Introducing the Bluesky Altometer:
https://altometer.atdev.pro
This is an project #atproto that tracks image posts for alt text. It keeps track of the percentage of posts it has seen (since the last database reset) that are *missing* alt text.
The goal here is to increase the #accessibility of Bluesky.

Hope I don't cause problems 😬
I've got a few image posts myself I wish I could do this for
Thanks to SnowSquire on Github for the PR! 🙏

I know many people have a limitation of some kind, but I highly doubt two thirds of the population can't write alt text
We do need a better filtering system aside from blocklists though, as those are 1). A pain to manage & 2). Exclude folks who are able to use alt sometimes but not all the time.
But now I have the option that forces me to do it enabled
I first read this as “87% have alt”. But really it’s more like a warning gauge than goal tracker right now?
People can do more without generative artificial snake oil.
Most people either don't know, don't care, or actively use single periods or "image" or "commission" as alt text.
Doesn't detract from the fact that this is very cool.
The good of this method is that anyone can do it for you.
The bad is that it doesn't "actually" fix the original image)
Don’t know how feasible that is tho since I’m not a programmer.
assuming 13 million users, storing a table with the hex of their DID + 2 int counters of 4 bytes, we are looking at ~350mb
Solving bot labelling at the scale of the firehose is an entirely different class of problem. PR's welcome!
The original alt text on this is "a close up of a man 's face with a bald head ."
How is anyone supposed to glean from that that it's Samuel L. Jackson yelling "Everybody Strap In!"?
If so, a new GIF partnership should be sought.
I include the alt text from the original below. The AI mistakes the window pane for a sign and doesn't mention it's someone looking into a place in peeping Tom fashion.
