesn't sound like they are the manufacturing business if they are getting parcels from China, it sounds like they are middlemen.
What an absolutely insane thing to say about quite literally any business which uses uses powdered abrasives, stepper motors, lab quartz, engineering epoxies, plastic in any form, etc. etc.
Pretty simple. When you mindlessly introduce a tariff without warning the the tariff has to be collected when products arrive. Every person who has an inbound parcel will have to show up and pay the tariff before collecting. Maybe MAGA will finally figure out who pays tariffs now.
Any mailed items coming from China or Hong Kong now have a Tax-Tariff that needs to be paid upon entry to the US. There is no one to pay it upon entry at US so China & HK can keep the package. Postal service not paying for it.
"The U.S. Postal Service on Wednesday abruptly reversed its decision to block inbound package shipments from China and Hong Kong just hours after implementing the suspension."
No this is Trump's payback for the Bezos bribes. Curbing purchase directly from China by individual consumers. Now you have to buy the same Chinese products only through retailers like Amazon.
βde minimisβ means something that is too small or insignificant to be considered. The rule, passed by Congress in the 1930s and amended over the past few decades, allows items being shipped or brought into the United States that are worth less than $800 to circumvent import taxes. Trump axed it!

I'm retired, so I'm out of the Postal loop, but I guarantee this came from DeJoy/Trump. It never would have happened before those two. Thanks for leaving DeJoy in power, Biden.
Why, yes! I fucking do know about the USPS Board of Governors. I'm a retired postal worker with 35 years of service. Do YOU know that Biden appointed 2 members of that board and chose NOT to appoint people who would remove Trump's buddy DeJoy?
No, I think he DID appoint them with that intent, but THEY did not follow through. P.S.- Biden also enacted the Postal Reformation Act to kneecap DeJoy. You remember that, right?
And poor Biden got hood-winked by his own appointees? Getting rid of DeJoy should have been his primary condition for appointment. It obviously wasn't.
The Postal Reform Act did roll-back the mandate from the 2006 Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act that forced the USPS to prepay %100 of employee health benefits 75 years into the future. That's good. I don't see that it slowed DeJoy down, he certainly isn't knee-capped.
Wrong. Biden appointed 2 members of the USPS Board of Governors during his term. Those appointments should have given him the majority on the board, but he chose 2 people who were perfectly fine with DeJoys mismanagement/destruction of the USPS.
Why keep coming here with lame defense of Biden as regards the USPS? I worked there for 35 years. I was there when DeJoy (who has many conflicts with UPS and Fed Ex) purposefully slowed down mail processing and delivery. Maintenance was required to remove sorting machines that we used every tour.
No. The US Senate, usually by voice vote, is tasked with confirming a president's nominees for the Postal Board of Governors. They have no involvement with the replacement of a Postmaster General as voted by the Governors. Why have a Board at all if the Senate makes all the decisions?
The retaliatory tariffs put on American goods.

Fun, considering 90% or more base compounds for meds and meds and anything plastic for healthcare come from china, oh well Im sure people can catch some leeches to do blood lettings
Everything they're doing, like taking over servers with classified info and firing all the workers, is illegal. But they know it's up to the Republican controlled Congress to do anything. And they won't. Their whole MO right now is "you can't do anything about it, so we'll do whatever we want."
high probability Trump does not know the difference between mainland China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan for that matter. The way he's talked about it in the past I am 100% certain he neither knows nor cares that Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the US, or what that means
A whole grown ass man, with money, power, everything in the world at his disposal and yet so fking stupid because he can't be bothered. It comes down to being a lazy and no one in his childhood gave enough shit about him to slap the shit out of him
Presumably you will be contacted by USPS to fill in the tariff declaration and pay the tariff before the parcel is delivered. Of course with all the employment cut backs it might take months for USPS to get to you.
Walmart and other companies have import agents to complete the paperwork and pay the tariffs. Individuals don't so they need to assess the contents of each parcel and charge the individual before delivery. Maybe MAGA will finally work out who pays tariffs now.
well cant they just use DHL or UPS or Fedex which also kinda feeds their stocks . . . it would be interesting to have DHL have a little comeback in the united states
Closing borders, stopping Chinese mail, declaring cartels terrorist organizations. Junkies might be the Americans most strongly opposed to Donald Trump.
I may have discovered a loophole for this. Companies like AliExpress have an option where packages go to them from the seller. Ali ships them on their planes to their clearing center in the US. Chucks all your packages in a bag and slaps a US shipping label on it. That MIGHT subvert this.
Trump backed down, it's in the updated WP article Bogage linked to
"The U.S. Postal Service on Wednesday abruptly reversed its decision to block inbound package shipments from China and Hong Kong just hours after implementing the suspension."
Temu works with a mix of local and international carriers like USPS and FedEx. This "edict" only covers USPS. Further, I am sure that other current and future carriers can and will step in to fill the gap.
Iβve just been to the USPS About page, & I canβt find that image/data anywhere. Could it be regional? Iβm in the Midwest. Here the main page now. Tuesday night at 9:15p EST.
Gosh. This might actually get some eBay folks upset π
[I've been a seller/buyer there for many years; ICYDK there are lots of items that ship from China -- this oughta be quite the monkey wrench]
any individual orders from china-based companies - thereβs a fair number of toys and hobbyist electronics you can buy direct from china that get shipped as individual parcels. things like temu and shein orders as well potentially. container ship orders would be more bulk buying vs parcels
Try DHL. Also look into FedEx and UPS. Cargo shipping is an option too, just takes longer to get to you and you most likely need a broker to manage the arrival at port/customs. (Been a long time since I received items from ships so not sure on the exact process now.)
Not sure if this is going to impact UPS/FedEx, but it might be a short term solution. Although, it might become pretty expensive if they start getting overwhelmed with packages. And nothing to say it still won't get held up at ports.
Loop hole? Know it was meant to protect the little guy. You know everyday people buying stuff worth $800 or lower..... But you know The Trump Oligarchy wants a FLOW UP economy where we get sucked dry of every dollar.

Plenty of workarounds, but they will cost $ to implement.

Over that whole time, not all of the stuff i buy for pennies on the dollar has been delivered by the USPS.
Recently, very little of it has had any USPS exposure.
Is Trump and cronies doing this to any of his donors?

Stay tuned for hourly changes in this administration's "policies"
