The North Carolina General Assembly’s GOP supermajority just approved a hugely corrupt power grab, seizing authority from the governor and the courts to prevent any meaningful check on legislative abuses. Authoritarian stuff. A very dark day for democracy in NC. https://amp.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/article296431214.html

GOP legislators are trying to undo voters’ decisions by stripping power from Democratic officials.
That’s the only thing that works, threaten their jobs! People have to get out of their echo chambers and start using their power!
Which is why in many States, I can think of Wisconsin as one of them, but I know there are others. When the whole state votes, like for a governor or supreme court justice, Democrats win, but for the legislature, voting by district republicans often control. Gerrymader
We need to fight the corrupt GOP in court every time they pull this fascist shit.
(Unless they’re One Of Us)
Cowards!
And “very little to do with voters”? Nope, they’ve elected a shit ton GOPers.
Screw them norms — fight dirty or cede liberty
What are they scared of???
I think WE the Sane People are on our own!
Is suing them
Excellent organization to suppport
@marcelias.bsky.social and his team are on the case.
But, I’m damned good with messaging — and I know this:
Americans love a fighter, and hate a whiner.
This is why Democrats lose.
Get dirty, be ruthless - the GOP is.
There’s some dark arts available at the national level, but you gotta actually win the votes. Why Dems willing to wield those dark arts have not won goes to many things.
The only way to beat Republicans in NC is through the federal government with anti gerrymandering laws, and they're not coming to the rescue anytime soon.
Did you not hear grievances filled Trump whining for 4 years?
Lock the doors of the statehouse
Arrest them for election interference
Who cares. Throw a goddamn punch! Throw a punch McFly!

Our Supreme Court is already R partisan. Our legislature also has control over lower court appointments & ethics boards.
There’s no one that will enforce it being unconstitutional.
This is a very consequential situation.
All of them.
Fire with fire
If there is truly nothing, lay it out. If there is a mountain of evidence, show us
We deserve to know who holds power in our country.
SB 382 shifts executive powers to the legislature, potentially violating North Carolina's constitutional separation of powers clause (Article I, Section 6). Courts may review if this oversteps legislative authority or undermines the balance of power in state governance.
SB 382 is likely to face legal challenges over concerns about consolidating legislative power, undermining voter protections, and reducing judicial and executive independence. Courts will decide if it aligns with constitutional principles or exceeds legal boundaries.
The bill limits the attorney general’s authority to challenge legislative actions, potentially violating the state constitution’s provisions for independent executive duties. This may diminish the ability to uphold the law impartially.
SB 382 reduces the ballot-curing period from 9 days to 3, which could disproportionately impact voters. Courts may review whether this violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment if it disenfranchises certain groups.
The bill requires the governor to fill judicial vacancies from lists provided by political parties. Critics argue this politicizes the judiciary, which may conflict with constitutional provisions ensuring impartial and independent judicial processes.

I believe Marc Elias is on this w/his team!
I'll head over to the local DNC office for whatever good that chat might do.

😀
This year a Wis. supreme court election moved the majority to Dem.
Gerrymanding is being undone and suddenly the super majorities are disappearing. Actual election representation should occur in two years.
And I Smiled at the good folks winning.
And remember, he wasn't evil enough for MAGA.
Well, how did I get here?!
Smiling at a fellow Wisconsonite.
Also, to have several parties. Political. And otherwise.
Authoritarian power grabs generally involve the transfer of power from the legislative to the executive branch. If anything, this is an "anti-authoritarian" measure.
Nice to see they don’t care about checks and balances only absolute power
There's also no appeal because the outcome's already advantageous to the Republican party, so there's no need for Roberts et al to get involved.
The authoritarian takeover has begun.
Only thing that will stop them at this point from gaining permanent kkkristofascist minority rule is going to end up being widespread, long-term violence.
Fiddle and intellectualize to your hearts' content, but this was always End Game.
If they want a constitutional crisis, give them one.
Where did I move FROM back in 2004?
My home state of Ohio
Where did I move TO for a job offer?
Charlotte NC
20++ years of watching this gerrymandering SHIT happen
It is only Fash "Republicans" and Fascists who destroy state democracies.
Some of those crooks freeloading off of us are absolutely despicable.
#FightFascism ✊🏼
It doesn't solve anything to sit stuff out.
In any capacity.
This is ludicrous.
I’m in nyc, totally useless, but freaking out nonetheless.
I'm focusing local & what I can do.
Must be in federal court , state court has no jurisdiction on fed and constitutional law .
Also, Texas craycray Paxton And Abbot , probably have to learn hard lesson w 3 women dying due to lack of medical assistance .
Hope civil rights att smokes the bigotry out of them!
They're Fascists and Xian Nationalists.
Ultimately, conservatism is anti-human experience.
From its very origins to push back on liberalism, it’s been toxic.
Demands a social strata that, at its core, is anti-constitutional. The entire ideology is based on power and suppression.
There are laws against treason. We don't have to turn over our military to Russian propagandist collaborators. Nor the CIA, FBI, nor DOD.
Presidential immunity.

Also, it has always been the Dems that bail them out after tearing down the economy. Reagan/Bush(daddy), baby Bush, Trump. They can't lead.
"Why do Republicans hate democracy?" she asked rhetorically. 😐
Hell, no! When they go low we kick dirt in their eyes.

and it’s just gonna get worse
The Democrats appear to be game.
They successfully won enough seats to break the super majority next session as well
It’s wild to blame NC state Dems for this when they’re the South’s most radical
The Mid Terms are right around the corner & the only way to stop MAGA's like Mark Robinson of N Carolina is to

This judicial coup needs to be called out as such!
Thank you for all you do in bringing the facts!
Let people feel their votes.
White suburbans (mostly men) had high apathy.
Rural whites (mostly men) increased support for Trump vs 2020.
Racism & misogyny decided NC—don’t be so quick to condemn the victims w/ the bigots
Gerrymandering at its finest. But yes, it could flip unless you seriously suppress voters, which they're sure to do.
Is a shorter list 🤔
# 0 😱
Can't think of anything, nothing, total blank
#RepubtardsSuck
3 House R’s voted against the bill when it passed the House. If 1 of them votes w/ Dems to sustain the veto the bill is dead.
Call R House offices. Tell them you want to respect elections.
But yes, NC citizens (any district) should be the ones calling. They represent all of us when voting on major statewide policy
Just hoping if enough NC folks call, the reps having a crisis of conscience might flip.
