One cool thing tv shows do sometimes is kill off the only likable character to let you know that the show doesn’t mess around and also that you can just do something else now

I don't know if you can call Carl the most likeable character, but he was definitely the most Do Not Kill character... had to take a long hiatus from TWD after that one
I read GoT years before it was cool. When the show came out i started re-reading it and was like "wait, all the cool people die miserably, everyone left is a wretched asshole, and there are *way* too many sexualized children in this." And didn't touch it.
I don’t remember where I first saw this, but I love shows where that happens. I saw the phrase “spam in a cabin,” which pretty much means that anyone can die at any time.
I stopped watching Spooks at the end of Season 3, but apparently by the end of the series all but one of the original characters ended up dead or disgraced (mostly dead).
Me when they killed Barristan Selmy in GoT. Realised it wasn't going in a good direction when thry started the Dorne changes, but realised how badly they were going to fuck up when they killed him in a back alley
If you squint hard enough, the end of season 5 serves as a satisfactory-enough ending to the show that you don’t really need to go any further. The last two seasons are just excruciatingly bad.
Always thought if they were going to kill her off, and have Gemma do it, it should have happened offscreen. Not that Sutter ever did subtle, but the viewer knowing the culprit the all along but Jax taking 11 OF THE LAST 13 EPISODES to figure it out…at least we found out what became of Vic Mackey.
Loved the show for a few seasons then they just started to kill everyone just because. One of the guys' daughter got burned alive in some pit, ffs. Totally jumped the shark. I watched until the end but it jumped the shark, so to speak.
i stopped watching twd after glenn. Faked me out, hurt me, then tore him away again. Also, I've been really bothered by all the "well it was canon" people when the entire rest of the show is barely in line with the source material
Not necessarily the only likeable character, but Wentworth prison did that with their main character. But it’s such a great show. I like when shows aren’t afraid to finish the story arcs when necessary instead of keeping them in for “fans”
Wentworth did a pretty good job of changing it from the Bea Smith show to a proper ensemble piece before killing her off. Towards the end I did look up whether any original characters made it to the final episode
Yeh!! 🙌 It was supposed to be centred around Bea first, but then her arc finished and they decided to have ensemble instead of centring it around 1 character 😊😊 And yes boomer, will,Vera and miles were the only 4 that made all 100 episodes and joined ‘the 100 club’
Think that Ridley Scott did on Alien
I thought formula story that handsome Dallas is the hero so he will survive and that Ripley character is first to go.
How wrong was I 😂
When Boardwalk Empire killed Jimmy, I was like “alright. Well its getting late. Gotta get up this morning. Hey have a good time though, doing whatever. Yea. See ya!”
When Angela and her friend were murdered I knew that was coming. For me the Darmodys were the main reason to watch the show so it was kinda ruined for me too.
You read my mind! Boardwalk Empire killed off every halfway sympathetic character that was ever on it, except maybe his wife survived? It crossed the line into silly, for me, even though it was a very good show.
My old man bought the series box set on DVD and we've been watching it. Half way through season 5 now.
Both of us thought the first three seasons were great, but agree: since the start of season 4, it's just sort of dragged and doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
I can never forgive them for time-jumping over 1929. Why would a show about organized crime set in Atlantic City skip the year of the Atlantic City Conference? Also the Valentine's Day Massacre.
I got two issues in to the book and decided it was written by someone who a.) Hated themself b.) Hated humanity and c.) Actually didn't know much about how humans behave in disasters and just wanted to right misery porn.
Is this about the Genet? I wanted to watch the spinoff just cause I love Norman Reedus, but I just read an article an hour ago about how she was the closest they got to Governor or Negan again, as far as antagonists go, and now I don't know if it's even worth trying
That show did that to me twice. Once for a year and then again permanently. It's like they're teaching you to have no emotional connections to any characters through abuse
To be fair, it happens in the original source material too. Let’s be honest though, they changed so much stuff already that if they kept him alive the show would have been better for it.
Abraham offered himself as the sacrifice and I was fine with that. That F-Y look he gave Negan - chef's kiss. But Glenn? Completely gratuitous as well as repetitive (Glenn's demise seemed to be that season's theme.)
I stuck around after Glen. I knew it was coming, but still didn't enjoy it as much. Was barely hanging on, then they killed Carl. Never watched another episode
Fun story! I loved Glenn and had binged up to start of season 4 and took a break catching up. Next week they had the newest episode on in the break room and watched that happen. I didn't bother catching up lol
honestly though this is better than when they wait until the end and then pull some bullshit like the cyberpunk anime where they kill the main character instead of letting them have the happy ending they deserve/worked for
I remember dropping the manga for a similar thing with another character, then coming back for the final chapters after finding it there was a happy ending for a good number of the characters
Yeah, dunno if the anime's 'kill basically everyone' route and the poor reception it got scared the writer, but there's several scenes later on that are basically pulled from the anime where he goes 'but what if something good happened, instead'
Ah see I was like that with the books, my friend convinced me to carry on after the first book, they had killed off the only good character. But I got o love the bad characters, so it was worth it. The tv series ended terribly though
If we’re talking The Walking Dead I got to the part where they killed Glenn off, I finished the rest of the season just out of principle, and then I peaced out. Never looked back.
Learning within a few episodes that no one is safe (not even an A-lister) is what makes the best TV. So many things are possible if you know the hero can just die.
RIP Cat Stark we still miss you boo
Mayor of Kingston killing off Kyle Chandler’s character in episode one was extremely disappointing, but the show has Jeremy Renner who is definitely worth watching!
Without spoiling the show that prompted this skeet, let me just say the origin story from the previous episode made me so mad. Then the ending of the finale had me blood red.
Great job by the showrunner to reinforce over the 8 episodes “Hey this guy is an asshole”
Not them making us think they killed off Bellamy then disappearing him for multiple episodes only to bring him back as a backstabbing cult member and kill him off for real. At least they waited until the end of the final season to do that.
That and how they kill them off. Suppose it involves said character making an incredibly bone-headed, IQ-deficient decision that leads to their expiration. In that case, you're insulting your audience (i.e., me) and losing me for the foreseeable future.
My first/last thought went to the last episode (?) of the PROFESSOR T (Brit version) show. Otherwise super-smart capable character suddenly sheds IQ points, gains an unreasonable sense of confidence, and promptly steps in front of a fleeing car. It does not go well for the character.
Similarly, characters fighting and/or dying because an egg timer went off and not any story reason. Usually it means someone will pick up the idiot ball
Even if the actor playing the character wants to leave and it can't be recast, just give them a sendoff (e.g., move to another city, new job, etc.) rather than killing them off outright. Wankers.
This happened to me with one of the Danganronpa games. "Oh, shit! That was really unexpected, and yet made a lot of sense!...Well, anyway, I hate the rest of those losers so I guess I'm done."
I have rewatched the series multiple times but will never watch that death scene again. Don't like to see Omar's killing, either. Bodie's death really got to me, though. Perfect show, though.
The X Files did that. There were 2 characters I loved apart from the stars, they were Max Fenig and Special Agent Sean Pendrell, who had the hots for Dana Scully. Then there was Deep Throat and his replacement, X, but I never cared for them. Yeah, I'm an X Files geek.
Of all the things to hand-wring about TWD (and there were so, so many of them) I never found Glenn’s death to be one of them. It was canon, actually moved the story- unlike most of the circular storytelling on TWD- and it was absolutely ruthless. My two cents.
Yeah I feel people are just more nostalgic for Glenn/love Steven Yeun. What really killed TWD's momentum (at least for me) was every episode for the next 2 1/2 - 3 seasons revolving around the exact same plot
Yeah it was canon but they had changed so much at that point from the comics I don't think it mattered. The double fake out was what annoyed me. Lazy emotional blackmail. Normally I enjoy a good main character death but after that season every desire to finish the show was gone.
Having not read the comic beforehand, Glenn's death made sense to me. He was an idealist, a moral high ground good guy in a world where you have to be ruthless to survive. His story arc was finished. There was nowhere for his character to go.
I always thought that killing Daryl would have been better as Negan would have taken out the "brawn" of the group while underestimating the rest of them.
Daryl was everyone's favorite though. Like TWD was my mom's favorite show and he was her favorite character, I think if they killed him people would stop watching
Succession was not the same after Logan was killed off but we kept watching it because we were sure it was a scam and he was going to walk in any moment 😄
I thought it was well done and was not too surprised. Perhaps I'm more cynical or inclined to darker material than my SO. I even tried to foreshadow it FOR him, but he was still surprised.
Yeah. When Disney got me to watch a Star War show because Carrie Moss was in it, THEN killed her off in the first scene, I turned the channel and never went back.
I stopped watching The Walking Dead because they went overboard on character deaths, and I just stopped caring about any of them, assuming they would all die anyway.
Not exactly the same, but the House of Cards season 2 premiere let me know it was time to check out, once Kevin Houseacards shoved Mara Rooney in front of a moving train.
He was dead in The Big Bang Theory. That was always his ending. I know more than I ever want to know about both shows, despite never having watched an episode of Young Sheldon and only a few of TBBT.

When Tyrese was killed off of The Walking Dead I quit the show, have nit watched a single episode since.
Piss me off and I am gone.
I thought formula story that handsome Dallas is the hero so he will survive and that Ripley character is first to go.

Season 4 is maybe slightly weaker, but then it brings it all home in season 5. If you have the time, I highly recommend revisiting.
(Not sure why I stuck it out THAT long. Inertia, I guess)
I stopped being a fan on that night.
Grief porn is a good description.
Whichever one has them running through a department store to get up to the roof.
It was obvious this was going to be a zombie movie dragged out over a whole season. And then more seasons.
I had no inclination to watch the next episode.
It's grief porn.😬
Like ten different times.
(well everyone died eventually but it wasn't sad or surprising then anymore)
Once they killed off Professor Arturo, it rapidly went downhill
RIP Cat Stark we still miss you boo
Great job by the showrunner to reinforce over the 8 episodes “Hey this guy is an asshole”
and then wonder why the fanbase evaporated

(Althought SNW and Lower Decks are neck and neck)
Even with films and games. For me, Last of Us Part 2 came into mind straight away when you posted this
I am still much more interested in Matt Reeves’s Gotham than the James Gunn DCU
