I accidentally updated the iPhone iOS last night, despite weeks of refusing to do so, and it’s amazing how tech tech companies manage to make their products worse with every improvement

I didn’t realize it was going to be so different. 😭
Photos layout is different. And I had to specifically add viewing my Favorites. When you edit them, even simple stuff like cropping has all the presets switched. And the background is white instead of black.
It really shouldn't (and thats not the only way stuff is getting worse)
And besides, at that point apple should make not updating (or only getting security patches) an option instead of doing everything in its power to force you without literally doing it for you
You can assume every decision a corporation makes is for profit (its actually illegal for them not to, shareholders can sue them)
The only time apple will do anything for your benefit is if it's profitable to do so (or legally required)
And that's me talking as a software engineer when Apple has better products for that. And yes, they should allow for only security updates, but sometimes you have to have all the updates for the security updates. Plus, if your phone is old, it can't handle even security updates.
Oh, I'm not saying that's not the case. I used to sell phones and now work in software. The hardware literally can't keep up with the software, and because companies push "innovation," the consumers unfortunately eat the costs. Apple is one of the worst with this. I won't use their products.
Well the 6s doesn’t get certain ones because of hardware limitations. I mainly use it for a travel extra phone and audiobooks but it’s a warrior for sure.
I still can’t understand how Apple makes the voice keyboard, worse and worse with every major release and yet an android phone has impeccable voice to text
Open Photos in the Library … there is a small up/down pair of arrows adjacent to the Years Months All selector …click the arrows, click View Options, then select Zoom In to make the thumbnails larger.
Yearly a new group of 21 year old bros show up with their idea of how things should be and how they can save the company money by abandoning functionality that “nobody” uses - meaning those under 20 rarely use (yet).
It now takes forever to get to passwords, something I do frequently. My brain is not able to learn new things as easily. Why do you think they mess with us like this?
Bluesky is in some ways an example of how fast users could want to switch to a different platform when there is a substantial jump regarding form and function of the device.
Cheers
Why do I need to delete 30 apps for space for a 7gb download? Why is there no replace option where I keep my stuff and update. Now show me how to find my passwords. 😡😡😡😡
My Windows computer recently melted down and had to be replaced. The old computer had W10. Nothing wrong with it. The new has W11. Unusable. I probably lose 15-20 minutes of productivity Every Single Day. 🤬
While I agree that there’s a lot of things that don’t need to be changed, a lot of it is just people not liking change. Seeing people so misinformed on tech in the replies is bonkers too.
Apple was one of the companies fined a fortune in the EU for deliberately rolling out updates that made their products worse, in a purposeful attempt to force their customers to buy new products.
What’s wrong with all those things? I would argue the calendar is better now because I can see what events are on a day instead of just a silly dot which requires me to tap into the day to see events.
They complicate the design of the apps, make them more difficult to use. That's the opposite of what they should do.
Regarding the ‘select’, I don't understand why you have to take 3 tries to do something which was super smooth in IOS 17 (like selecting a word, moving it to another place).
Make the product worse, and people will buy it. That's how the world's democracies have been run recently, at least. [and, no, I'm no fan of authoritarianism]
*Updates iPhone*
The iPhone: We've improved a lot of stuff, like the performance, we thought it was too good and decided to bring it to "can barely make phone calls without overheating and disabling itself, burning you in the process" levels
They're all so obsessed now with constantly changing UI and moving things around. It doesn't somehow make things "better" when you have to figure out where something's moved for the 10th time.
Imo the only things they really fucked up with iOS 18 is the photo gallery app (reorganised for the worse and for no good reason), the brightness slider (literally just doesn't work sometimes) and screenshotting (also just doesn't work sometimes) other than that it's mostly fine
Microsoft does that with items on context menus in Windows 11 now. You never know where an item is going to be, you have to open the menu and read each line.
My Roku also started reorganizing our apps based on what we watched recently
Is that what’s happening with the Roku??? I just reorganized the apps on our travel stick back to normal and was confused why they changed. Good grief.
I have everything organized by genre (sports, movies, tv, artsy stuff, etc), and we watch such a wide range of things it will be impossible to find anything if they start moving things around. I’ll definitely find that setting! I wish they’d ask if we want to use a new feature!
Yes! I have a Motorola. I like it.
I was given an iPhone 14 for my job last August and I fail to see why people hold them in such high esteem.
I had Sonys for many years and I like those, too.
Android keyboards are superior to Apple.
Photos has a lot more things stuffed into the main UI, and as a result the old straightforward go in - back out has broken. You have to use little x’s to get out now, and they are in different places in different parts of it.
Still not sure what you mean :/. Opening photos puts you right into your main photos list, you can scroll up to see your photos or down to see albums (which can be customized at the very bottom), and everything that I’ve tried can be closed with a swipe down.
Used to be that you open photos and you can quickly go to years, months or days right there on the screen. Now you have to know that you pull your screen down in order to get those options. Do you press the X at the bottom to go out of that? Or pull up?
Swipe down and then left-to-right starting at the edge of your screen to access months & years. Never been more convenient ngl. you don’t have to press a button at all.
The new update is awful. So many unnecessary changes to the UI which I honestly believe adds little value to the user experience. I’m a starting to miss Android again.
As an older person I can tell you it isn't just tech companies. Many of us are suspicious of any product that is emblazoned with the words "new & improved!" It usually means it costs more, doesn't taste as good, doesn't work as well ...
Serious question- I’ve been waiting to see if an 18.1.2 or similar would come along as a patch? I see the value in security etc but I like the way my phone LOOKS and functions rn…
As one who has regretted updates before (drain monsters, some)- 🤷♀️
I think when you have dark mode on, they now redesign the icon backgrounds to make them dark as well. Looks like total crap against the image I have set as my background, though.
Long press somewhere on the screen, then you will see a button top left that says Edit. Click Customize, then you will see options for Light (which will put the icons back the way they used to be), Dark, or Automatic (where it changes depending on time of day).
Thank you, not only did the update turn dark mode on, it turned on location sharing and app tracking. They should not be allowed to change any settings that compromise personal safety during updates.
It is called engineered obsolescence, to make you buy a new or different one because it fails to do as it was or it stops working altogether, why do you think a a light bulb burns out after a year. It was engineered to do so or you never replace it.
There should be a trial period wherein it goes back the previous version of you don’t stop by a certain length of time. We can put a golf cart on Mars, we should be able to fix this!😜
It sucks, doesn’t it? My phone wouldn’t connect to my cell data after the update and I had to turn it off and then monkey around with the settings to make it work again. My calendar looks like a comic strip and I can’t seem to change it.
I updated my phone to iOS 18 the week it came out and hated it so much I ended up just reverting it back to 17 because that was during the short timeframe apple was still signing the os
It’s because they don’t care what consumers want anymore. They know we will accept whatever so they make things that help THEM now and pitch it like it’s an upgrade.
It's a product of getting older. You get stuck in your ways, don't care about new features you don't use and dislike any changes you do use.
Basically it's somebody telling you how to do your job.
One of the few things I hate about iOS/iPhones. STOP FUCKING UPDATING MY PHONE AUTOMATICALLY. Or ask me ONCE and STFU. „We’re gonna update it this night when ur phone is plugged in“ how about NO YOURE NOT ffs. Sorry for raging.
I'm just sitting here with my 6th Samsung Andoid in about 15 years... Yes I was an early adapter. Loved them all...upgraded for new features and never disappointed. They just keep getting better...
That’s just software in general. You’re welcome to switch from iPhone to something else if you hate it so much, but you’re not going to escape software updates no matter what. You could always create your own OS?
It’s so frustrating! Why is my phone now an app? Why can’t it all be in settings? Why are emojis huge now? There’s always something in there to like, but it’s always outweighed by changes that make the user experience worse.
And can be especially confusing for someone at the stage of their life where eyesight is drastically worsening
If I have to reach for phone middle of the night, full squint unless I manage to find the glasses first
I've noticed this pattern years ago. In the early days, an engineer dreams up something great and makes it. It is successful and everyone loves it. A company grows, sales/marketing/business ppl take over the design and it becomes garbage.
Wordpress is the perfect example of improvements making the program worse. It used to be so simple, now it's a mess for a beginner. I'd never recommend it these days.
Agree
I refuse to update iPad but then it won’t type or something else weird.
Like a dog that wants fed and starts whining.
I wish I could stop that slide thing off . Everytime I touch the side of I pad , swish, it comes across.
Hmm no, that's just an Apple thing. The last dozen or so non-Apple products I purchased were indeed improvements over previous things I had. None of them were flawless but they were all overall much better
Congrats on joining the “accidental update” club! Enjoy your new “features” like a slower phone, rearranged icons you didn’t ask for, and a battery life that now lasts about as long as a TikTok video. Truly cutting-edge innovation at its finest.
To make you pay for 'improvements' they have to add things to the product, whether you need them or not. I just wish they could update the operating system to take advantage of new technology and leave the cosmetics and interface alone.
I have a lot of photo albums all beginning with the year and then title, and a lot of albums with just title. They were previously separated out, but the update mixed them all up 😱
Remember the codes they added that one year that made older phones "run out of battery" sooner? They were caught and had to remove that, but not under a bunch of us, including me, had to get a new phone. They offered a rebate afterwards but it was too late and too much of a hassle.
They were slowing down the processor speed to improve battery life on a degraded battery. But they didn’t inform their users and it was seen as slowing down old phones to sell new phones.
it didn't slow down the phone, it would turn mines off as if there is no more battery, happened abruptly after the upgrade instead of gradually like how a real battery dies slowly over time.
That’s actually what they were trying to prevent. By slowing down the speed they lowered power demand. Sometimes an app demanding too much performance would ask too much from the battery causing abrupt shutdown. Aged batteries lose their predictable drain.
18.1? For the first time in years I’ve been delighted with it and actually found a raft of little improvements. Calendar does look a bit weird but I’ll get used to it.
You can change how the events are displayed by pinching in/out, being able to actually see the events and not just have a dot is pretty useful imo but i know it’s not for everyone.
Yeah, I've tried various permutations and am happy enough with what I've got, although I don't see the point of the wee calendar/clock icon against each listing. I also don't get why default calendar listings show the start and end times and other calendars don't.
did it change your messenger text appearance by chance? like a more... streamlined font somehow? since yesterday I swear it's… Not the same as it always has been🤷♀️ My thighs did decide to accidentally change a few settings while driving (yay touchscreens) but doesn't appear font size was one of them.
I adored Android 8 and wished to stay on it forever, but unfortunately Google wants to put me on Android 13. I got so accustomed to 8 and its slick design, moving up meant re-learning the OS with a higher performance demand. Just let me pick...
I'm glad it's not just me. I think the update is the worst I've had yet. I really hate the photo options and how they tweaked them and the calculator is wonky.
I’m actually updating the moment it comes out, (I guess im a sheep 🐑) but honestly haven’t noticed anything. Most updates are just bug fixes.
And I was a former notorious jailbreaker. Oh I feel nostalgic how rebellious that used to be!
Also why do they insist on tricking us into upgrading? Windows is the worst culprit.
How about they funnel their resources into making the upgrade desirable instead of bombarding you with adverts and links to upgrade till you click accidentally.
‘Yes, you can manually go back to legacy Outlook email, but we’ll find out and change it again for you because we know what works best for you, regardless of what you think.’ Also, Teams. Why use it for anything other than online meetings? Has really complicated my work tech experience.
seriously every time i try to go to my recent emojis my muscle memory takes me here and it makes me want to throw my phone at a wall. who even uses these
Not just iPhone. I have written to Samsung multiple times about the last few 'upgrades'🤬 The ONLY thing they have changed is the number of popup adds when I'm trying to use the phone🤬

by perhaps I mean definitely.

Maybe Tim Apple needs to retire and give someone else a chance?
It’s in a never ending cycle of trying to power on.
Apple is sending a shipping box to send it in for a software issue.
My iPad is still pristine, holds a long charge & worked perfectly before IOS 18.
Plz report all issues to Apple so they are aware.
these are not for utility anymore.
they’re fashion pieces.
they’re creator tools.
they’re engagement and tracking devices.

So yeah, you're absolutely right.
The Calendar is worse.
The multi-language keyboard is shit.
The selection of text in any app is worse.
Regarding the ‘select’, I don't understand why you have to take 3 tries to do something which was super smooth in IOS 17 (like selecting a word, moving it to another place).
Thanks jerks at apple.

It's infuriating
I don't want version 7.6, I just figured out 5.1. Why does 7.6 fuck with the menus STOP MOVING IT.

Exact thing happened to me and I could kick myself. 🤦🏼♂️
I’m deliberately not clearing joke pictures my friends have sent me for this exact reason.
It’s a bit of a mess.
Doable, but it’s more complex now.
Are you saying you don't want them to spy on you...
"resistance is futile" I've heard...
That new iPhone ain't gonna buy itself.
As one who has regretted updates before (drain monsters, some)- 🤷♀️
You may find a surprise or two.
Also, system updates quite often reset your settings.
Always check.
Capitalism = planned obsolescence
Android overrated?
cheers 🍻 to z coders helping de_enshitify incessant corporate greed.
Basically it's somebody telling you how to do your job.
battery life -50%
older apps i actively use without recent updates -4
Will that stop the Barry White music playing in the background too?
What other product do we spend thousands of dollars on just to wake one morning and it be completely different??
BS
What’s wrong with your calendar? You can zoom in/out on the main list of days to show you more/less info about the events.

"Look at how they massacred my boy!!"
Our minds have a benchmark for features and functionality. We know when it changes and generally don't like it.
Also, new features are not readily apparent, or attractive.
Then, as you say, there's the feeling 'why did they change that?'
And I was a former notorious jailbreaker. Oh I feel nostalgic how rebellious that used to be!
How about they funnel their resources into making the upgrade desirable instead of bombarding you with adverts and links to upgrade till you click accidentally.
I had the same issues getting used to it, but honestly, a week later now my brain manages haha
I cannot translate. Maybe "to terribleimprove"
We are very familiar with it, everyboby does it...
