My mom made this in the '60s because she had a friend with an egg allergy.

There are also cake recipes that use mayo instead of eggs and oil. Have tried; it works!

BTW, if you need meringue for something, aquafaba is a genuinely good substitute for egg whites in a lot of applications (I haven't used it in cakes that use whipped egg whites as the leavener to know how it behaves, but it works for meringue toppings, and for baked meringue.

I saw a question about the three holes thing in the crazy cake recipe, and it's primarily for if you're mixing the cake in the pan you're baking it in. It's easier to get the liquid ingredients mixed evenly if you spread them out a little in each hole, then dumping them in one spot.
