They’re playing “Wingspan”! We bought that a couple of years back, and gave up after hours of trying to understand the Byzantine gameplay and rules. It’s an astonishingly complex game that we couldn’t understand, even after watching YouTube tutorials.
Are you sure you aren't thinking of something else? It's listed as ages 10 and up, and my 7-year-old plays it without trouble. (I mean, he's not GOOD at it, but he understands the rules just fine.)
I'm pretty sure a reporter from The Onion must have had my house bugged, because this is how I experience every complicated board game for the first time!
I don't get the confusion. First time I was quite confused (and drunk). I got it on the second, though (when I was just a little buzzed...prime opportunity for absorbing new information).😉🥃🦅
i'll add onto this that even though its first episode aired over a decade ago n ended a while back, wil wheaton's tabletop is pretty good for learning how to play board games cuz they explain the basics and demonstrate the finer details through gameplay (that isn't even stale :>)
Don’t worry, Daniel, I have other board game “no”s,like if a friend shows up with a board game backpack, I also know in advance I will not enjoy any of those games! People love them go off, but this photo above is me 😬
I mean yeah, media literacy, but it’s more than that. Being able to both piece together the mechanics of a game and come up with a strategy in your head is more than just reading and following directions. Game manuals aren’t recipe books.
Ah, thank you. I needed to know this to finish my day. I was really wondering if 6 random people in the world, were currently enjoying the board game they had been playing for 5 hours and 59 minutes
They took a Risk. Looks like they didn't have a Cleudo. Someone had a Monopoly on the rule book. Starting all over again is going to be a tricky Operation.
My wife and I played Lost Cities wrong about 30 times. It was one of our favorite quick 2 player games. I don't think we've played it once since finding out the actual rules.
My brain does this thing where when we truly understand a rule, it thinks the game is now invalidated because it was running off false rules. And it's quite annoying. I want to focus on fun, but my brain really wants things to run properly.
I’d bet that 90% of people don’t even play monopoly correctly, and include things like “money on free parking” and IOUs that just prolong the game and make it miserable. If you actually follow the rules of Monopoly the game takes well under an hour.
Yeah. The game is designed to that one person quickly winds up with all the resources and everyone else is immiserated. People instinctively hate that so they invent rules to delay the inevitable.
Playing Monopoly correctly is super fast. It's the people who add house rules who end up in games that take hours. Rules like extra money for landing on free parking and not auctioning off unpurchased properties.
I stand in solidarity with the February 28 economic blackout. On this day, I will not spend a dime at major corporations—no gas, no fast food, no big-box retailers like Walmart, Target, or Amazon. Instead, I will support small businesses and local economies. #collectivePower

Actually works better as a video game where the rules are handled for you.
"now we have to write an article about it, don't we"
"... yes"
I mean, this is just you calling out my friend group.
It’s just a thing that happens sometimes when you play a game more complex than Monopoly.
I’ve lived this experience more than twice.
Our group plays Frosthaven and we have had the "we've been playing this part wrong" conversation on multiple occasions.
(It’s not that complex a game, really)
