good question i've just been asked: is ohio state vs. notre dame the national championship with the highest percentage of fans on both sides who never attended either school?
i think probably. my unscientific impression is that the three programs with the most non-alum fans are osu, michigan, nd

I went to a D3 school and yet that had TONS of fans of both on campus
Down where I grew up, UGA's team was cheered for more than, say, the Atlanta Falcons. Maybe it's just something from GA.
Texas USC though i think would surprise a lot
It stands to reason they have the largest non-alumni bases as well
Might be being a bit of a homer on that, but I do think it's a defensible position
I also grew up in Northeast Ohio, so I was one of the few non-Ohio State fans around.
(I was a ND fan before we moved there when I was 5 however)
Some noms:
Washington
Colorado
Michigan
Northwestern
BYU
Bama gained a lot in 1st 5 Saban years but from there also picked up increasing hate-watchers too
I KNOW they are online; Bama's online fanbase almost rivals K-State's for "actually went there", surprisingly enough.
Ditto some Army Navy game of the same era
