Johnson could not pass meaningful legislation with a 5 vote majority. He needed Dem votes to do so. The House Rep caucus has been ungovernable since John Boehner was speaker.
This is the kind of thing Dems need to do. No shame in bending the system to your will. Not any more. The time for institutionalism and respecting norms is done. You want respect for norms? Build a system with norms that are worthy of respect.
Every state has different laws and most states leave it up to the Gov. DeSantis will have one at the earliest date possible for the one MOC from FL joining the administration.
I wish it would be so, but the democrats in the last decade have lacked strategy, purpose and a direction forward. Jeffries has not demonstrated any aptitude or penchant for leadership or strategy I how I am wrong.
With the Florida special election scheduled for April 1 (not joking), this gives the Democrats at least 3 months in which they could exercise their authority to check the executive branch.
The special elections for the two Florida seats are scheduled for April 1 (yes. April Fool's Day. How fitting!) Gov Hochul hasn't yet set the date for the special for Stefanik's seat.
I know, sigh. I'm a NYer, and willing to help. It is a special election, people may not turn out. I feel like there could be the slimmest of chances. And I mean really slim.
My son went to Clarkson, and it was always so gutting to drive through the North Country and see the signs for politicians who did not have the best interests of those people at heart. And guess who they voted for? Stefanik and Trump.
It's such a beautiful area up there.
I'm going to keep my eyes open to see if there are any opportunities to volunteer. It's a bit of a drive for me from hudson valley, but I'm trying to be optimistic.
We have to take control of the House of Representatives if we do that we're going to have four years of b******* but minimal damage to none God please!!! Then it's just going to only depend on what happens on the outside world. Continue
And this would actually be one of those happy times I can say I told you so. And if I've ever been right on anything please let it be this. Although I know I'm right on more than just this on a lot of things. But not right on all of them obviously but neither is anybody else
Unfortunately, it's more likely that we will find a few Dems who cross over to the dark side now and then. Golden, for one. Some of the progressive caucus when they want to make some stupid point. Etc.
Republican congressmen in purple districts and Democrats are going to hold the balance of power. The best news I’ve heard since the election. Between this and a 60 vote threshold in the Senate, a large part of Trumps legislative agenda is DOA.
Thank God!
I love my state so much right now. Orange & San Diego Counties each only have one GOP House member (Kim in Orange, Issa in SD). LA County is almost completely solid blue except for a tiny NE corner of the 23rd district (Obernolte). (1/2)
As a kid who grew up a few blocks away from our corrupt Congressman, Randy "Duke" Cunningham, that's mind blowing. Gives me a lot of hope, being the center of the resistance! God bless the great state of California. Kamala for Governor !!! (2/2)
pro’lly not a lot of governing getting done (a great thing with the nutjobs in charge), but frustrating #MagatMike should be @housedemocrats.bsky.social #1 priority!
🤣🤣😵💫😵💫 oh no! Not another 2 years of absolutely nothing getting done?!?This may save us - probably not. Here’s to hoping for the best and preparing for the worst 🌪️🌪️☀️
Needing northern Rs votes the SALT deduction will be back. That’s good for state and local governments in the northeast that will want to raise revenue to make up for DC’s asininity.
I simply don't see how the GOP will be able to accomplish anything with just 220 congresspeople. And I don't buy the idea that just because it will be 2025 instead of 2017, Trump will be able to magically cajole them into a phalanx for every vote with fewer votes than Pelosi ever had.
We have until December 5 to cure ballots & count provisionals. People are literally going door to door to get voters to go fix ballots. We also have 29 million voters with ballots that have 69 things on them. We can register to vote AND vote on Election Day. We want every vote to count
Also ballot "curing" takes awhile. It is still going on. 33 states require that small errors on ballets be "cured" by contacting the individual and getting the ballot corrected.
Mail in votes. Both districts have a lot of retirees and military who vote by mail. We did a market assessment for a hotel project in CA45 area and saw the numbers (huge number of retirees who are snowbirds and active military stationed abroad) as if 2019. Really wild swings on income levels.
Looks like the 119th Congress is on track to beat these 4 gentlemen's record.
(The 118th actually finished with 82 laws passed...still a dismal record)
You know how they say dems are the 'big gov' party and Reps are the 'little gov' party?
If you do a little reading you'll probably find that before the 'proclamation of emancipation' republicans were the "big gov"
party and dems were the "little gov" party. Reps and dems switched party names.
Republicans can't govern anyway. They have proved that with every majority they have ever had. But this means that Elon won't be able to really get his new department up and running without tons of questions from Congress. The answers to which may effect the stocks of his private companies.
If Trump has appointed 3 GOP reps in what passes for a cabinet, we may have to get busy working special elections. Their replacements should have to work for it to get those seats. Am I correct in this thinking?
It's counting the people pulled out for positions. 217-215 makes for a total of 432, three short of the actual total. Those three are probably Gaetz, Stefanik and Waltz. (Sadly, all three are in safe red districts.)
Since it’ll take months for the special election by then Dems will have some winning points to campaign on. Then again, Reps won’t risk the majority so no one should have high hopes on these 3 districts
So the hope is nothing gets down the next two years and we retake Congress in 2026, if there is an election. We may actually survive through this…May being the word.
Incredibly savvy, sanctimonious twerp Speaker Mike Johnson will rule with the slimmest of majorities just as adroitly as he ruled with an even less slight margin, which is to say he won't.
They won’t get a damn thing done. MTG w be trolling Boebert & every Black female Rep in the House. Mace w continue to prove she was THE meanest of Mean Girls all through school. Jim Jordan w continue being the biggest a-hole in Congress since Newt.
THIS is why the feds need to be conducting a forensic investigation into the POTUS slot particularly in the battleground states, blue down tickets yet red POTUS?? INVESTIGATE! DO SOMETHING jfc
Hence the reason DJT is trying to take away the purse from Congress as he won't get help from that group to commence his major grifting of the US Treasury.
You keep thinking salvation will come from the democrats. It will not. Our only hope is the republicans who hate Trump. They are backstabbing, eat their own, knife fighters. Democrats can barely pull-off a slap fight.
Stefanik is going. Was nominated for UN ambassador. I forget why, but Waltz is resigning too.
Three special elections because of that and Gaetz gone. So once both are gone, that takes it down to 217. So it's possible that the Dems retake the house... That's if we can persuade those districts.
Getting more nervous about the fact his lead is narrowing not getting bigger. I 1st saw 600+ then more recent 500+ now down to 100+ votes. I don't know how many R left to count but if it keeps going he might just lose🤦♂️😔
Let's go Dems, Let's go. help cure ballots if you are emotionally able. msg or call your senators & reps & Whitehouse to get them to vote against harmful bills & for helpful ones. demand the ERA gets published now before end of Biden's presidency to try to stave off some of the ish that is to come!
I stand by my belief that Harris could have closed the gap given more time, but nonetheless helped hold up Congressional and state races so that it will be almost the thinnest trifecta imaginable. And they won't be able to hold it in 2026, this is my flame of hope. Corruption investigations in 2027.
So how much does it cost to get one more Republican to retire? I'm sure if say a million of us pitched in a dollar, we might be able to get 3 or 4 even?
There will be special elections to replace House members who were appointed to the Cabinet from Hell. It doesn't seem likely, but maybe Dems can pick up seats there.
Now, if we could only get Biden to use the power SCOTUS gave him and make all the insurectionists ineligible to serve in government, maybe we'd have a chance.
If only more Republican legislators understood that Trump is now a Lame Duck and the stranglehold he has on them is waning. They should be able to find their backbones in short order
Yes....that's what is projected!!! Dems lead in 2 right now...if they hold it's going to be 220-215.....minus 3 appointments...217-215....then 3 special elections.....Correct me if wrong.....
Johnson is going to need a lot of support from Jeffries and the Democrats to get anything meaningful done. This is absolute "Gold," people. It also gives me a lot of hope for 2026.
Thin as that majority is, sometimes I'm not sure if there is a way to convince Republicans they've made an error other than a clear demonstration and letting them have their way for a bit. So long as we don't devolve into actual fascism, living in a country run by a demagogue will leave a poor taste
That’s the only way I see out of this mess. Hard to point fingers if they have all of the power. Hopefully, elections are still a thing by 2028. Truly the fuck around and find out of times.
Watch legislation proposed that restricts mail-in ballots so CA, who sends mail-in ballots to every registered voter, will count ballots faster (and have fewer voters due to inconvenience).
Special election to replace gaetz has been announced! The primary election will be Jan 28, 2025. The general election will be April 1, 2025. @gayforcongress.bsky.social is all in!
Fortunately, Gay isn't afraid of a challenge. She's committed to making a difference. I've been volunteering with her and her team for almost 6 months now. She's ready.
Between this and the senate hopefully wanting to have a future post-MAGA, because make no mistake this will come crashing down. At least some hope of damage control until we can stop the bleed in the 🌊 coming in 2026.
Can someone provide a link to, or give a short overview of the structure of the U.S. government...e..g u have president, house and senate? what do those 3 things do in conjunction to pass bills?
If so, I wonder if some of the Republicans from districts that were complicated might switch sides and give the majority to the Democrats. It's either that or allow Trump to run roughshod over the entire world.
I’m so thrilled that Tran won his House seat in my CA district 45 against Michelle Steele! Will be so glad to be rid of her. She is MAGA through and through.
It will be that and also
Incredibly dysfunctional which I hope means that the pres elect’s agenda of destroying the economy and deporting millions and imposing crippling tariffs gets stalled.
Can we maybe cut the "Dems got destroyed" in the last election (not from you @mollyjongfast.bsky.social I know). Senate map was terrible, and given global trends, inflation, right wing news, it's not socking Trump won. And yes, D's lost the house, but boy it's razor thin...
Comments
(Just kidding)
Is there a version of a Murkowski/ Romney in this GOP house?
The Stefanik seat could stay open for 2 years.......
Gonna need a LOT of popcorn for this
The Democrats can dictate the terms of EVERY bill of substance 🗳
I'm going to keep my eyes open to see if there are any opportunities to volunteer. It's a bit of a drive for me from hudson valley, but I'm trying to be optimistic.
Might find some Repugs who won’t go to the darkest places & may cross over from time to time
Thank God!
But we'll see
MIGHT JUST SAVE OUR ASSES.
(The 118th actually finished with 82 laws passed...still a dismal record)

It’s possible , but they are so nutty who knows.
But I'd be lying.
They'll f it up.
