My friend has run an online game for a very long time, and there are people who’ve been with him a long time. I’m always curious about it but I’ve never really joined more than as an occasional spectator
Right: imagine a perfectly serviceable game map the size of Skyrim at like PS2 graphics, taking up about as much disk space as the hi-def rendered eyebrows of today's triple-A main characters.
I last played ADOM seriously about a decade ago, and it was huge then. It's... Gotten bigger. Same with Dwarf Fortress :-D I've got Qud on my wishlist... But I view ADOM as the daddy of the big story-driven rogue-like.
I'm primarily a strategy gamer. The focus on graphics, while fun, has stripped a lot of good out of gaming to me.
I wish developers were focusing on making gameplay more dynamic and interesting by building on what came before.
Metroid Dread was my favorite surprise from recent years, as example.
u want them... to exist? O r u planning on buying and playing them? if its long, when will u have time to play any other? If ppl start making them right now, thell be rdy 20 years from now. Im sure steam is full of small timesink games, but u just didnt buy them to try them out.
Ya. Gameplay advancement has suffered and stalled because of developers always trying to create overly expensive (and taking extended time to produce) "better graphics" but then ignoring advancement of actual cutting edge and innovative gameplay. 👍
I would love a long game that's expanding constantly so it's like we're all participating in a story together.
MMOs sort of promise this, but move too slowly.
Also Gedonia. An astonishingly ambitious project by one dude. And it’s GOOD.
Project: Gorgon. An actual mmo with real players. Unbelievably addictive. No hidden fees or cash shop. I can’t do it justice. You can permanently become a deer.
C:DDA has been in active development for the past 14 years and will likely in active development for the next 14. It definitely scratches an inch many people with niche gaming preferences have.
i was just about to say, the simplicity of the graphics but the complexity of everything on top of each other is just incredible and scratches this unbelievable itch. i’ve only played it like twice but i can’t wait for when it comes out completely when im 50. maybe 70
Stay tuned. We're in pre-production just finishing up the prototype design so it's still years away. But I've been working on it for 3 years already so I think 20 years is about right, unless I get over my tendency to throw up before pitch meetings and we get funded earlier. I need 12 people.
Buckle up, I'm a one man show and I still don't know how to code properly, and if i can harness my adhd I might be able to get this done in 5 or 6 years.
I'm hoping I can compress time and do it in a year.

I really miss those types of games!
Would love to see someone create the Dwarf Fortress of text adventures.

(I'm not a player but I'm very aware of the game for *reasons*)

Especially after they clarified it wasn't Minecraft.

How did your last fortress die?
“What?!?”
“When are we gonna get an audience in here? It's been 17 years.”
It's in development for 14 years and will be for another 30 years 😁
