for some reason my brain has decided it is irrationally angry the yearly calendar starts at some arbitrary point in the middle of winter and not the beginning of the growth season

Oh! Don't you like custom that comes from way back in the days when we were still in the Neolithic period and the tribes celebrated the shortest day & longest night to hasten on the return of the Sun & its attendant lengthening days.
That is when they cycle restarted. They counted the year from that darkest period of time till the next darkest period of time.
Mayhap this may help you understand
I asked Leo
The reason why the year starts in January is due to the Gregorian calendar, which is the most widely used civil calendar in the world. This calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to refine the Julian calendar, which had a small error in its calculation of the solar year.
Move Newyear to March 1st I say.
Then the numbered months will be in the right order.
I'm sick of the ones named
7, 8, 9, & 10 being months
9, 10, 11, & 12...
New Years Day used to be April 1st. April Fools Day was a way to make fun of the people still celebrating April 1st after the change to January 1st. I think April 1st made a lot more sense.
It’s a little more complex than that but that’s what learned in college. And I just checked Wikipedia and it listed it among possible origins of April Fools’ Day.
I often think about the alphabet, and how the order doesn't matter AT ALL. But if I taught my daughter the wrong order purposefully I might have a conversation with Child and Family services coming my way.
Truman Capote did not know the alphabet in order. He learned to read without ever learning the alphabet. He thought it was very weird that the alphabet was in a particular order.
And I would even make it rhyme the same so when she was singing with the rest of the class and she might go under the radar for a few years before the microscope came out. It would have been hilarious..... to only me.
We, animals, used to celebrate the equinox or solstice until some people of faith stole the celebrations surrounding them into meaningless "holidays" meant to change the subject from Nature itself.
The year ended with the end of winter solstice/yule/christmas/etc, the coldest and darkest time of the year.
The next block of time wasn't counted, and only started counting again when the snow started to melt and plants grew again. (That's why September, October -
November and December are not the 7th,8th, 9th, and 10th month)
When we needed more accurate calenders for sailing, and business, we added those two uncounted months in, and moved the beginning of the year, to coincide with the end of the previous
