I didn’t leave X because people there had different opinions and ideologies, I left because it stopped being fun. I get on social media to chat with people who think thinking is fun. X stopped being a place where that was true.

If I’m honest the toxicity becomes normalised by it’s over reaching use. After a while you have to stop and say, I disagree with this but I’ve exposed myself to so much that filtering the sense of menace is becoming difficult. A period of purification is required.
The thing that bothered me most was that I found myself getting mean in my replies to the trolls. I used to be able to turn the other cheek, ignore them but the attacks got increasingly personal, increasingly vile and I responded in kind. That’s not the person I want to be.
I left because it became a place where liberals were being silenced. There were numerous times when I would sign in after being off the platform for 24 hours or more and I would get a message that I had exceeded my daily limit for likes or posts. It felt very slanted toward those on the right.
Totally. I left because the vitriol seriously got old, sigh. I want to engage in debate, not deal with mouth breathing, knuckle dragging troglodyte bullies.
I left cause after Emerald Mine fired everyone, it became a broken unusable pile of junk. I didn't need to wait for it to be nothing but nazis and bots, it was over for me long before then.
Exactly. I deleted my account about a year ago because my feed was full of people I didn't follow, ads I didn't want, and the feed resetting all the time.
Ditto. I torched my Twitter -for so it still was at the time - and Facebook accounts when I realized I didn't need to enter a username and password to access stupid.
I used to love debating politics online, but debate can only happen when both parties adhere to facts. In MAGA world, there's no debate. Just chimps and white cats flinging feces and declaring it "a win". It's tiresome and pointless.
This is the part the frustrated me about the echo chamber discourse. It assumes that the only way to understand the other side is to accept the abuse and bad faith arguments. No thanks.
Elon is really pushing politics on X. I had to mute so many accounts during the days leading up to the election. My feed is finally back to normal but how many users I had to mute to get it to that point I don’t want to think about 😔
The last time I was on X some MAGA clown called me a communist, a socialist, and woke. When I returned fire I was immediately suspended. That’s when I quit X. And I won’t be back for their abuse.
I haven’t had the heart to delete my Twitter account just yet, so I have it on private for the time being due to safety reasons. But I get what you mean.
The main reason I joined @bsky.app was to get away from all that toxicity. Because like you said, it’s just not fun being over there anymore.
Aside from Elon I left because there was no conversation, it was just abuse, memes and abusive memes. I don't block right wing here, I block anyone who doesn't engage and instead "shouts"
They often reply with things like their blue sky handles or similar. It might also sway others who see it as well :). Oh well, it’s just a little thing I do to try and encourage the good accounts :). (And to drive Voldemusk as mad as I can)
It was fun early on, then it was everybody's soap box (which wasn't bad; I learned and was exposed to so much), then it became this place where so many just seemed to want to put the nastiest and rot of their spirits on display.
They are dangerous but also deeply pitiable because, when it's all done, they still have to live with themselves. And they hate themselves more than anyone else ever could.
I left Twitter (X) because I literally got locked out. 🤣 I don't know why either. It's not like I was famous and had tons of followers. I can't even log back in to close my account.
For a party who wants to escape trump, I see his name mentioned here more than i did on x. People wanted to come here for a "safe space". Then they end up bringing the same bullshit mindset with them. Now who's fault is that? A chance to start over and you all ruin it yourself like usual
I left twitter because it became clear the follow requests were ALL bots. The names sounded fake the photos were all wide shots or the back of a head. Their time lines were soulless and appeared very impersonal.
I hear ya, I left for almost the same reason.. I see it as the X platform has come down to extreme politics and im not the one to argue over the " Good Morning " post I put out for the purpose of wishing well to the world..
(っ-_-)っ
I left cuz I got booted by elmo, but THAT'S exactly why I left Threads. Half the time blocking idiots and fighting shitty AI moderation that made it a bannable offense to say "Hitler" or "Nazi" or "fascist", etc.
God! I literally don't have the mental strength for that level of bullshit.
I’m wondering if people felt like Threads was a legitimate option. Or what is seen as the difference between Blue Sky and Threads, outside of ownership.
I'm still there, but the ideologies I constantly saw, which consisted of blind allegiance to an immoral political figure, ethonationalism, and bigotry, make it quite unfun to be on there. And yes, these three things do sound a lot like fascism.
Same here. I left because it’s nothing but crypto ads and spam. No relevant conversation happens in the replies anymore, just anger bots and old viral video reposts.
I left because they amplified white supremacist. It’d be one thing if racist just exist, but having to see ads & then them verified & pushed on my TL was my boiling point
I left because this platform has more features baked into it and no incentivization (so far). Musk being a dickhead with grandiose plans and repeated broken promises sealed the deal.
I got into x late, 2023 and I was like why do people like this.. I don’t think I ever really noticed Organized TROLLs until Gaza thing happened and then the accounts between fake “Black men & Women” accounts leading up to the election. In hindsight it’s crazy how they pretended to be us for division
I agree however I think what finally pushed me off X was the hate and constant violent hatred towards anyone & everyone who was different or different opinions. Musk being the worst. The calls for violence is so disheartening I couldn’t do it anymore. Example attched if allowed…
I saw that one and was horrified by the hatred. At first I planned to stubbornly tough it out and call out the vileness, but then my niece's hubby pointed out that staying on twitter was to Musky's benefit. I just couldn't stomach that.
That one really got to me and I took a break for a while after seeing that but I hung on a little longer & it just continued with Musk being a big contributor to violence & his degradation of women. That was it for me. Not sure how advertisers are okay with all that but I won’t accept that anymore.
I hope others see the ruin that comes with people who openly and proudly display such vitriol. I’m a bit perplexed at advertisers who support that though.
Agreed. I still use Twitter, but stopped engaging with certain people who’ve made up their minds and just want to tell how terrible a person I am and how stupid or traitorous I am.
I left X because it became too much racism, bigotry, misogyny, antisemitism and threatening behavior. Someone DM'd me my home address and complained that Hitler has missed my family. It was increasingly a dangerous place.
I really think there’s too little attention being paid to the changes in usability — paid accounts getting pushed to the top, algorithm changes, MASSIVE ad load, the disappearance of verification. Like … it’s not that the political mix hasn’t changed, but many other things have changed too.
Yeah. What I enjoyed on Twitter was conversation and back-and-forth. You can't have a conversation in a room where a bunch of total assholes can pay $5 for a megaphone.
One of the strangest things I had with the App (and only happened *after* the takeover) is that it just didn't work when it my phone was on charge. Utterly bizarre
All of this, and for me the biggest loss of usability was the loss of the search functionality. I used Twitter like an interactive, searchable notebook of my own, and other people’s ideas… these days the search draws a blank even when I *know* I’ve talked about something in loads of tweets.
All the damn endless and daily sex bot accounts. Well, the bot accounts on a range of fronts. Awful. Voldemusk will be training his AI system on those angry conversations in there. I’m sure it’s going to love humanity when it gets used. I should just laugh at that, but…eek.
Musk didn't redesign it for usability. He redesigned it to help advance his fascist political agenda and elect MAGA. So, from that vantage point, it worked.
Something so simple as being able to click on your post and view the replies, is not possible with X, because they sort them arbitrarily and also include random posts and ads. It truly became unusable.
These millions of fake accounts on X follow each other and give the impression of being very popular. This is how they fool the unwary into believing that the majority of the population agrees with these lies. We must convince all the sane people to get out of this cesspool.
In X there are millons of bots, created in the trolls factories of the far right. Operators receive instructions from information manipulators and spread them. Each one manages hundreds or thousands of accounts and thus reaches millions.
Musk is gross, but the fetishization of his evil powers is rivaled only by the fetishization of Trump's evil powers and in both cases the unreason is part of the problem.
This was even more problematic for businesses/orgs that relied on automation (API stuff) for posting, the opening up of blue-check trolling vulnerability, and especially the viability of posting external links. Forgetting even the brand risks of being seen around nazis.
They also don’t understand the vast majority of users are readers, not posters. It stopped being fun and interesting to read when it became infested with blue check bots and chucklefucks
The fact that videos almost never played for me and half the time it wouldn't load new tweets was a huge deal breaker for me. Add in all the other shit and it's easy to walk away.
Oh those last few months there turned into elon buying the election for Trump.
We all saw it.
Hopefully some people out there are writing about it & documenting it for the history books.
I left X for a variety of reasons, but my main thing was engagement. I couldn’t get any meaningful interactions on X. As well, the majority of my followers were bots. I had like 60 or 70 bots follow me. This is funny too as potbellied blood emerald man was bitching about bots before ruining the site
I’ve never been on X and this is my first day on Blue Sky, but I understand your thoughts because social media should definitely be fun. I’ve met some of the best people from social media!
Tbh, I left X because it sucked. The bots, the people lying for clout, the bots, the pay to get verified... Elon is also very scummy too... I didn't wanna be in there any longer since that would mean I would be giving Elon money with ads, and that personally made me stop posting there.
https://x.org/ , a communications protocol for Unix machines to talk to graphics terminals, formalized in the mid-1990s and still used on Linux and *BSD machines today. :-)
These platforms are like a personal magazine that I’ve curated for myself. Twitter’s self-curating tools sucked, and they sucked more after Pepe the Frog took over.
I never had a Twitter so maybe I don't get it, but when I switched from MySpace to Facebook I don't remember it being a very big deal. Why is there any pressure to stay somewhere that sucks? Trying to keep people on Twitter is addict behavior.
When you jumped from myspace/fb the majority of your connections were probably friends/family and it’s much easier to reconnect with those people on a new platform. Twitter has also been around a lot longer in comparison.
And because a lot of those connections are with strangers/content creators/journalists etc, it’s harder to not only find those people on a new platform, but also hard for those people to be found again.
I stopped using Twitter because it morphed into 4Chan and stopped being fun.
I also stopped using it because my trans self got tired of seeing constant content telling me I was a monster. Stuff that I never ran into IRL even living in the deep south of America.
I no intention of leaving X right now. I’m not on there as much, but I still want to see & interact with people that made it fun for me. I know in time, I will leave but not now
Funny how Elon makes more electric cars and solar panels than any other company in the world, and liberals HATE him. Amusing. I love those that belittle his business skills for X, and Space X rockets that blow up. How many billions have YOU made in your business ventures? Launch any rockets lately?
I personally left because there IS such a thing as a wrong opinion as well as immoral ones.
Being a fascist in a democratic country, spouting lies about people of color, calling LGBTQIA+ sexual predators, making fun of poor people, etc. ain't valid opinions in 2024, it's just hate speech.
This is that quiet guy who rarely says anything, then all of a sudden sinks a stunner into the quiet of the breakroom. Then back to eating like nothing happened, lol.
I have said for years that “liberals”have so much variation they could easily become 2-3 different political parties. I don’t think we need to worry about being an echo chamber bec we all push ourselves to learn and think. At least, that’s my take.
I understand the people who think about Xitter, "I was here first, I'm not gonna let Elon's crew destroy it without a fight."
But the place has become the social media equivalent of necrotizing fasciitis. Sometimes you've got to amputate the leg to save the rest of the body.
Getting paid for engagement ruined it *for me*, where I was making $20-100 a month for my twoots. It became work, not fun. And for basically “less than beer money.”
You nailed it Ashley. It’s quite toxic at X & no longer feels as hopeful and energized as it did my first day over 14 years ago. Starting out slow here as I do not know how to transfer my followers but I’m good w/growing at this pace.
I deleted app but decided I should fully deactivate old accnt - just quickly signed on to do so and the first thing I saw was a video of some twat screaming that everything wrong with the world is feminism and that was somehow all the Jews fault … so yeah.. I think we’ve all made the right choice.
After I was told that the vaccination symbols in my bio were "virtue signaling" and "your time is coming" I thought that the light hearted levity of the place had diminished more than somewhat. No one needs to engage with that shite.
Agreed. I didn’t even get much hate (I’m white so that helped and didn’t have a huge following). I just started being spammed with bots and could never see the people I wanted to hear from in my feed. It was all ads for weird shit.
I stopped shopping at tractor supply when they stopped supporting diversity. I deactivated my x acct because I don't want to be a part of what it is becoming under EM.
Agreed! It’s fun to enjoy having good dialogue that challenges our understanding and benefits not only ourselves but our broader community. I also don’t miss the millions of bots as well!

And the meanness is the least of what Twitter has become. The spewing hatred, the deliberate lies and all the rest has turned it into a cesspool.
Hard no.
Bluesky is nice and all, but could we have the ability to make minor edits perhaps?
The main reason I joined @bsky.app was to get away from all that toxicity. Because like you said, it’s just not fun being over there anymore.
Change of ownership for me.
Who wants to be exposed to that constantly.
And the same for Threads.
Also, the owners a full on loon, which didn't help.
at me and calling me
names.
I can get that locally.
(っ-_-)っ
God! I literally don't have the mental strength for that level of bullshit.
I'm on social media because I want to be.
We are not the same.
I’m sorry you had to deal with that.
Elon does it for you.
Musk is gross, but the fetishization of his evil powers is rivaled only by the fetishization of Trump's evil powers and in both cases the unreason is part of the problem.

I don't ever again want shock I had on Nov 5th and the feeling of "How could I have been so wrong about this election result?!"
Also, this was not a free and fair election. JUST the voter suppression alone is enough--it wasn't a fair election. It's okay for us to say it.
You made me laugh twice in that hour, so thanks for joining, I should say, I guess. :D
But the place has become the social media equivalent of necrotizing fasciitis. Sometimes you've got to amputate the leg to save the rest of the body.
I did wonder if it was a post-Covid socio-economic factor. However, I think Musk destroyed Twitter for his own geo-political agendi.
Especially if you're intrinsically motivated to do it.
Then it's an S-Tier activity.
I didn’t anticipate how spot-on that assessment proved to be.
