I remember a date where we wound up watching M2 late at night. Even remember some of the videos! Everything But The Girl, Poe, Arrested Development. Yes. Nice memory. ❤️
My date and I were watching the video for “Angry Johnny” and I was “blown away” both by the beauty of the singer and the violent (but funny) lyrics. We both got a kick out of it.
I remember doing that, listening to a song on my off brand ipod whilst sharing the left bud of my wired earphones (cuz that one works better than the right one) with her, well that and dancing like maniacs to bad romance
Didn’t fall in love with any girls but I did fall in love with Agent Mulder on one of those lil black and white 3-inch travel TVs because “the occult” was forbidden in my household
My mom was confused about the difference between “the occult” and “cults.” Friends was also banned because, she said, it was “sexually amoral,” but what I think she meant was “IMmoral.” And I was like MOM, if you can’t even have clear operational definitions on which your rules are based…
Is thinking “ THERES a name I haven’t heard in a while ! Rufus W… “ wanders off to dig for a cd … but … keeps one eye open for Hank dancing down the street …
I remember discovering him because I downloaded a song off napster that according to the filename was sung by Elliot Smith but it was actually Rufus Wainright.
I remember watching the Celtics win in the '80s and never had watched basketball before just to get to know Karl N. when I was in 8th grade art class. On a tiny black and white TV- were didn't have color TV in my house. LOL.
(M2 is MTV2, right? The second MTV channel that just played music videos? I LIVED with that channel playing whenever it was my turn with the remote. Then Much Music hit the airways, loved that, and I think it rebranded to something else years later...Fuse? Anyway I miss music videos on the tv.)
I saw him open for Sloan in a small venue years ago before his first album dropped. He was so extremely talented just him and a keyboard and his sister doing some backups
No, but I do remember being “security” at my college’s Dave Matthews/Rufus Wainright show, including having to protect Rufus from the college girls trying to swarm him for autographs or whatever 😬
I remember falling in love with a boy while listening to Rufus Wainwright sing Hallelujah on my iPod (on shuffle) through my car radio as we made out down the street from his house… that’s kinda similar, right? 😂
This will sound strange but I never considered Rufus Wainright a musician that would have been known in America. He always felt like a Canadian/British scene kind of guy. I know his dad did good down south but his mom was a particularly Canadian kind of musician.
Well, we had EZ T.V.s w/ on/off switches and volume control. If the picture got fuzzy, we moved a dial & adjusted the rabbit ears. 'Leave it to Beaver' families had mothers that stayed home smiling & singing while cooking, cleaning & taking good care of the kids. Father's were pampered after 12 hrs
Remember coming home super late at night from professionally shooting a wedding on VHS-C tape with your dad, turning on the 20-something-inch TV and randomly discovering The Maxx on MTV’s Oddities? I do.
Remember being 8 and watching the “You Can’t Do That On Television” episode where they ask you to vote on what skit to watch next by touching a square on your 13-inch tv, and thinking they actually counted your vote? I do.
Remember watching Friday Night Videos (because MTV required cable, which was only available to ‘townies’ at the time) and waiting with [Pause-Record] on the corded remote of the VCR, for the commercial break to end, hoping it would be a music video you didn’t already have? I do.
And why go to all of that trouble? Because being able to watch music videos outside of the hours after the Friday 10:00 Nightly News was my right as an American.
I remember Sat afternoons, moving a 4 inch B/W portable TV to the top bunk because that was the only place I could pull in Dr Who from a UHF PBS station in another state.
Remember laying close with a friend while bathed in the light of Insomnia Music video? You’ll kiss once while “The Space Between” plays in the background. You’ll fall asleep together and never mention it again. It will remain one of the most beautiful moments in your life.
Simon and Garfunkel on a worn cassette, being oozed out from a Sound Design stereo, known, not for its fidelity, but for its ability to take multiple beers spilled on it.
I feel like I've talked a lot in the past few days about the weird wilderness era between when MTV stopped showing music videos and the advent of streaming video platforms like YouTube, but my discovery of Rufus Wainwright lands squarely in the middle of that no man's land.

I was over MTV by the second season of Real World
Not in a bad way.
Cigarettes and chocolate milk ❤️
Rufus Wainwright is one of a handful of artists that hearing just transports me back to a specific moment in time.
Have a pic with him around here somewhere.. from longgg (3 decades) time ago.
Two incredible voices and interpretations of the song. Just… angelic.
Unironically listen to a lot of Meet the Robinsons soundtrack. They picked a lot of good ones.
(Still 12 inches).
Rufus Wainright rings a bell, tho

There were like 8 people in the audience. I didn't fall in love with a boy OR a girl that night.
So no, no I don't remember that. Only the rich kids had cable.🤣
I DO remember sneaking off with her when I was in on furlough though!
Good pedigree though. The guy thinks if he smiles his pout will break.
