Lol. One week after the Economist published this chart showing the dude can't stop tweeting in the middle of the night, Elon removes time stamps from tweets.

How much you want to bet they just removed it from the web/app frontend and the timestamps are still visible in the API calls if you view them with the traffic inspector?
You’re an engineer. Touching anything below the surface will break things and unleash demons from the depths of Tartarus, and get you fired. Your boss tells you “remove the timestamps”.
cant wait for him to be in a governmental position of power so all the nation states who dont like us and have good security chops can take advantage of that.
spacex, starlink, all tesla vehicles.
im sure it'll be fine
Uhm... this... is the most unsettling question i've seen, because for some reason this made it pop into focus that... Musk, a private citizen, owns multiple ICBMs. Just... without warheads.
Oh yeah, just a single booster plowing into a neighborhood at top acceleration would probably come off pretty close to a small nuke.
Thrust is terrifying, and the boosters can apparently hit 17,000 mph at some point in their cycle. Dunno how much of that you could bring down to the ground.
The smallest ICBM in the U.S. arsenal is on the order of 400 TJ of thermal energy.
Modern ICBMs top out at about 7 km/s on reentry. Your booster would need to weigh about 1.7M kg to have the equivalent kinetic energy, or close to the weight of a loaded container ship.

The ISS is at 250 miles, Hubble is 340 miles. Earth observation satellites are 500 miles. Tiangong is 242 miles. Bharatiya Antariksha Station will be 249-280 miles.
They’ve got ion drives, specifically Hall effect thrusters using argon fuel. First gen satellites use krypton fueled thrusters. So they’re actually somewhat maneuverable.
Time stamps are still showing up on the laptop through a web browser. But earlier Musk changes have lagged on browsers vs. phone apps. So I guess this is coming soon.
if it wasn't also destroying society I would find it hilarious that Trump bought a website, tweaked the algorithm to make people more angry, and then radicalized himself
Congress really needs to regulate Mr. Musk's business activities. "Twitter"/X is essentially Elon Musk's printing press (he is publisher) and I suppose he can go at it. But that is separate from the many ways he uses the press to grab money out of the US Treasury or get favorable regulations.
So is the site utterly useless now, or just mostly useless? I imagine people will have to stick their own timestamps on their tweets so they can be more relevant.
It's incredible. Trump's thumbscrew is mostly just unquestioned loyalty, but with Elon it's all ego. He has a deep, almost tragic need to be viewed as the ultimate genius and cannot stand anything that exposes him for the erratic weirdo he actually is.
Why make stuff up?
The timestamp format is same as it was and identical to bluesky + most other timeline apps:
< 7 day is relative time (2h, 3d, etc)
> 7 day is short, absolute date (Nov 27)

Click post and full timestamp is displayed on bottom
Okay, checked it on web, android, ios (and updated them) and all looks the same. Maybe they were bugs or maybe they misreported it to you. I don't see any evidence it was an actual change to the UI
this is why i genuinely believe elon might either OD or commit s*cide. he has a pathological, desperate need to be liked. but once trump throws him under the bus it will prob become too obvious to musk that literally nobody in this world actually likes him, they just pretend to bc of his wealth.
this will cause him to crash out and do something stupid/dangerous, hopefully only to himself. but knowing him, he might try to involve others too. "I'm going down and you're all going down with me!!!" type of situation.
of course he's insecure the defense the rich and powerful have is to become more rich and more powerful. If they ever fell from grace society would eat them alive. Not like they have any actual marketable skills or anything.
I once saw someone describe Elon Musk as, "Someone who thought 'When I'm the richest man alive everyone will have to think I'm cool.' And when that didn't happen, it broke his brain."
He wants everybody to go back to the office. It seems "back to the office" just means you drive someplace else to post on social media all day if you follow his example. (but he wants you to drive one of his cars to get there)
It is all about him. The entire medium is to serve him, the Mighty Musk, the (unrecognized) Master of the Universe, the uber-alpha impregnator extraordinaire, the greatest ever man-child bully.
It’s still available in the markup so I think it’s some other reason though I can’t think imagine what it could be. I sure hope the article didn’t hand enter screen dates and times and instead used some kind of markup or api method
Can't stand even the mildest criticism and believes "free speech" means people with wealth and power should be able to say and do anything with repercussion or response.
Elon is piñata full of a drug cocktail of uppers, downers, sidewayzers, & whoville else knows! So he’s awake all night meth-tweek-tweeting & he doesn’t want people (like his shareholders) to know about it!
Guessing a news organization who still wanted to gather such information could capture the hour by doing the same query with 24 different machines set to different time zones and seeing when they switches — this assumes they are giving the date for the viewer still.
This change basically abandons the idea of it being a place for breaking news in the future. Algo-driven feed and an inability to tell which is the most recent post? You can't do news like that.
See all the diagonal lines in the data? It looks like the fruit loop has tried to shift to a Mars Sol Schedule. I bet he has a 23 hour clock running his life.
Not that they are generating as much citable content but doesn’t that blow up standard citation formats for tweets if they no longer have time stamps? (Admittedly not that significant a concern in the grand scheme)
It probably doesn’t matter, or might be clear from context. Although I’m now thinking through situations in which it might. Who said what first? Who copied whom? Who seemed to be responding to whom (even on a different account?) But maybe not.
looks like ol' big brain doesn't realize that type of work is done through third party apps, and the tweets have metadata attached to them. I ran this search about 2 min ago:
I think Elon is missing the point that it doesn't matter when he posts anything, it is what he posts that confirms what he is (I will leave the label blank so people can pick and choose his description)
I assumed he removed timestamps to allow alt-right shitposters to post with more impunity. But it looks like Trump's Razor (“ascertain the stupidest possible scenario that can be reconciled with the available facts”) strikes again!
Elon's playing a lot of games over at the bad place. I unfollowed everybody there and originally I had an empty feed. Now I have a feed with all of the crypto etc. crap plus the people I unfollowed. Elon is trying to make it look like the people that left are still there.
The man could've had an influence on humanity that'd have been spoken about for hundreds of years. At the end of the day, he's just a pathetic and sad lunatic. The human psyche is just flawed and fragile.
As a one time American immigrant like Elon himself, watching him rant against immigration, especially of the illegal variety that he was part of, is embarrassing.
It’s so clear he thinks he’s a Special Little Boy who should get away with everything, but everyone else needs limits.
You don't gotta hand anything to them, obviously... but is this something that's in A/B testing? When I hover over the date on that site, I see the time too.
And when I visit a specific post, I see date and time as well.

can... can spacex deorbit satellites?
can they ... aim them?
its 100% kinetic.
basically like dropping a small car, or like a motorcycle on someone.

More of a risk for a deliberate Kessler Syndrome?

unless you are VERY BROAD ("within a few thousand miles") in your meaning of "aim".
satellites do not make good rod-from-god improvs.
maybe a private jet?
and also the type of behavior he’ll use to co-dictate the US. With the Sharpie weather map guy

Hooboy, really habits of highly successful Bond villains stuff.
Everybody carry on, nothing to see here!
That’s *exactly* why the timestamp is removed.
I mean... he's supposed to be a programmer... Doesn't he know that?
He just pays people and takes credit for their successes while passing off blame, the opposite of a good leader.

i’m so happy he is as miserable as he looks.
Let’s hope he crashes starlink. Beyond repair.
Everything about that tracks.
if we mock his 🤣 enough we could probably get him to remove emojis from the website completely
What a sorry silly waste of organic chemistry.

So now no one can’t see him high tweeting at 3am.
Holy god
How can you be one of the richest, if not the richest, people on the planet, and still be this much of an insecure dweeb.
Just go to counseling, bro, woulda' been cheaper than buying Twitter
Tho, he's pretty messed up, he'd need a ton of sessions, and that adds up
