I’m losing my mind on tariffs. We spent 90 years systematically dismantling protectionism (GATT, WTO, NAFTA) and a mad king exercising *extremely* dubious delegated authority just set us back a century by fiat.

If pointing out hypocrisy helped: Republicans shed thousands of crocodile tears when Obama issued 276 EOs in 8 years as a result of McConnell blocking all legislative action.
No tears were shed when Trump issued 220 EOs in 4 and over 111 numbered EOs and it hasn't even been 100 days.
Fun historical fact: Originally the 1977 "national emergency tariff law permitted Congress to slap down the President with a concurrent resolution, meaning 50% in both houses.
But in 1981 the Supreme Court ruled that was unconstitutional, meaning that now it has to be something veto-able.
History major here. Pouring one out in solidarity.
And by that I mean into another glass so I can drink it, because I'm losing my mind for...arguably pretty similar reasons (WE'VE DONE THIS BEFORE, IT BACKFIRED HORRIBLY, THIS WAS THOROUGHLY DOCUMENTED WHY ARE WE DOING IT AGAIN?!)
The latest is that they seem to have generated that whole thing with Grok with a super naive formula to "make everything even" - the LLMs even warned that it was stupid.
That also explains things like BIOT and Heard and McDonald islands.
There will be no peace in the United States for years to come. They have chosen the path of destruction even if it costs them everything. We have to do whatever we can to stop them.
WTO is powerless because multiple administrations, Republicans and Democrats, have intentionally left the WTO with empty seats and unable to act. Because the US would be held to account.
Trump is a maniac, yes, but this all is the result of years dereliction of duty by Congress and Presidents
Yeah cause progress is a passifier, you must always fight to maintain the fight for people and once won there needs to be constant protection of those rights.
Its only natural that the gaurd occasionally falls asleep. Thats why they whine over "woke" no ones afraid of the sleeping.
Don't worry, we all (other citizens of the world) feel about the same. Confused, angry, upset, and worried. Did anyone notice if Russia and North Korea were on the list? If not, why aren't more people talking about what THAT implicates?
I suppose you now have another video idea; comparing a parliamentary system of governance to that of a strong executive. even when I was a boy, I always had the impression that US Presidents seemed to be able to wield an uncomfortable amount of power
Yes, but Obama slung around the odd 25% tariff. And Biden didn't remove the tariffs he inherited from Trump, any more than he rolled back his immigration policy. Yeah, this is on another level, but it's hard to say that this is all so alien to us
The 'dubious' authority has been in place for years
It's like acting shocked when they high fived over killing 50 innocent people in Yemen to maybe get one supposed terrorist. Nothing unusual about that kind of extra judicial killing. Been doing it for decades. We just used crow about it on secure channels
Levying taxes is congress's thing.
There's a law that allows the executive to create new tariffs under specific circumstances*, but only congress can remove them.
I feel bad for anyone who actually knows US civics with the way these things get reported on.
TIL: The 1977 law originally allowed Congress to slap down the President with a concurrent resolution, just 50% votes in both houses, no presidential signature.
The Supreme Court ruled that mechanism unconstitutional in 1981, now action is veto-able.
Yes indeed that contradicts everything I know about this. Obama put a 35% tariff on tires in 2009 and removed it himself in 2012. Not congress. Why would Biden campaign on repealing Trump's tariffs? And then choose not to? Instead of ask congress?
You're not alone... this is unbelievable self inflicted, global economic carnage. Senseless waste of human and capital resources that could be better used in climate change mitigation, energy transformation, and smart expansion of AI. So much is possible...
So, and I'm sorry for the incoming, conspiratorial rant but...I don't think the tariffs, the cuts to services, the " fraud" being found or any of this admins seemingly ridiculous and damaging actions are actually meant to do what they say they are intended to do. The purpose is quick, extreme...🧵1/
2/ and wide reaching enragement. They aren't trying to find fraud, or fix government or improve the economy, theyre trying to make as many ppl ( opponents prefferably) as angry as possible, as fast as possible, so someone breaks and does something extreme before the admin loses the rare political...
3/ power they managed to gain in the election. Once vacated seats of appointees and midterms are filled, by angry opponents, the admin loses political force. They need to " beat" that. Martial law is thier answer. Enrage the population before democratic opposition can get in a position to unseat you
4/ and work to reverse what youve done. This is why so much of what this admin has done doesnt seem to make much sense. It's not supposed to. The outrage IS the point. They NEED someone, anyone, to do something extreme in response. A democrat, a liberal leftist, a foreigner angry about rhetoric...
5/ they've even started aggravating some of thier own base. If USAID cuts and trade wars wont do it befote elections, maybe cuts to more MAGA populated veterans services and social security? How about an economy crippling round of truly absurd tariffs? Is anyone pissed off enough to gift the admin
6/ the thing theyve been begging for yet? Do we need MORE, and deeper cuts and international aggression? Courts are being a pain and elections are coming, soon. If no one does anything extreme in response soon, they'll HAVE to go to the "back up" plan...international conflict, and theyve seeded that
The wise man bowed his head solemnly and spoke: "There's actually zero difference between the Democratic and Republican parties. You imbecile. You fucking moron."
We need to speak out about Mike Johnson's move to turn the rest of CY2025 into a single "legislative day" to avoid being forced into floor votes for the types of issues like declaring a non-emergency for the economy and retake Congress' power of the purse.
Expecting every country, no matter their wealth or population, to buy as much from the US as the US (the wealthiest country EVER) buys from THEM is beyond idiotic.
IDIOTIC.
There are other suitable words, IDIOTIC is apt, because this reasoning is that of an IDIOT.
I used to make it. Was a great job. Great people. Useful skillset.
My former employer is suffering from all the tarrifs.
They lost their entire European market during the last round of Tarrifs during the first DJT regime.
.... you must have missed that part where i mentioned I used to make it and my former employer lost their entire european market due to tarrifs under the first regime.....?
I feel confident that the congress will take back that power they delegated from the executive, from when we had sane executives, the only question is..will it be in the next few days or will it be post midterms and we're all much poorer. He's damaged so much but building back better remains a hope
Maybe that gap in raw materials/minerals is being plugged with a “peace deal” in Ukraine for 50% of all mineral wealth and owning Greenland which has large underground deposits of rare earth metals and other minerals?

[stretching arms and pointing fingers as far as I can in opposite directions to indicate how close they are]

But Nazi Mike is speaker.

It's astounding, time is fleeting, madness takes control...
Its only natural that the gaurd occasionally falls asleep. Thats why they whine over "woke" no ones afraid of the sleeping.
My bet is by June
Future Translation: "I got a big bribe to let Putin screw Americans."
Also, great videos folks (or folk if this is just Devin)!

This is not just Trump.

So the law really did get worse over time.
I weep for our world's children.

#TraitorTrump is putting tariffs on Tokelau - 10% tariffs on a small island that doesn't feature in international trade.
10% on Keeling islands 593 people live on that island. They don't export to the USA
10% on Jan Mayen Islands where no humans live only polar bears
Tell me!
IDIOTIC.
There are other suitable words, IDIOTIC is apt, because this reasoning is that of an IDIOT.
I mean besides pouring a boatload of whiskey in a glass and consuming it.....
My former employer is suffering from all the tarrifs.

Personally, i prefer the Irish stuff.
We literally don't have all the raw materials in the US to make the goods we are tarriffing
So, yes, blame Trump. But blame Thune and Johnson and the spineless Republican idiots in the House and Senate.
