The beautiful thing about the movie Galaxy Quest is that I’m only somewhat sure Alan Rickman was acting and not just deeply irritated to be in the movie Galaxy Quest

On some podcast they mentioned that what happened to his character sort of happened in real life. An acclaimed actor obsessed over by Harry Potter fans who showed up to his plays dressed in wizard robes
Alan Rickman was an absolute treasure. I think it’s time for another rewatch of all the filmography of his I can access. Robin Hood, Bottleshock, A Little Chaos to start.
Whenever I see Galaxy Quest on TV, or read anything about it posted anywhere I wonder whether people go to Comic Con events as characters from the film or if that would be too self referential
I think Alan is beloved but not fully appreciated because he is best known for popcorn fare.
In the film I made with him, Yasiin Bey (credited as Mos Def) got most of the well deserved critical attention despite Alan’s performance being equally subtle, powerful and moving.
Completely fitting performance for that character too.
At the end of So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, when Marvin learns that god's last message to creation was "We apologize for the inconvenience," he found peace, saying "I think... I feel good about it" before he died.
Alan Rickman was the absolute best at "irritated". My favorite role of his is still Marvin the Paranoid Android from Hitchhikers Guide. Nobody else could have played that role as well. Gone too soon.
There's a documentary about this film. It's interesting.
Tim Allen got emotional in a scene and weirded out about it. Rickman came to his house with a bottle of scotch to talk to him. He was a great guy.
I'll never EVER WATCH ANYTHING WITH TIM ALLEN ...BIGGEST TRUMP SUPPORTER...LIKE CHACCI & HERCULES & SUPERMAN ...LOL...UGH ...BOYCOTT THIER SHOWS LET DISNEY & OTHERS KNOW ...NO $$$ IN THIER TV SHOWS BEING REBROADCAST...CUT OFF THIER PAY FROM RESIDUALS...
IDK, sounds plausible on one hand but on the other hand from what I've heard from behind the scenes it seems like he was a lot like his character in the movie caring about "the craft" and ribbing Tim Allen for his acting!
Like for the scene where Taggart had to confess to Baltazar Tim Allen felt stronger emotions and was taken aback by it and Alan Rickman said something like, "Looks like he just discovered acting!"
A few years ago I went to a screening and after they did a Q&A with Tim Allen (and others). Allen recounted how Rickman was a very serious actor and he was just a comedian so Allen spent a lot of time just fucking with Rickman the way comedians do. So the irritation might have been pretty real.
He says he thought, when reading the script, "What a brilliant idea. I wonder why no one has thought of it before." And he wanted to do some comedy. I don't think Rickman would have done any work he didn't want to. Later, he did the voice of Marvin the Paranoid Android some years later.
If everyone else in the movie played their part the way Rickman played the Sheriff of Nottingham, it would have been rollicking fun, which is what a Robin Hood movie SHOULD be. Robin wasn't a gloomy brooder who never cracked a smile. He ENJOYED his work! Errol Flynn understood. Kevin Costner didn't.
Hell, even Jay from Jay and Silent Bob fame, at the time a major drug addict, got clean for the shooting of Dogma and learned all the lines in the script so that he "wouldn't piss off that Rickman guy". Respect the Rickman.
Apparently, Rickman was really impressed with Mewes and told him how funny he was. They kinda hung out together on that shoot. I like the thought of those two chilling on their lunch break
It just sucks that the second he wrapped his last take, Mewes was off to his trailer to stick the needle in his arm. I am so happy and proud of him for getting clean later in life. I definitely want to see the backstage footage of Rickman and Mewes.
The thing about great acting is to live in the character and behave as they would. In this case, your position is not out of the picture. He could have been doing it BOTH ways. Yrah, imma go with this.
He said he only did it because he was laughing as he read the script, but he loathed science fiction as a genre. Pretty sure he’s just channeling his rage, which makes it even funnier 😂
I don't know as I don't know the quote in context - I belive it's from the DVD commentary. But I always presumed it was the scene where to had to reveal to the aliens that the show was a fake
How can y’all forget about my main gal, Sigourney Weaver!
She got to say some lines she was thinking in all the alien films!
“I have one job on this ship, it’s stupid.”
“What are these here? This episode was badly written!”
I heard someone describe his performance as 'treading a thin line between pretending to be deeply annoyed with his costar Tim Allen, and actually being annoyed with his costar Tim Allen.'
Alexander is one of my favorite characters because his world-weariness and sarcasm are so relatable. Either Alan was constantly thinking "Why the hell did I agree to do this film?" or he played the role of a burned-out, depressed person too well. Hard to know because he was such a great actor.
His character was perfect! A classically trained actor that got roped into a cult-classic sci-fi role with that he viewed w/ contempt and annoyance!
Yeah, he actually might not have been fully acting.
RIP Rickman
There's a meme/copypasta that goes around that says Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island work because in the first, Michael Caine treats the Muppets as fellow actors, and in the latter, Tim Curry treats himself as a fellow Muppet.

Well spotted...
Favourite quote
“Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy”
The movie is such a gold mine.
And also wwweeeeeeeneedyourhelp!
Is there a Geek Bluesky list one can get onto? Asking for a friend...
"Could you possibly try NOT to hit EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!"
And it's the second best Star Trek film imo (WoK #1 of course). 😁

Every actor acted like they’re that character.
And it was a fun ride too.
Tim Allen got emotional in a scene and weirded out about it. Rickman came to his house with a bottle of scotch to talk to him. He was a great guy.
And yes, we drop lines like Monty Python or the Big Lebowski...
But I think you are right. I think he falls in love with making it at about the same time the character does.
Nobody could do scorn like Rickman LOL
So it’ll hurt more!!
…
What an actor.
Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary https://g.co/kgs/2cNbNDc.
Alan had the disgruntled English luvvie accent nailed. His accent reminded me of Kenneth Williams a lot. Personally I think he was acting.
What a loss we suffered with his death.
“TO SEE IF THERE’S A PUB!”
Everyone lost something when he died.
❤️❤️❤️
Damn you.
She got to say some lines she was thinking in all the alien films!
“I have one job on this ship, it’s stupid.”
“What are these here? This episode was badly written!”
And Rickman was perfect.
Tony Shaloub nailed it, too.
🤩😜😎
Yeah, he actually might not have been fully acting.
RIP Rickman
Best line is when he trashes the actor, then looks at him and says "No offense" in the most wonderful voice.
We say it that way all the time in this house.
Especially in the Christmas film, Die Hard.
😄
