I ned a new book. all my authors are writing too slowly.
it needs to be swash & buckle, either fantasy or sci-fi, with humor a bit of romance and a twinkle.
assume I've read nearly everything.
faves for this: McGuire, Brust, Andrews, Saintcrow, Kowal, Harrison, Briggs. GO!

I have written a book that leans into this vibe but it is not out quite yet.
I'll just assume you've read all of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe, but it's been my comfort re-read lately.
(I don't know if he's on this site yet. An amazing author And human being.)

Simple premise, special boy fantasy romp but the special boy is a 45 year old woman who is a recently divorced woman.
In the second book the moody elf prince goes to therapy and it is good for everyone.
only three writers have ever made me cry with just their words.
Ursula Le Guin
Seanan McGuire
and now Sebastien de Castell
Fantasy: Penric & Desdemona novellas by Bujold
10/10 banter and queer found family.
@lauraannegilman.bsky.social - The Devil's West series - magical alt-history, and several other flavors of reality-adjacent
- AJ Aalto (paranormal foolishness, heavy on the sass)
- enemies to lovers
- explosions
- knife fights

And seconding the recs for everything by T.Kingfisher and Lois McMaster Bujold, if you haven't read them already, and Davina Evans.
it's also about 16 books long so if you like it, it'll keep you going for a while
Then there's Georgette Heyer's early 18th C books: / These Old Shades / and / Devil's Cub /: So fun.
c @johnrogers.bsky.social
Jack the Giant Killer
Moonheart
Someplace to be Flying
Patricia McKillip:
The Riddle Master of Hed
Guy Gavriel Kay
The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy
not sure on kay but I think so.
The Gentlemen Bastard series by Scott Lynch starting with The Lies of Lock Lamora - but add con artists with hearts of gold and tragedy to the mix.
THERE! READ.
This... works, with complications.
It's anti-fascist fantasy in an original, non-Tolkienian world framed through the braided stories of three very different women.
I also recommend @mouseferatu.bsky.social's Widdershin's Adventures, starting with Thief's Covenant.
