If I had run a thought experiment on “what are the characteristics that would make someone’s accidental, preventable death a national news story with real policy consequences?”, Angelo Chao would be the answer.
How is there not a national recall of all Teslas? The doors don’t open in an emergency!

This story is horrifying — after making a mistake with Tesla’s awkward gearshift, Angela Chao found herself sinking into a pond. Emergency services could not break into the Tesla because of the glass used in the cars. Chao died.

Those cars still need to be recalled, though: you've got to be able to break the glass in an emergency.
Imagining the feeling of managing to get my hands on it, cut myself free, taking a swing...and just hearing a dull thunk

In all seriousness, I, too, am very surprised that this is not a bigger deal. It's stunning.
"wtf bulletproof glass why won't that break!"
Tesla’s safety features just killed the sister of the former Secretary of Transportation. That seems hearing-worthy, in normal times.
Hope lives.
The billionaire sister-in-law of the Republican Senate Majority leader slowly drowns because the electric doors on her Tesla don’t manually open?!?
I get elites ignoring normal-people safety hazards. But this is rich-people shit, and they STILL don’t care?
The poorly designed gear shift could be a factor.
Class solidarity is that strong.
A regular person would be suing and demanding regulation.

The dude shrugged and replied, "Why? Shark got his meal."
Tesla got its meal.
Still a fucking death trap, but likely not what killed her
They're implementing ****automatic shifting from park******* as a beta now
The fact that the media is still only nibbling at the edges is also fishy.
it’s only the back ones that are electric.
what am i missing?
It’s the usual conflating car problems with Tesla problems.
Not being able to open a door against water pressure if you drive in to a lake is physics, the X doors have both electronic buttons & manual override latches, & the laminated window glass is no harder to break than any other car.
To the point every passenger who doesn’t know to use the button to open the door naturally finds pulls the manual lever before you can tell them not to.
it’s the backseat that has the electronic doors with the hidden overrides
Car windows need to be (safely) breakable in order for the occupants to have a change of escape or rescue.
So it's not a whoops car accident and she died. It was minutes long. Regardless of who she was, any sane company would immediately settle the incoming lawsuit.
And, given the connections and resources her family has, a lawsuit would be the least of my concerns. We're one "bad ketamine batch" away from Twitter being on the market again.
but in general, the problem is you can't open your door underwater regardless of the mechanism and modern windows are very hard to break. not Tesla-specific problems.
reversing into water b/c of stupid touchscreen controls seems most problematic
this was the last car I ever owned w/ crank windows. i wound down my window, climbed into roof + jumped.
swam a bit. those old windows saved my life.

1. go out the windows. she couldn’t bc they failed and it couldn’t be broken
2. wait til the car fills up with water and the pressure equalizes, then open the doors. impossible to do in an emergency in a tesla.
2 is false. The manual latch in the front doors is exactly where you expect a door handle to be.
the tesla 100% killed her, in like 5 different ways

The Tesla is terribly designed but the doors seem to be the least of the problems leading to her death.
