There are really only two "mystery box" shows that I felt were worth my time last year and this coming year (for "mystery box shows," think LOST): FROM and SILO. As always, your mileage may differ.

I for one am disappointed with Silo. The tv series concentrates on minor details of the overall story arc while so far leaving out some really big stuff. Hopefully the real craziness is addressed in seasons 3 and 4.
They made up a random character, to deprive the love story with Lucas. The show is deliberately distorting characters, to force a narrative that is defeating the point of the books. It's a subtle change, otherwise the show was good. I lost interest in S2, books are way, way better.
Love Silo and am waiting for S2 of Severance. Sense 8 is also great and was pleasantly surprised by Fallout. If you like foreign dystopian realities 3% & The Barrier are very good. I will try From.
If you havenβt indulged in Severance yet, too, youβre missing out. Every person working that show, behind and in front of the camera, knocks it out of the park. Props to whoever has been green-lighting Apple TVβs sci-fi lineup.
Huge fan of FROM. Literally just finished binging the last episode of season 3 a half hour ago. I know season 4 has been green lighted; hope itβs not too long a wait. Will check out SILO.
FROM is brilliant. Had me hooked 5 mins in. Will definitely be checking SILO out. Pretty sure I love your taste. You've certainly written enough books that have affected my life. My bff and I would ask if the other was 5x5. yearsother
my life in numerous ways. always ask eachotger if we were 5x5
I have a problem with "mystery box" shows if they're essentially just vamping. It's not necessarily *easy* to bait that narrative hook, but it's way easier than bringing it to a conclusion that feels meaningful. I think Lynch did it well, but I feel like he deliberately withholds closure.
Thanks for this - Every show I thought had "Lost potential" (Revolution and Flash Forward, respectively) was cancelled after season two. I'll check out SILO for sure
Having never heard of from, Iβve just seen my 1st trailer for it at the same time as reading your Skeet. Cool coincidence! Will give it a try on your rec.
I am so conflicted by Silo. There are only 10000 people but all of this mystery and secrets? Have you ever been to a town of 10K or less? Everyone knows everything and everyone. Also, relics are bad but everyone has them, and doctors exist but where did they go to med school? Who makes their tools?
It is implied that βmechanicalβ just makes everything, but like autoclaves? Scalpels? Burn tape? Idk thereβs a point where the whole 10000 people thing just doesnβt make sense
I think thatβs probably the only aspect where having read the books first helps, *if* thatβs the kind of detail that typically bothers you.
Iβll note that I live in a town of under 10,000 people and only regularly interact and know the business of about 1% of those.
Severance is also amazing. Wicked sci fi. I hadnβt seen it because I thought it was a Succession clone. Just a fantastic premise that lets your imagination run wild.
Dark, Tales From The Loop, and Severance are my faves. Liking SILO too, but gets a bit draggy for me in S2. FROM's new season kind of loses me for the same reason sometimes, plus the gore is getting a bit gratuitous, imo. I don't mind reading it, but don't necessarily want to see it.
FROM just didnβt seem to go anywhere in the middle to end. I didnβt Finish. GEEZ do I have a short attention span like the other half of Americans? SILO. Love
Silo S2 has been really poor though. So slow and spending a lot of time on plotlines that nobody really cares about. If you didn't want to have Rebecca Ferguson on screen, they should have just done the actual story from book 2.
YES! I binged From over the holidays, it is so gripping! Am also on board the Silo bandwagon, I'm just a sucker for the dystopian mystery. Both of these shows are just excellent.
Silo was one of the worst shows Iβve ever seen. They get A list actors and an interesting story for 1 episode, then string you along in the most tedious and nonsensical way.
Well, it wouldn't be for lack of major players. Ben Stiller directing. Stars include John Turturro and Christopher Walken. That would have to be a must watch under any circumstances.
YES! The torment of waiting all of 2024, finding the news of "friction" between Stiller and team, only to finally see the trailer. This is going to be awesome! I have to pace my viewing, so I can relish this season for as long as possible.
Like Game of Thrones, the show is sufficiently different from the books to make both unique experiences.
Youβre going to know the story in the broadest strokes by reading the books first, but to get four seasons of TV out of the books the main plot is going to take a few detours along the way.
I saw the first season and then read the books. The scene description are pretty sparse in the book so I actually liked having the TV visuals in my head. There's also a fair amount of deviation between the two plots and emphases
I agree completely. I watched season 1, lost my mind in the last 5 minutes of the season, then listened to all the audiobooks. Watching it gave me a visual framework to expand on while listening. What an utterly different and fascinating sci-fi world. π₯°
Our fam is watching FROM now. It's *fantastic* but I have Lucy and the Football Syndrome (LATFS) from the devastating entertainment malpractice that was the LOST ending. Please god god let FROM deliver.
Absolutely hooked on Silo. Hugh Howey has gotten quite a bit of my book allowance money this year.
Iβve heard great things about From, but Iβm holding out until itβs free on Prime again.
Does anyone else think Silo was filmed too dark? I get that you need the impression of being buried underground, but it makes it hard to see.
Loved the books.
The next time you give an interview, could you play a prank on the interviewer by attaching yourself to invisible wires and then inexplicably start floating around?
didn't watch SILO, regarding FROM, I only hope they can tie together all the loose ends once the show ends, right now the show seem to be all over the place.
As a public service here is the βmystery boxβ TED talk with JJ Abramβs. Used this often as a film teacher to help students with their storytelling. https://youtu.be/vpjVgF5JDq8?si=wwtGRwwu4RMvfW6C
i'm sorry but "mystery box show" just made me think u were referring to game shows like deal or no deal, then you mentioned lost which i love and realised I may have taken a wrong turn

Hope the series doesn't go fk it up.
Silo is one show I do watch.
Good call here.

But I don't want to start up another streaming service for one show
Really, really looking forward to Season 2 of Severance!
From is just an amazing surprise.
I always thought of it as βconfusion pornβ.
So, for now I choose to believe Silo Magic makes "it"(whatever it needs to) happen.
Can't let a few /s lil ol' plot holes ruin a good dystopian sci fi.
Iβll note that I live in a town of under 10,000 people and only regularly interact and know the business of about 1% of those.
Worth continuing though?
(But Silo may have us βall inββ¦)
I had to watch an hour-long refresher before this season just to remember what happened before
SILO is excellent, loved the books too!
But yeah, after S1 , I went and read the books. The story is complex so I found after reading the books, the show is easier to follow.
This is not a paid promotion.π
Also, I highly recommend the Sand series by the same author. Not as good but worth the read.

(Iβve read WOOL and am about 1/3 done with SHIFT)
Iβve heard great things about From, but Iβm holding out until itβs free on Prime again.
Silo is not bad.
Not bad at all.
I will have to find the original books.
Canβt wait that long for a new episode.
Lost does not ring a bell though.
Loved the books.
The books were amazing. I couldnβt put them down.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
I am hopeful.
