Here's a question for people who have jobs with WFH but don't have kids: Do you wake up, shower, and basically start working or do you have an hour for yourself before you're supposed to log on?

I wake up around 6/630 and have an hour or 2 to myself. Sometimes I shower, sometimes I start work early. I usually shower around 10 or 11. It’s all very luxurious
Before kids? I’d log on about 6, do my urgent stuff and about half a day’s worth of production then do my morning routine stuff like shower and get breakfast around 8-8:30.
Then I’d get back on, answer IMs and emails that weren’t urgent and finish up my standard production for the day.
I aim for getting up about 30 minutes before I log on so I have time to shower and drink some coffee before I get on the computer. I SHOULD wake up earlier and work out or something but bed is just so nice.
This goes against every bit of advice ever, but the first thing I do when I wake up is check all my messages/scan my inbox, then I get up and start doing morning things, I’m aware this does not seem “wise“ but it helps me to start planning my day in the back of my head while I’m doing other things
even with a kid this is usually what I do because it level sets whether or not there's something relatively urgent I need to address or if my wife and I can split breakfast/coverage until our nanny arrives
I wake at 530 alarm or no. On WFH days I wash up, maybe start bread dough and/or a load of laundry, fill the bird feeders, then journal & coffee (outside if good weather). Log on at 730 in a fine mood.
On office days it's just a scramble to get out the door by 7 to beat traffic & find parking. 😕
I'm up about 30 minutes before I need to clock in so I can walk and feed my dogs. If I didn't have dogs, I'd probably get up 15-20 minutes before working just to make myself coffee and breakfast.
Depends on how early my meetings start. But typically gym or a long walk with the dogs. 8am (or earlier) meeting I will literally get out of bed, put a blouse on and go to my office.
i hate getting up in the morning so i stay in bed until like 20 seconds before i log on.
sometimes i sleep in and that’s right after i first wake up, sometimes i lay in bed and scroll or read for ~an hour.
i do check my work phone for emergencies shortly after i first wake up though.
My kids are grown and outta the house, so I feel like I can answer this. I wake up at 6am to feed the cats, make coffee and some breakfast, take a shower and then get dressed and log in to start working. It's pretty boring and not interesting at all.
The latter; I usually go for a run then do the morning stuff and then any time left over before logging on is either starting work early or reading the news, or Balatro time.
I worked from home for nearly five years until a few months ago. I would typically get up and get right to work after very basic functions (bathroom, letting dogs out) and work for an hour or so and then take a get dressed/coffee/breakfast. My day went better for me when I jumped right in.
I take a time for myself as often as possible. The exceptions are on days like today - I had a late night and an early start, so I was on a Zoom call as soon as I was dressed with coffee in hand.
Depends on the day for me. I go swimming on Tuesdays and Thursdays before clocking in. Breakfast, coffee I grab later in the actual workday. Showers sometimes go in the lunch break slot.
i def take the hour—i usually go for a walk and (if i'm just writing, no meetings) start my day at a cafe. (is it the end of that hour right now, and i should be writing? probably!)
During the pandemic when I was full time WFH with no kids I'd usually get up well before working (I also like to exercise in the morning) but did use the fallback of sleeping until work on occasion.
I wake up, shower, and log right in between 6:30-7:00 a.m. (and try to log out no later than 4:00 p.m.) This was also my schedule when I commuted to work. I can’t chill in the morning for whatever reason.
I used to do the straight to work thing, but for the last year I’ve been forcing myself to wake up a bit earlier so I can do the gym before work and it’s been remarkably valuable for not feeling like I’m going insane at work in my house all day every day.
I always have coffee for at least 20 minutes away from my "office" before clocking in. Sometimes, not often enough, I'll go for a short walk. I miss the going to/coming from work routines quite a bit.
more the latter. for awhile there I was getting up several hours before work, but my internal clock has shifted a bit over the last few years and now it's more like an hour. I also generally shower at the end of the day, though, which opens a bit more time in the morning.
I tell myself I'm going to take some time for myself but I end up just sleeping as late as possible and going through my morning routine before work. Maybe I'll make myself a quick breakfast.
when i was wfh for ~7 years, my routine was wake up, morning exercise class, shower, one chore, read + breakfast, then log on after i do the dishes. Otherwise my apartment was just a Work Zone and I could never relax in it.
I work with a bunch of people in India, so meetings are usually very early. I have "me time" while the coffee is being made, and then I shower before lunch.
Why -don't- you just do whatever the fuck you want when you wake up? Have a bath, masturbate, eat all the Pop Tarts you want, log in. Whether you have kids or not.
I work 50/50 in office and from home. My daily schedule is identical either way. The only difference is do I spend the 20-30 minutes before work starts driving or reading something/playing a bit of a game/watching a show
Depends on my meetings and deadlines for the day. One thing I’ve loved about past WFH jobs is that I had some flexibility about when in the day I was working so long as I was available when coworkers needed and the work got done.
I think it’s healthiest to give yourself an hour of “me” time before starting work, but I’m absolutely not a morning person so on days I did have a 9 AM start time that was a real challenge.
I worked remotely forever and found that if I didn't make time to shower and get dressed and make a run for coffee like I was headed to the office, I'd end up working in my pjs all day until 7pm.
when we first quit our day jobs at EDSBS, we made up four rules for ourselves: shower every day, go outside every day, put on people clothes every day, and have a dedicated space to work, even if it’s just a specific chair. I think I might be dead without any one of the rules
Absolutely. And the shit of it was I didn't realize I was even doing this until my gf moved in with me and was like "uhhh it's 7pm and you haven't moved"
I had to quarantine for two weeks after coming back from China in Jan 2020, so when my org shifted to WFH in March I was consulted like a wise sage. My advice? Remember to shower and get dressed every day. People laughed like it was a joke, but it wasn’t.
Our office has a hybrid schedules, but on my days at home, I kind of split the difference of taking an extra 20 to 30 minutes to get ready but then also start working about 20-30 minutes early.
I'm usually awake several hours before my colleagues on the west coast so my mornings are a mix of personal time and doing admin tasks unbothered. I'm often still online after 5pm ET so I think it is a fair trade
I wake up, put on sweats(unless I have an online meeting), must have coffee ready before I am able to even speak, cuddle the cats, and my hubbie. Takes me about 40 minutes before I fire up. Shower inbetween if you must know 🙃
I have to do something before I log on or I feel like the whole day is just work no matter what time I get off. Ideal is being able to get some coffee and take a walk, but even if it’s just personal screen time, it’s better than just logging straight on and immediately entering work world
I wake up about 30 minutes before work, make coffee and toast, and log on. I've always been a night shower guy though even when I was going to the office
I'll get ready in less of a rush when I'm working from home, but if I have me time in the morning I probably won't get much work done all day, have to start the day in work mode
alarm goes off, snooze for a bit, get up and make coffee, head back to bed to catch up on slack, a bit of a general time on my phone while listening to a podcast, then to the computer
I wake up naturally by 630 or so, and I don't have to log in until 9. So I make a little breakfast, read the NYT, go through my personal emails, kind of putter around online for a bit, sometimes work out.
Bit of both. First thing I do is check work emails for catastrophes, but then I have 1-2 hours of checking out music and going through my RSS before I shift into work mode.
I wake up and login to make sure nothing is on fire (I'm a BI Analyst). Then I go shower and grab my coffee. Then I sit down and start working. Essentially login at 8:30 and start working at 9.
For a long time after starting WFH I'd basically go straight to my desk at 7am and start working. About this time last year I realized I was burning out hard, and so I started "forcing" a free hour or so in the morning where I'd make coffee, read headlines, and only respond to non-work messages.
WFH when to traveling. Hour or two, and I really value that time. Take the dogs out, have some coffee, sit and play a video game for a bit. Starts the day much better than just diving in.
I live alone, and cannot seem to sleep past 5:00 AM. I wake up, make breakfast/coffee, and noodle around online before officially starting work at 8:00 AM.
But I do check work email immediately, so I log on right away.
completely depends on the meeting schedule for the day. if i have an early meeting I usually roll out of bed to take it, but if not then I will log on to check for fires I need to put out and then go take that hour for myself
I got showered, dressed and ready for the day every day as if I was reporting somewhere. A weird thing I found helpful was I had to wear shoes. I know some people are very opposed to wearing shoes in their homes, but it locked my brain into work mode.
My workday begins the moment that I check my phone (calendar, email, ims) because everything I do after that is tainted by thoughts of things I need to accomplish that day
So if I am not ready to start charging my time, I will go watch TV or play NMS for a while, eat cereal, and relax
But unfortunately, most days, I give in right away to the urge to check my calendar because I have anxiety and I'm afraid that I'm forgetting something very important that will need attention right away
It's most often a serious error in judgment, but I'm only human
Well I shower in the evening, so I wake up, pet the cat, make breakfast and coffee, spend ~30min eating and catching up on email, news, bsky, whatever else, then get to work.
Sometimes I have something that needs to be done urgently for today like reviewing a paper so I get straight to that.
Notable exception was a semester when I had a meeting at 10AM on Fridays which is an absolutely inhumane time, so I woke up at 9:55, made myself look reasonable, and hopped straight on the call.
I have colleagues in all kinds of time zones so there's no fixed “supposed to log on” time, except days with meetings which usually end up being 9 AM here, but even then I've usually already been awake for a while. TBH I should probably drag myself out of bed more aggressively.
It depends when my first meeting is. If it’s at 6/6:30 I’m logging on still in pjs. If it’s at 8 I have time to shower/breakfast/go for a walk before I log in and answer some emails before the call.
Some mornings I wake up, shower, make breakfast and coffee, and eat in front of the laptop.
Other mornings, if I’m dragging, i do the shower, breakfast/coffee and I take 15-30 minutes to check the weather and news while I eat on the couch. Then head downstairs.
Contrast that with days I’m in office. It’s earlier wake up and constant movement just to get out the door before I park, sit down, and finally take a moment to collect myself before the first meeting starts.
Before I had a dog that regrettably loves getting up early, I would wake up shortly before I had to log on and just start working. Now I wake up at 6:30am every morning and haven't set an alarm since we got the dog two years ago. Now it's dog walk, breakfast, then log on.
So I suppose my schedule now is probably a lot closer to people who have kids. Before I got laid off in April, I did still log on for work earlier than pre-dog (usually between 7:30 and 8 as opposed to right at 9) and check my emails and other rote tasks before actual working hours started.
I am a night shower person so shower does not factor into the morning schedule. I don't get dressed until whenever my first meeting of the day is usually which I suppose is lazy, but I like being comfy.

I hate working in the office.
That's why I bathe on the company's time.
