Contacted a bank to cancel a credit card today and when they were asking me why to try to get me to change my mind I realized I could just tell them it was a secret 🙃

I had a cc company that were making demands I felt were unreasonable after having the account for ages and always being in good standing. I canceled the card. No loss. They asked why I told them I because I can.
I too recently had to deal with a bank trying to beg me not to close my account. They stopped when I explained that the reason was tRump gutting the FDIC and that I no longer trusted them.
I just repeat “I would like you to cancel my account or transfer me to someone who can” until it’s done. One company (alarm system) took five transfers but it got done.
I feel rude when I use it and I hate being rude to costumer service, but I know they’re going to try to convince me to keep whatever service or upgrade depending on what I’m calling about so I also feel I have to be a little short to get the point across that I’m here to do a certain thing only
I would tell them that I don't need to answer that question. When I switched my mobile provider, they asked how much they were charging me, and I politely declined to answer. I try not to give any information that is not absolutely necessary.
I was buying electronics once and the cashier asks me if I want the extended warranty I say "no thanks, I appreciate it". He hesitates for a second and then says "they make me ask that" 😁 Poor guy was new to the suggestive selling tactic. I felt for him but I still didn't buy the extended warranty.
When I moved from Florida to Canada I went to my bank to cancel my account. They made me st down with a NASTY scowly lady who asked me why I was closing my account. Like is was in the school principal’s office or something. (I was almost 40).
I said “I’m moving” and got an angry “we have branches everywhere” reply. I said “Oh? In Canada?” Her entire demeanor changed. “Oh how lovely blah blah blah”
For decades now I wish I had just said “because I want to”. I mean seriously, WTH?
When I called my internet provider to cancel the service (moving overseas), fully ready to pay the early breakup fee, they also said they offered service elsewhere. "Not in the U.S." — "No, but since you are moving outside our service range, you don't have to pay the fee. That's on us, not you."
💖
Of course! Mine was some underpaid service rep who had nothing to lose (or gain!) by saving me money and was just being a nice person for the sake of it.
All of which, anecdotally, seems to be contraindicated with being a banker. 😒
Nice of you!
I've worked in a therapy/rehab center from 2011 to 2022, saw so many people who were "sandwiched" between ambitious managers and customers severely burned out and/or addicted to meds and alcohol.
They'd love to cancel my accounts. They never asked me to tell them when I graduated, so they're still my old student accounts. They bank changed them to "premium customer" at some point, so now they probably don't even remember why I get the low fees.
I understand why you did that, but to be in a time where we have to be concerned someone will get fired for a customer unwilling to answer a question...just...sucks.

(Dramatic voice) Well, you know, the tariffs and all that mess. . . .
When I was diagnosed with cancer long ago, it gave me a great rationale for making all kinds of changes I'd wanted to do anyway. My doctor said he'd write me any notes I needed. 🤣

Redacted.
CSR: "Um, maybe?"
Me: "Then BECAUSE I FKING WELL SAID SO."
CSR: "eep!"
'No, trust me, I can show you how you can still bank with us. (Types zip in.) The nearest branch is over an hour away.'
'And that road is a deathtrap, give me my money.'
They never script for crazy.
also, I would really hate being a customer service rep.
I remember some years ago canceling a card & the rep was trying to make me feel really guilty. air did not endear the company to me.
